BTW, Apple didn't make a phone. They made a smart phone which is closer to a computer and iPod than a phone.

I agree! The phone part of my 3gs is the worst phone I've ever owned. I just dropped 4 more calls this morning while having full 5 bars. I'm on the fence about calling ATT and trying to get out of my contract so I can try some other phone/provider.

give it to me for verizon.

PLEASE VERIZON get some phones that don't suck. the DROID is really cool though.

BUT.It.is.notan iPhone.

I'm just looking for something to take the place of my 5 year old phone/lost ipod touch.

Way to go, Google!

... but only if the REAL Android will be updated onto my myTouch - the way Google Maps Nav was finally enabled.

To those who have connections dropped while using their iPhones: that's ATT, isn't it?

I also wonder how happy Google is with Verizon branding their phone "Droid". I think it's a great name (thanks to Lucasfilm) but I see it as undermining what Google was trying to project with the "Android" brand and serves to confuse people as to what an Android phone is.

If the rumor of a Google phone is true, my feeling is that it's a reaction to how Google perceives the carriers and manufacturers now after seeing how they have used Android so far. Perhaps its a reaction similar to Steve Jobs reaction to the Motorola ROKR.

By the way, brilliant post. Spot on.

The thing for me, that I find MOST fascinating, is that Google has not begun an internet campaign. They OWN the online ad world. I fully expect when the gPhone debuts, that Google marketing will launch into the biggest online ad campaign ever seen. They bought android.com and every time I visit, it just has info for the dev guys. You just know, that the website is going to become the homepage for their phone OS and be gear-ed toward consumers.

I thought Android was an open platform? If so, then the only way the current phones could not be the "real" Android would be if they didn't implement everything the whole Android platform is capable of doing.

Did I miss something?

I suppose that a "real" Google Android phone call will go like this:
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "Call Harry's Plumbing Supply."
Phone speaking back to owner: Are you sure you want Harry's Plumbing Supply? Ace Hardware has been price checked to be 2.6% lower cost than Harry's?
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "No, I'm not interested in Ace Hardware, connect me to Harry's Plumbing Supply."
Phone speaking back to owner: Well okay, but there is a Sears store closer to your current GPS location. They offer plumbing supplies and Craftsman tools also. Would you like to try there instead?
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "No, please dial Harry's Plumbing Supply. No more advertising."
Phone speaking back to owner: Okay, okay, however a quick scan of Harry's Plumbing Supply yellow page ad, shows that he are now closed. You really should consider calling Ace or Sears, they will give you excellent service and save you money. Which would you prefer?
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "Dial the mutherfuc*in' number I requested and stop with all the ads!!!"
Phone speaking back to owner: Okay, okay! Harry the cheapskate that won't spend a few bucks advertising on Google coming right up, but don't complain to me about his service or prices.
***phone rings***
Harry answering his phone: "Hello?"
Owner speaking to Harry: "Hi Harry the wife said to invite you and Margaret over for steaks on Saturday. Can you hear me Harry...? There's suddenly a lot of static right now. Can you hear me, Harry? Harry, are you there...?"

This did make me laugh! :D

"the city" ... haha! you east coasters are so silly. There ARE other cities, you know.

And in MY city, 3G works like a CHARM. :D

Well, I summer in the Hamptons, and my signal is sublime......

presumptuous, ain't it?

Especially when coming from a 'left-coaster.'

A Piece

Google is going about it all worng. The Driod is a piece of junk. It is unattractive, bulky, the keyboard is poorly designed, you can hear an echo on the earpiece when you talk, the search by voice unreliable, and the google maps is horrible.

It is a total eic fail. I had one and returned it within 2 weeks of use.

I prefer to wait for the iPhone in 2010 to be released on Verizon.

It is coming!!

Google needs to go back to the drawing board.

The objective point of view against the Motorola Droid is coming from someone who owns, or claims to own 3 iPhones. Seems both excessive and humorous to point out.

