It looks thin because it's a render. The actual product will never be this thin. It's too thin to fit enough battery life in there, unless there is a pronounced bottom bulge.
Totally wrong. The GTR2 is as thin as these and easily gets 10 days battery life [they claim 14 days]] I charge when it is convenient so never really challenged their14 days, but definately goes 10 days+

Still don't understand why Google insist on round form-factor.

Apple watch has already proved that rectangular is more suitable. And it has been accepted by users as well.

This times 1,000. They tried round screens with T.V.'s back in the 1950's. It didn't work.

For the life of me I cannot figure out why Android Smartwatch manufactures are so obsessed with round screens yet copy everything else Apple does.

Edit: I do think it is a nice looking smartwatch. But you have to give up too screen area for the round design.

The strap is definitely the Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense Infinity Band. I can't believe they bought Fitbit just for the band. Here's hoping it will be running FitbitOS 5 and will last up to 7 days without charging.

I absolutely love the thinness of this design. Super impressive if they can get it that thin. It almost looks like a Skagen watch which I’m also a fan of. I’ve always been partial to round watches.

Why is everything that google makes so nerdy lol

That is literally the opposite of what I thought. 😄

This looks more watch-like than a computer on a wrist IMO.

The tech should be invisible, the design should just get out the way. I’ve got a square screen to view my health info, other things that need squarish views, and it’s called a MacBook.

I do like the AW but I’ve skipped 6 generations because of how it looks mainly.

There are nice square watches, but the Apple Watch isn’t one of them. You’re trading in looks for functionality and that’s fine, but just don’t lie to yourself the Apple Watch looks good Especially compared to watches in the $500+ range (sure more than the Apple Watch but they will last a lifetime instead of 2-5 years).
I haven’t worn a watch in 20 years. Your point is probably spot on but I have an Apple Watch because it’s not a watch. The aesthetics aren’t important to lots of people like me so the google watch aesthetics are also meaningless. Round? Square? I don’t care. If I cared I would start wearing a real watch that was nice and not a digital device.

Wow, this looks great! I really hope apple comes out with a round one too. I really prefer round even though I will lose some screen space because of it. I only really use it to see notifications and track my workouts.

Circles aren't good for displaying what is predominantly tabular or list data. There's a reason computer screens are rectangular.

True, but I don’t think it would be a common use case to view tabular data with such a small viewport.

List views, or anything with lots of high-density info, I agree.

Very true, IMO the round form factor is a waste of screen real estate. You can have so much more information on the screen on square/rectangle. I think round is just a more sentimental/old school thing predating modern tech.

The GTR2 has a black plastic bulge on the back that is more than a third of the thickness.

It's a valid comparison because Apple Watches are computers called a "watch". They include a monitor and smartphone. Yes, they are portable but so are laptops. How many round laptop screens are there? The Apple Watch is wearable but that doesn't mean is has to be circular. They have far more functions than just a watch. If they were only watches, round will work. If iPhones were only phones, they could be all sorts of shapes or sizes. They wouldn't even need a screen. Rectangular screens make sense as giving the most visible area for their dimensions.

Round watches are a legacy of analog clocks. In fact, no one really knows why clocks were designed and popularized as round. People put forth various reasons -- days are cyclical so we want circular timepieces, the round shape mirrors the shape of the sun, sundial shadows move in circles [best explanation] -- but we really don't know why clocks were popularized as round. Analog clocks do not have to be round but that's the convention. It's a design bias. Circles are pleasing objects to many people. They are interpreted as infinite (although they are not more infinite than a square -- you can trace the perimeter of a square forever if so inclined).

There's no reason for digital watches to be round. They can be but it's an inefficient use of space. Making them round is form over function. People complain about Apple deciding form over function but at the end of the day, Apple wants functional products. I like the look of round watches but it just isn't the best decision for smartwatches.

If Apple only released round Apple Watches, I'd buy one but that's because it has utility to me. However, the rectangular face is the more efficient design. If Apple made a round watch and a rectangle watch, I'd choose the rectangle one as more space-efficient. I don't use the clock faces that mimic analog watches. They look nice but I use the watch for its functions, not the look of it. If I want a "dumb" phone, I'll buy one. If I want a "dumb" watch, I can buy a round analog one or whatever form people make. Those are my biases but the mathematics of face shape shows that a rectangle gives more screen area than a circle does (21.5% more for a square versus a circle with side same length as diameter).
Why are you talking about round laptops?....as I have said it’s ridiculous to compare something you wear to something with a keyboard attached and a enormous screen compared to something you wear on your wrist which is truly portable, you try going cycling or swimming with a laptop, and watch people laugh at you. As I’ve said smart watches with a round bezel can look very smart even with a watch face designed for an Apple Watch design.

It is odd that some who like square watches have a need to reform those who like round watches.

Surprised?

People will argue about the most inane things, and sometimes just won't leave you alone. 'My' team is better than yours, 'my' beer is better than yours, 'my' whiskey is better than yours, 'my' dog breed is better than yours, on and on, into politics, religion, music, it's the same thing. And they want to convert you. *sigh*

Reform, conform, deform, perform...

Not a fan of Google in general, but that design is spectacular. Much, much better than the Apple Watch.

I don't mind the design (still it's a matter of personal preference) but I believe form should follow function. And smart watch makes more sense when it's rectangular.

Still the AW is not a fashion accessory for me, I only wear it to sleep and to work out, so if AW7 is round or even triangular it won't affect me much and I'd still buy it.

Or Casio's classic square digital design, if we talk affordable for everyone. I'm actually waiting for a strong Casio retro comeback.
I actually have a $50 Casio World Time sitting in the watch case next to my Omega Speedy 😎 And I love them both.

I love how thin it looks, but it definitely won’t have the same sensors as the Apple Watch does at that mm. Also, looks like this came from prosser again. Did he buy MacRumors or something?

I don't need to watch the g____ Peanuts on an Apple TV Watch app, the round design and certainly the watch faces shown look more natural and sleek. Thus far though the AW series 4-6 take the title in terms of sleek/discrete smartwatches, but a round design.... That'd complete it. My 40MM is just unbelievably compact for a device capable of what it is, but again I do wish it had a circular chassis.

As long as the Pixel Watch carries a HR sensor, ample storage + bluetooth aac playback to earbuds, well-designed watch faces (which IMO Apple's templates and typography all look meh), and is even modestly thin/sleek, I'm sold. Don't care for the 328232032 agenda planner apps compatible with the AW or whatever has people worked up.

The cope in this thread is really something. Probably most will buy the Round AW Series 7 on day 1 and recant the hate lmao

Eh idk, I mean, man the AW 40MM is actually fairly thin given the surface area and especially in relation to Android Wear attempts thus far, no?

I could see them fitting a decent bit in with a 42MM diameter, and maybe the renders are off a bit. We'll see.

This looks really cool and Wear OS could stand to have a flagship watch. But even with some amazing features, how many product cycles would this go through before getting canned? Two or three max, maybe? Google just doesn't commit to its hardware (or a lot of its software, for that matter).
