Which GPS doesn't do that?

Every GPS I've ever used does the same thing. Take a turn that isn't on the list, and within a few seconds it recalculates a new route for you based on that side street. My 2004-vintage TomTom GPS does that perfectly.

Excuse me! Maps was the first turn by turn I've ever used. sheesh. Before Maps, all I had was the static Google maps directions on my iPhone and it was a PITA to use while driving. Actually dangerous.

I'd like someone to tell me whether it recalculates the turn by turn directions if you intentionally take a different street (e.g., to avoid the highway) or decide to make a side stop en route like Apple Maps does. THAT really impressed me about Maps.

That's standard on every turn by turn nav app

yeah...Either you've NEVER used a device with turn-by-turn directions before Apple Maps, or you're one of those people who will buy poo with an apple logo on it.

You mean the way TomTom re-routes you? And also, how quickly does to this ?

I know with TomTom you can be two streets away before it re-calculates. If i didn't care about my data on 3G I'd try it.

I don't recall that. They've mentioned that this is the only way they could do some of those things, but that doesn't line up with the other rumours.

The actual quote was "the only way we could get...". Again, they must walk a tightrope since they still partner with Google in other ways. But it's obvious the reason turn-by-turn wasn't there was not technical.

I don't see how that's relevant. If you're suggesting that Google wanted banner ads in Maps, I don't think that's a realistic claim.

Google's revenue model is ad based. The iOS Maps app didn't generate revenue over the map data usage. Look at what Google is moving to in Android with ads in the OS integrated services and its not a far stretch to bet they were wanting the same hooks in iOS.

Read the Google Maps terms and conditions. It will tell you what they are collecting and linking to your Google account. Your map searches in this app will drive the ad content in your Gmail window at home.

It's a pretty basic feature to be impressed by.

It's more impressive that something you carry with you virtually everywhere can use satellites that are 12,000 miles away from you to plot your location on a map...

I'm still I have the original Google Maps, waiting for the new jailbreak!

sidenote: pretty cool how Daly City is on the screenshot; I went to high school there  (cool story bro)

Hallelujah! You really have to applaud Google, BAILING Apple out from its WORST customer and public relations DISASTER in recent memory.

Google could have let Apple HANG itself with its own mistakes, but rather showed enough RESPECT to iOS users to give them a CHOICE. Would Apple have done this for ANYONE, let alone Google? Of course not!

That alone shows which company is truly more pro-consumer rather than anti-competition.

Now if only Apple could take that SMALL step in doing what Android does, which is ALLOW its users to CHOOSE their OWN default apps, that would be a BRILLIANT gesture of good faith to all iOS users. Let's just hope Tim Cook follows Steve Jobs' advice and "does the right thing".

Haha. Let's not get crazy now.

This is great of Google to provide us with this app, but be realistic here. Google isn't doing this out of the kindess of their heart, alone.

They love iOS users using their product and bringing in more revenue.

In the end, it's all about money buddy.

Or you're one of those people who buys expensive gadgets that do only one function when a gadget that does way more than one thing will suffice. Why would someone like myself who drives an average of 2000 miles per year and needs to use a map less than once per year spend money on a friggen gps?

Have you used re-routing feature on Apple maps?

It works extremely well and quick.

This is great news but sadly unless Apple ALLOWS it to be fully integrated into iOS, i.e. as the DEFAULT mapping app, then this Google Maps app is still FAR from reaching its potential benefits for users.

Basically now instead of clicking on a web link or being featured as the map on another app, you need to manually copy and paste the address from the webpage or app you're using and then go into Google Maps app and paste it there. If it was the DEFAULT app, all you would need to do is CLICK and it would come up AUTOMATICALLY in Google Maps.

C'mon Apple, give us what we WANT!

I think Google might want to tweak the app. See the attached image. The blue icon is where Google located me. The red icon is the actual address.

See the big blue circle? The phone is still trying to get an exact gps location. Wait a few seconds for an exact gps lock.

All is well again in Japan where public transportation is king.

One weird problem though.
When I click on Google Earth (and I do have it installed) it opens up the location correctly, but on another app that I have called MapsWithMe (btw, it's an excellent offline map app if anyone's interested).

Aside from that, welcome back Google Maps.

Not perfect either, shows me in a building (that was actually demolished 3 years ago) about half a kilometre from my actual location.

Still like Apple Maps better. It's more integrated within the OS (Siri, contacts, lock screen)

Never had a problem with Apple Maps and really don't think it is bad as most of you make it seem. Goodnight.

Wait... you mean Apple's map is better integrated into their OS?

haha, ignorant to the end.

Hopefully a jailbreak will come soon.

Is there a way to open the Google maps link to open in the new app as opposed to Safari? This is the most important use for me.