Compared to what are surely the objective points of view from the guy with the Android avatar? ;)

With Google's savvy for "beautiful" software design (snicker), I can't wait to see their hardware design. :)

If he had 3 androids on his avatar you'd have a great point! :D

1 android vs 3 iphones are different levels of passion! :)

Yes! But posting from an HTC Hero? Hmmmmm..... :)

As an owner of around 6 iPhones/HTC G1/MyTouch/Hero/Palm Pre, I have to say, all the above Android devices were filthy. Maybe with the exception of the G1. The software keyboard is just nasty.

I spent some quality time with a DROID at the store last week and the hardware keyboard is a joke. The flat keys with the slightest sliver of space between them give you absolutely no advantage whatsoever. No faster and no more accurate than the virtual keyboard. What a waste of space.

Nothing like catering to the "we hate virtual keyboards (even if we've never tried them" crowd and then falling on your face anyway.

The rest of the device seemed nice, though Android is still a convoluted design mess.

Did you try a fake demo version or the real thing?
I've wanted to try the real one for a long time, as the ones I've been trying have all been fake ones. I thought that Verizon stores were supposed to have real Droids…. but I guess not.
The fake Droids have a serious problem with their keyboards, I can't press them in at all. If that's what their real keyboards are actually like, they have a serious problem.

You do realize that Google had nothing to do with the physical design of the Motorola Driod right?

Google simply provided the OS... Motorola's implementation of that OS has it's faults, but overall it's not to terrible.
I don't care for the keyboard, but overall it's a decent phone.

And you just keep holding you breath on that Verizon iPhone. Try not to pass out on some unsuspecting stranger. ;)

I'm not gonna lie, I didn't read every article, but skimmed over all.
I found that they seem to be comparing Android to iPhone.

I'm not saying any phone is better than the iPhone. And I don't think Google's plan is to develop a phone that "kills" the iPhone. They just want to be a competitor. As more and more people buy smart phones, (17% of worldwide sales of phones were smart phones last year) they will most likely use the internet. And when you search, Google makes money.

So I never said the Android os is better than the iPhone, I just think having it available on multiple carriers, platforms, with a keyboard, or touch screen would give people more choices. Not everyone wants an iPhone (as popular as it is)

Both companies will do fine in the long run.

I concur.

Although I do like the screen, the phone feels clunky, chunky, bulky, lethargic, and seems unrefined, through and through.

The sales person was mighty surprised when I mentioned the 256MB storage restriction for apps.

This makes me look that much more forward to the debut of the "real Android."

It was the real thing.

I bet the real keyboard is little better than the fake ones you tried.

overall it's a decent phone.

That should be their new ad:

DROID by Verizon: It's a Decent Phone. Did We Mention Our Superior Wireless Coverage? ;)

In my hands-on with the thing I certainly didn't see what all the reviewers were crowing about. I think people are so desperate for an iPhone contender that they'll wax poetic about any challenger. Then it all just fades away (Palm Pre).

The keyboard sucks and adds unnecessary bulk (and sliding mechanism) to the phone, the industrial design is generic at best (the gold accents not helping much), and the UI of Android is horribly inconsistent right now. This is not the Droid consumers are looking for.

As long as the "real Android doesn't prove to be as elusive as the "real" killer that O. J. Simpson had been pursuing for years across countless golf courses.

Haha.

At this rate, it seems to be moving in a parallel direction. :p

Obviously I don't think Android or Google will fail, they will have "success". What I am talking about and the articles refer to is not iPhone, but the PLATFORMS, iPhone as a platform, and Android as an overall platform which is on many devices. But those differences of hardware and software and ecosystem all together versus the Microsoft way of only software like Android is the entire point. The articles go into a lot of depth about it all. You obviously didn't read them as you said. I am talking about LONG TERM. Look at Windows Mobile now, look at Symbian now. I'm telling you, Google is making some big mistakes, and the pathetic thing is that it is as if they didn't even do the due diligence to learn from these problems that have already happened. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and it looks like Google is doing exactly that!

I really recommend you read them all. It is very interesting and it will give you a better understanding of the technology industry and business in general!
