Google Maps Debuts New Apple Watch App and CarPlay Features

The update that dropped today was just for the expanded CarPlay split screen view.
The Apple Watch Google Maps update is still a few weeks away.
I've noticed a nice little 'side effect' of Google Maps on CarPlay, before while Apple Maps was running on either the full screen or dashboard, any music playing would occasionally stutter. I thought it was an iOS or CarPlay bug, but I've just done an hour long drive using Google Maps (both fully open and on the dashboard) and there wasn't a single stutter. Perhaps just a coincidence and I'll have to monitor it, but maybe the bug was with Apple Maps after all, a side effect of turning off voice navigation maybe?
Also I'm pleased to report that if you just have Google Maps open and close Apple Maps on your phone, when you start the car the dashboard defaults straight to Google Maps, not Apple Maps, even if you have no route set. I was expecting the dashboard map to default to Apple Maps unless you set a route in Google Maps.

Finally! I saw this by accident today in the split screen view. Long overdue!
Apple Maps is truly shocking in my part of the word as is about as useful as somebody shouting directions from the top of a mountain 100's of miles away. It frequently takes me down dead-ends, tries to get me to drive down dirt-tracks and several times has requested a U-turn in the middle of the highway.
Many people from the US say how wonderful it is, but it's clearly designed for the US market and that's about it.
I for one welcome the new Google Maps view! Awesome stuff! (Also looks great on my widescreen display!)

I agree over here in Australia Apple Maps had hairdresser business located in the middle of a bridge and that just one of the issues I had to fix ( report ). They rely on Yelp which doesn’t have all the businesses. Google is the way to go.
I think it uses the last map/navigation app that was used. Kind of like what it shows in the "dock" as far as the last one that was used.
It took a day for me for Google maps to show up in dashboard.
However the voice navigation seems to cut out and stop audio from playing in Google Maps but I am using IOS14 beta so that could be why.
Google maps is much better - smoother, less clutter and more accurate.

Agree. Is there even a setting to have it not use the watch if the phone is on Carplay?
