and dont forget if your netbook/laptop is stolen there's no data to be hacked out of it. one simple phone call or text to a "cloud" server and the stolen device no longer has access to the cloud.

additionally, since the device depends on the internet, then the next time it's turned on by a thief, he'll get no use of it unless it is on the internet, and the moment he does that, the device rats out the location of the thief.

Bingo. There are hosts and HOSTS of benefits to a computing model like this.

What a super annoying speaker in the video.
Shame.

I happen to like and use a lot of google-stuff every single day.
Looking forward to try the Chomium OS:

That's sure to develop commitment for the platform.

Zero apps exclusive to it. Many excluded from it. Pure genius really.

Are you actually arguing for vendor lock in?

Google doesn't care if you use their OS. They just want to get more people on the internet more often, so they get more people to see there ads.

That's an incredibly paranoid and rather ignorant view..

Let's be clear.. Google could care less about "spying" on you or "knowing what you're doing". They are basically in the business of selling context-sensitive web ads. They actually could care less about content itself, as long they can present ads against it.

LOL, have you been actually reading about what has been going on with Google and books as well?

In your comments you are trying to disassociate "spying" & "knowing what you're doing" from serving you ads. That is a ridiculous statement. Information is the most important commodity in this world along with natural resources. You can't possibly say you know 100% what Google is doing with all this info because they never let anyone know. You are essentially espousing what a Google spokesperson would say.

Now if you feel OK with one company gathering all this kind of info about you in exchange for free stuff then go have fun. The funny thing is you would be alarmed if it was the gov't (who can actually say that it is for the safety of the country) who had this power but not a corporation whose sole reason to exist is to make more cash under any circumstances.

please read my post again. you totally missed the part where i said INTRANET NOT INTERNET. there is NO dependance on google when dealing with an INTRANET.

if you clear up your confusion with that then consider the example market i describe then all your other points will be clearly addressed.

I'm quite well aware of what you wrote and your whole post did not just deal with the intranet but with average consumer as well. I cited that you may good points but also said that there were negatives that also needed to be addressed, from the consumer point of view.

Very Smart Idea

This Chrome OS might not be what I need since i like to do other stuff than just surf the web. BUT, ALL my mom, dad, and 2 sisters do on their computers is surfing the web. that is it.
they power up the computer and go on Facebook immediately and maybe send an email once in awhile..
This will catch on

High Speed Internet

So I need at least about 10MBit up/down internet to use this OS normally, say Editing and Store HiDef original Images and Videos.????

"on" and "screen up" are two completely different things.

Yes, he probably walks around with his laptop on 24/7. That doesn't mean the laptop is necessarily with the screen up.

Are you suggesting that Google Chrome is incapable of similarly sleeping but must instead be shut down when the laptop screen is down?

Does sleeping qualify as a killer feature for Mac OS X? (... that was meant as sarcasm, but now that I think about it, the last time I saw a Windows computer sleep it was very pokey about doing going to sleep or waking back up... might be like trying to compare apples to oranges though given how old the Windows laptop was.)

you don't get sarcasm very good do you?

even i'm smart enough to know he probably wasn't even referring to a laptop. first he didn't say he was. i was simply trying to point out that not everyone does things the way he does. just because he wouldn't get anything from this with what is certainly his desktop machine, doesn't mean it would not come in handy for someone constantly on the go in a mobile environment.

I don't know about you, but I do!

There. I fixed it for you. Updated for the Apple tablet hopeful. ;)

no, windows is often pokey and unreliable with waking up.

i imagine it'll kill off windows ce... and desktop versions of linux. it looks very complicated tho. numbed my brain just watching it work. not for me. i know many people who'd appreciate it tho.

You would not be editing high definition movies on Chrome OS. 95% of the internet/computer user population do not edit high definition anything -- or even edit at all -- on their computers either.

As a tech support rep seeing as how 95% of my customers only use Internet Explorer/Firefox on their computer and occasionally maybe Microsoft Word, I would say if Google provides a better document editing experience than the current Google Apps, they would have a computer that is easily suitable for a mass market.

It would never be a 100% replacement for a full OS if you are a power user (though it definitely would do for a secondary machine as intended), but for at last half the population (not underestimating here) it could very well do as a full time OS.

People really need to stop assuming that just because they are techies and like to use advanced programs on their computers that the mass population has the same or similar needs. They don't.

Just because a world renowned concert pianist would find a Casio 61-key electronic keyboard USELESS for his work/daily needs does not mean that hobbyists who spend an hour or two playing a few of their favorite songs would too. Same concept applies here too. People saying this is useless are the proverbial concert pianists thinking their needs represent the needs of the world at large.

The best part is its easy, you turn the computer on and type the website you want to go to. It would also eliminate tech support headaches as I imagine not having any extended functionality also means there are less security holes to exploit.

And if something does go wrong you can probably press a RESTORE button that wipes it clean and reinstalls within 5 minutes. This could potentially be a JOB KILLER for places like the Geek Squad.

