Can it be set as "Default" map ? so that apps and websites using address links open up in google maps instead of apple @%@% map ?

Downloaded and shared with everyone I know that had inadvertently updated their iPhone to iOS 6 or bought an iPhone 5.

Hallelujah! You really have to applaud Google, BAILING Apple out from its WORST customer and public relations DISASTER in recent memory.

Google could have let Apple HANG itself with its own mistakes, but rather showed enough RESPECT to iOS users to give them a CHOICE. Would Apple have done this for ANYONE, let alone Google? Of course not!

That alone shows which company is truly more pro-consumer rather than anti-competition.

Now if only Apple could take that SMALL step in doing what Android does, which is ALLOW its users to CHOOSE their OWN default apps, that would be a BRILLIANT gesture of good faith to all iOS users. Let's just hope Tim Cook follows Steve Jobs' advice and "does the right thing".

You do realize that Google is just as much, if not more, to blame as Apple for this whole fiasco, right? Google swooping in like the hero is ironic considering they refused turn-by-turn functionality when Apple asked for it.

It takes two to tango.

Today's lesson: this is what can happen when you depend on other companies for vital pieces of your experience. This is exactly why Steve Jobs was always so adamant about controlling every part of the experience.

No. iOS does not support the concept of "default" Apps.

Google has made it possible for App developers to make a link that opens in the Google Maps App, but that will require those other App developers to update their Apps.

Are there voice prompts along with the visual directions?

Yes

I love it! Google Maps, the end all, be all of mapping software was just downloaded on my iPhone. So, I asked it for directions to my office in the financial district of San Francisco from my home in Marin. It routed me over the Richmond bridge, then down through Berkley to the Oakland Bay Bridge. Not over the GG bridge, like any sane person would go.

So it appears that having an 8 year head start might not be all it takes...

Not sure why people are posting their locations unless it's some kind of pun for a maps release... I mean, it's not being released by zip code or state.

Played with it for 5 mins, and I have to say I am VERY satisfied with the quality of the app. Not only did it bring back the original goodness of the iOS 5 Google Maps, being vector-based makes loading and panning around the app very smooth despite using it on my 3GS.

Well done, Google. I've already add in a 5 star review for this app on the App store.:D

i understand what you are saying, and agree that neither offer perfect directions for every situation, but I do think that Google provides better directions more often.

Turn-by-turn and vectors? Looks like Apple and its users finally got what they wanted :)

Only after Apple dropped Google Maps and built their own turn-by-turn systems.

In case you didn't notice, Apple maps with Turn-by-turn was kind of a game changer.

What Google did before it came out and after have no bearing on each other.

Before Google held all the cards. Now they have no choice but to put turn-by-turn in if they want to compete. The rules of the game changed and you expect Google to not adjust their plans accordingly?

You both make good points. The same one but it's a good one. :)

Whatever happened behind closed doors doesn't matter now. Both options are available so it's a win for users. I really do like Apple Maps when it finds what I'm looking for. The directions haven't let me down yet. The POI, however, can be a PITA.
