I'm glad the Watch app is returning. Used it for biking when Google had the Watch app years ago. Thanks Google. Carplay I switch every so often, but think Apple maps is feeling better lately.

Google seems to say that the CarPlay dashboard part of it should already be available, but it doesn't appear to be working currently. Not sure if there's an update that is needed that has been held up (give that the announcement went out), or if there's something else that's in play.

Same here, don’t see it yet.

It appears the update is not quite out yet. Google have put an update at the bottom of their article saying “Update: Google Maps on CarPlay Dashboard starts rolling out this week with the next iOS update.”

Google Maps in the App Store is still showing version 5.49 for me. No dashboard support just yet.

Waze! Where are you?

Google bought them. Its likely Waze will be phased out and any tech that google like will be moved into google maps.

I really wish Waze would update the application and make it look better.. it seems really outdated..

I doubt its going to happen since google own them.. It seems google is taking the parts of waze that it likes and slowly letting waze rot on the vine

I only can see 5.49 in the App Store which is the July update. Can anyone confirm the new version number?

I love the vibrating on the watch when using Apple maps, main reason why I used it so far. Allows me to keep the navigation silent and quickly glance at it when I need it. The very simple graphic of which lane I should be in or where to turn is less distracting than listening to it for some reason.
Actually I wish there was a way to disable street names, it's especially annoying on highway exists where it reads the whole street sign for you. A quick "turn right" or "use exit 67" is enough.

Google Maps pedestrian navigation is so awful i've been developing my own nav app since last winter, and it already works much better than anything else on the App Store for my specific usecases. And it's not even halfway done, i've been spending maybe 10 hours of a month or so developing it

Good news, but as others have said it seems the update with the functionality has not been released yet, so might be worth updating the article.

Im all for Google maps over here in Western Australia. Im always forever reporting missing places on Apple Maps ( Its not even my job ). If Apple maps used Google for businesses not Yelp Apple Maps will be the winner. Till then Viva Google Maps.

I prefer to stay with Apple's propriety software as I trust them to guard my privacy and I know iMessage is encrypted. I use little as possible of Google's software on my Nokias. I wish Apple Maps was on my Nokia smart phones, I use OSM mapping software on them and Apple Music works well on Android. I frequently have my VPN switched on when it doesn't interfere with Apps to guard from Google and my Government monitoring my metadata too. Firefox and Microsoft Outlook is safer to use over Chrome and Gmail on Android phones. Nokia / HMD Global make some superb hardware for a reasonable price, I just wished that Symbian Anna OS and Nokia Store? evolved to iOS' and App Store's calibre.

I was under the impression that Google Maps includes crowdsourced data from Waze and even allows for more of that data to come from Google Maps as well: https://techcrunch.com/2019/10/17/g...-features-including-driving-incident-reports/

I should have worded it better, my issue is that you can't report stuff unless you are in navigation mode, although I will say that even in navigation mode many times I still can't report stuff because I don't get the little icon to report it for some reason. I use Waze every day pretty much any time I am driving only for the crowdsourcing.

Waze also has much more information and more detailed information in regard to traffic where I can pinpoint where and when the traffic is and re route around it. I have 3 routes from work to home and it's a crapshoot which one is clear and which one is massively backed up and I really need that pinpoint information and need it accessible easily in order to make a decision.

On the other side of the coin Google seems more accurate overall, and also has lane assistance which is huge in Northern NJ and NYC area. But I honestly don't use Google maps that much so I may be missing features if they added them in the last year or so, I will have to give it a try again and see how it has improved, maybe it has what I need now.
