Yes. I just tested it without going anywhere. After entering a destination and pressing "Start" it started speaking the first part of the directions. It's a female voice which is either the same or very close to the Google Search app voice.

That's awesome. Can you use it as a navigation system for driving, or is it meant for pedestrians primarily?

Level of detail severely lacking. Give us the old map back!

Me, except when I need Street View.
Integration with iOS main reason.

Same here, I'll keep Google Maps installed just for the transit integration with Apple Maps. Been using it since Beta, took it to Europe for 5 weeks and never had any problems. No reason to switch, google maps for me has just as many errors as Apples.

Just an fyi, this is an old android maps feature. Just makes me smile when people are impressed by old features on android.

This is an old feature on all GPS navigation units... so that "android feature" has actually been around since the dawn of GPS navigation...

Omg - fanboys never find a new low

Now I see folks commenting that apple maps is better than google because it "looks better"? Forget the fact you're now in the wrong place?

Holy cow people are nuts

Yeah, it has. Though that's bound to happen when you replace a mature platform with what was at the time a beta 1 release. People tend to get a little bitchy over stuff like that.

Though I have been playing with Apple Maps since I upgraded my iPad to iOS6 a few days ago. It's improved a goodly bit since I first played with it. I wouldn't put it up there with Google Maps just yet, but it's...yeah...it's decent now.

But notice Google lists it new Google Maps as beta. It typically does all it software that way. I've been with Google+ from the beginning and it was quite buggy for a long time.

Jesus, the ios6 version looks terrible.

Apple just created a mess.

I was going to ask if gmaps was the last major issue for iphone5 and ios6 but apple is still not out of the woods yet even with google maps.

They should've cloned Jobs while they still had a chance.

Of course they had to use the opposite two-finger gesture to put the map into pseudo-3D view mode; eerie how the rest of the interface mimics Apple Maps.

Of course you know that its the same gesture as used on the android version, which was implemented years ago.

You knew that right?

Why don't I feel comfortable adding my home and work info to my google account?

Because you're overly paranoid.

Seriously, are you afraid Google's gonna show up at your door and literally shove advertisements down your throat? Apple probably has your home address too, so does Amazon (probably). Are you afraid Apple's gonna sell you iPods against your will? Is Amazon gonna have you arrested for not buying a Kindle?

If you zoom in you get the same amount of data.
It's all because of the vector rendering approach Google decided to take and if enough people complain I'm sure Google will tweak the display threshold.

I can't easily tell who writes better software. I can't see any of the source... where did you find it?

Better UI design? That's a preference thing.

did you not notice the LAG? I know I did, big time, and did you NOT LAUGH when reviewers have said this app works better on the very iPhone 5 than in their own nexus 4?

this app is not bad or anything it's just meh, is this the way android feels like? choppy framerates and laggy? I don't want that crap I'm not into LAG

How to change to Kilometers from Miles?

Turn by turn on 3GS:)

Yes... how to change to Kilometers? Hong Kong uses KM.

Looked it up in Help, it says this:

Note: The default unit of distance
depends on your device settings.
To change between miles (mi) and
Kilometers (km), go to Settings>
General>International>Region
Format
.Select your proper region,
then return to Google Maps for IOS
app.

Obvious.

iOS 7 - return Google Maps as the default mapping system. Scott messed up, but that doesn't mean Apple can't fix his mistakes and take Google back.

Google maps > Apple maps, anyday.

why do you need that? google just released tools for devs so they can point their apps to google maps instead of apple's.

and NO Google maps > apple maps

Apple's made app with Google info in iOS 5 > google maps and apple maps

Are people seriously complaining about two free mapping services?

I like the design of the Google app, it's more modern. I also like the Apple app.

I ment to say it makes the iphone the best device.

How so? Android has Google Maps and includes plenty of features the iOS version doesn't. And Android includes plenty of other mapping/navigation apps. Releasing Google Maps for iOS doesn't make the iPhone the best phone. That doesn't even make any sense.

----------

Not perfect either, shows me in a building (that was actually demolished 3 years ago) about half a kilometre from my actual location.

Google Maps doesn't control how your iPhone is determining your location.

I want Siri to use Google Maps instead of Apple Maps. I'm sure every dev will switch to Google Maps, but unlike giving us the option to set Chrome as default mobile browser, Apple should go back to Google Maps.

I can't understand what you're saying in your second paragraph.

Will they? Wasn't one of the problems before this Apple Maps debacle about Google starting for their mapping data and integration into apps? I imagine Foursquare and others will stick with the built in API

Yeah, we seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place here. We have Apple's maps, which feels like a much more solid, better performing program, but the data is lacking. On the other hand, we have this new Google Maps, which is a little slow, laggy, and crash prone (it's kicked me out of it twice now), but gives you tons more information and features.

I guess no matter which way you go, you're screwed somehow. We either wait for Apple to catch up to Google on the maps, or Google to catch up to Apple on the programming.
