Again, this is just rumour and speculation.

None of this was confirmed in any way by Google or Apple.

There have been all sorts of suggestions about Google's demands - ranging from demanding illegal activity to wanting the word "Google" to appear in the name.

Apple stated publicly Google would not allow turn-by-turn when explaining why they dropped Google Maps in iOS 6.

Google just stated publicly their goal is ad revenue in mobile OSes.

Both these public statements align with the speculation. You will never see a transcript of the meetings, but both companies' public actions and statements speak for themselves.

been playing around with it. amazing. love the app. thank you google.

Move aside Apple, Google is back

i understand what you are saying, and agree that neither offer perfect directions for every situation, but I do think that Google provides better directions more often.

Well, we will have to agree to disagree on that one. Fact is, until Apple forced the issue, Google wasn't offering ****** in the way of directions to iOS users unless Apple let Google own the farm.

And Apple Maps has worked nearly flawlessly for me since day one. Just so there is no confusion, I am not, repeat not saying that Apple Maps is giving everyone the same experience as me. I know that some have had issues. But my experience has been very, very good with Apple Maps.

Yet my first turn-by-turn experience with Google Maps was a fail. And that's right in their back yard. Hmmmm....

Edit: To be clear, this is a nice app. I'm impressed with it. But one is left to question why Google wouldn't give it to iOS users before Apple forced the issue. I know the answer I believe to be true.

It's nice, but Apple Maps has been working perfectly for me. So I'll probably keep it around but stick to the default.

Google Maps looks fantastic. In fact, all of Google's recent offerings look great. Maps, Gmail, Google+, Search....their development team is on a roll. Google Voice is the only app that still retains that old Google look.

Ironic isn't it? Google had all his great stuff, but refused to move beyond a rudimentary interface to it. So it didn't feel as powerful.

They hire Matias Duarte et al and suddenly it all gets rationalized, consistent and (shudder) designed and it shines like a thousand suns.

It's really complicated to make things seem simple.

Obviously they had to make it different from Apple's Maps interface, but their interface is pretty ugly, and it lags :(
Way better than the web interface, though. I'm definitely downloading and keeping this one.

I don't recall that. They've mentioned that this is the only way they could do some of those things, but that doesn't line up with the other rumours.

Google just stated publicly their goal is ad revenue in mobile OSes.

I don't see how that's relevant. If you're suggesting that Google wanted banner ads in Maps, I don't think that's a realistic claim.

Are there voice prompts along with the visual directions?

Yes. I just tested it without going anywhere. After entering a destination and pressing "Start" it started speaking the first part of the directions. It's a female voice which is either the same or very close to the Google Search app voice.

Well, 5 minutes of playing isn't much, but I'm pretty sure this will be my 'backup map app.'

If I can't find something in Apple's maps I'll be glad I have this, but that's what it would take. I find Apple's actual mapping program to be far superior and more pleasing to use.

So...I'm glad to have this, but Apple apparently didn't screw up too badly. They're still what I'll try first every time.

Cannot see it in Australian store yet

Click on the link in the news story. I could see it via search or anywhere else but clicking the link on my iPhone allowed to download it.

Just been playing around with it. Haven't use it in real world yet but from what I can see it is wayyyyyy better than apples built in app. If only stock apps could be deleted.

Same here, and Apple Maps has always worked for me thus far. Then again, I haven't used Maps that much, nor did I ever use it often.

Slow on iPhone 4

Slow and unresponsive when compared to iOS 5 Google maps or iOS 6 Apple maps. Looks like it could be using inline browser/html based solution?

Whatever; finally rural towns in Australia are on iOS again. Hopefully Apple have archived all the POI / other problems reported over the last few months - dare say there won't be as many coming in now.

Wow not impressed AT ALL!! Horrible attempt Google.

Slow and choppy (and they say it runs better on the iPhone 5 than on the Nexus 4). And could someone tell me if it's even possible to get directions FROM a place other than my current GPS location? Because I sure can't figure it out.

After using it for 30 min, went back to Apple Maps and it's like night and day. Thank god for Apple.

Clearly a winner.