You would also not lose any of your data because it's all in the cloud. So all your favorites, e-mails, pictures, and music that you access through the net would all still be there.

GENIUS.

This certainly wouldn't replace a full blown computer, and would definitely be aimed at the lower end market, so it doesn't take away from Apple sales. I think if this becomes massively available I will definitely buy a netbook or even all in one PC (if they ship it on them) like this for my parents.

So I need at least about 10MBit up/down internet to use this OS normally, say Editing and Store HiDef original Images and Videos.????

as it's been stated, google os does not appear to be targeted at the power user. editing hidef is not a concern here. at least not now.

So I need at least about 10MBit up/down internet to use this OS normally,

No.

say Editing and Store HiDef original Images and Videos.????

Editing HD video is not normal use for a netbook. Storage is on a server. Uploads would be dependent on your connection speed, but editing could be processed on the server.

Interesting....

And I bet, it will do Flash just fine :D

I bet it won't. In fact, I doubt it'll even support flash… Google are just as supportive of web standards as Apple are… and they both want the open web standards of HTML 5 and CSS 3 to prevail over Flash.

internet connections will be reliable and full time within the next 5 years via 4G. This is classic first mover advantage on Google's part. Very smart business move imo.

flash media will solve the local storage problem.

Until you travel to another country (happens easily here in Europe) and get hammered by the roaming charges. (On T-Mobile NL it's 2€ per MB within Europe)

Maybe i'm old fashioned, but I still want a full OS (although maybe slightly scaled down appropriately), even on a 'netbook'. I constantly need access to my stuff regardless of internet availability and speed.

I love Google Docs, spreadsheets, etc. but for important stuff I still use open office/MS Office.

I know cloud computing is al the rage, but really I want the cloud as an optional space to put stuff when I want, not to house everything.

So, if i take my netbook on a plane, i won't be able to use it for anything? this "OS" just bricks your netbook basically, its useless. people will be putting windows 7 on their netbooks. google shouldnt release this until its a competent OS...

I am not going to waste time trying to debunk your paranoia or conspiracy theories.. But in the absence of any evidence of Google inappropriately using customer data.. I will continue using them and their services, as do millions of others. You can do what you wish.

An yes there is a world of difference between "spying" and machine-served ads. If you don't understand that difference, I am afraid I can't help you further.

Here Is How Is Really Works

You don't have the guess.

Google has the design documents on-line now and the source code for the enntire system is available.

All those asking "what happens when I'm not on-line" or "I don't want my data in the cloud" --- The device will work fine, off-line. Applications are cached to the local storage and will run until a new software version replaces them. Data can live either inside the device or on your local home or office network servers or on some remove server. The target hardware is a netbook type device with a decent size hard drive.

A good example is email. It will live on a google server until you download the messages where you put them after downloading is up to you, on the device or on your local file server.

What About Security? All user data is encrypted. It appears this is not even optional. There will be user accounts on the device and users can share a netbook and you can know the other person can't get at your data because it is all encrypted. Yes swap files and temp files as well.

Could you please add this feature... It is Open Source. It is available today, right now. Down load the source and you can change it any way you like. No need to wait for Google to make a change or add some feature.

Will there be multiple versions and will developers need to write code for each version? Yes. It is OpenSource so potentially every person can modify his/her copy of the operating system. But, all desktop apps run inside a broswer. This provides a standard environment for them

Will it crash? Every app runs inside it's own copy of the web browser. Apps can NOT interact except by limited means. This means one bad app can't crash the whole thing. Google is assuming that CPUs will have many more cores in the future and is designing this to take advantage. Everything that can, runs in parallel. They measure boot time in seconds.

Does it run Linux? It is linux. Under it all is the same software we've all seen for many years. The graphics is based on X11. Much of the software is very mature.

Will Google steal my data? Read the source code, figure it out. You should be able to PROVE your answer and not have to guess.

Bottom line: Will you all stop complaining about things that "might happen" that have already been addressed. Read the on-line docs and even try it out. then if you don't like something, fix it.

Fly Virgin. Free WiFi. No joke.

Guys saying that local storage is good and etc... Sure! But remember that Chrome OS is NOT your main OS. It's the OS that you have on your netbook, given that you already have an awesome computer! You want a netbook to be portable and cheap, so it has bad specifications. Therefore, it can't run a full OS in a decent manner. You don't store your MP3s or your photos on your netbook, you store them on your main computer. You have your netbook because you often need to communicate with people on the go, check your mail, etc... Often, your netbook will have 3G, so you will ALWAYS be able to connect to the net.

This means that Chrome OS makes sense for that use.

I have an iPhone as a netbook.
I can't see myself ever getting a Chrome OS device, or for that matter, any netbook.

I'm sure it might appeal to some people, I'm not too thrilled about cloud computing/data storage for everything, or for even most things.

But too each his own.

Haven't read all the posts so may be repeating, but...

What worries me about Google entering the OS market is, unlike MS, Apple, etc, Google's starting point will be how to harvest user data for it's various purposes and the OS itself will be built around that initial purpose. IMO that's bad from almost every point of view.
