The exact opposite. Apple handle all the CC issues, including chargebacks. They host an online store, make your app available 24/7 to the general public. They provide a backend infrastructure to support leaderboards, trophies and synchronization.

They handle basic marketing and promotions, they also handle subscription management as well.

The developers then in turn get to develop and not worry about all that.
your term only apply on arcade indie, indie not developer. Subscription the worst offender. I prefer box or one year payment less hassle. .Easier for consumer also.

Personally I do think Google are stupid here.

They want to gain users from iOS to Android.
They could have played this well by promoting the fact if you want to play Fortnight then Android is the place to be.

Got some good PR out of this and pushed it to the general public.

But no.... They threw away any chance of being able to do this......
Silly silly management.
Considering that they will be next I think google was smarter then Apple in this case especially with their history with fortnite also Apple is dumb you knew epic is doing all this junky stuff on android why do you need this headache but I guess it’s a good thing I don’t run Apple...

It applies to all developers. They all get the same protection. And I have no idea what the reference to Box is all about.

take turn. We dont take turn. Really dam joke lol. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
** never will apply to me or other developer.

The only issue is there is no other place to go, you do know ever other company invests time and resources just like Apple, this is the very reason they are in an Anti Trust lawsuit at the moment. 100% unfair tactics and abuse of power.
Have to disagree
If I understand correctly you take issue with the 30% but considering that not epic nor Spotify has successfully created a full platform to compete but rather use the base of other platforms to complain that’s a problem
Also I might be wrong but every time a subscription comes up it’s compared to Netflix has Netflix complained at all/yet

Sorry can you rephrase that
The only thing I understood is yearly Apple Arcade that I’m pretty sure exists

please someone confirm or deny

For those noobs , epic just want to troll apple , previously they in play store run away because of greed but try again to troll apple and google.

** i have install fortnite in my ipad mini to see it is the rumor is true or fake seem when click to purchase v point are the link existed ? It not.
** Google usually not strict as Apple but when they found something fishy within your apps they will terminated on the spot while Apple with good support respond what is mistake and we can appeal ,re-do according to their rule. I do respect apple support . 30 % is nothing if we can get good support and platform.

ya apple arcade, apple provide a platform for developer indie and apple help in turn payment issue, platform and all those hassle thing which indie developer doesn't need to think.

This is much bigger topic than the 30% commission Apple and Google get from their stores. That's just an excuse to start legal actions, and put pressure on governments. Check who owns EpicGames... the founder+Tencent. Tencent, the same chinese company that developed WeChat.
This is part of the war US vs China, you can not look at these topics individually, Apple/Google vs EpicGames, TikTok sale to Microsoft, WeChat ban... those are just small battles in the big war.
And no, the reason of the war is not to "give costumer the choice to pay how they want". LOL

I get it the developers think 30% is too high. Perhaps Apple and Google need to come up with a sliding scale based on either total downloads or revenue the app makes. Would this satisfy the developers? Apple and Google still get paid all the work they do on the platform.

probably the most sound neutral statement I’ve seen in the first two pages of this thread thus far.

unfortunately as a game becomes more popular the more bandwidth through the distribution store for downloads + updates to the game (sent in by Epic in this case) would demand and occur. A sliding scale that lowers would not reflect this unfortunately. It’s a great idea and may potentially occur yes. Probably THE best idea so far. We’ll see how this app unfolds.

many here forgot of a time (or didn’t know) when providers hosted games for developers n also had a fee. Providers failed to even maintain their App Store and limited which devices it would work on. That was a failed maneuver.

You can also sideload apps on iOS. This whole argument that apple's system is somehow more restrictive is absurd and untrue.

On iOS you have to resort to paid app signing services to side load apps but even those are temporary compared to free and permanent app side loading on Android. You are in denial if you think Apple isn't restrictive and that's just one of many examples. Another great example is how they restrict what you can and can't run on the device you've paid for like blocking a lot of major open source apps like Retroarch, Kodi, etc.

This is just dumb. Im actually for the app store rules for apps that chose to be distributed via that method, but I do think you should be able to sideload on Apple like you can on Android (or Mac or Windows). That way if an app doesn't want to distribute that way they should be able to do it themselves. I own my phone, it should be my choice (not Apple's) as an end user and companies shouldn't be forced to pay apple a tax to access Apple's customers.

The security argument is just a smokescreen - if an app that was supposedly reviewed and vetted can do what Epic just did, is the App store really protecting me, or is it a false sense of security?

A lot of people use car analogies, but Apple's control is exactly what Net Neutrality is trying to prevent on the internet at large, and which Apple has lobbied for (ironic considering how they operate their app store).

If Verizon could force a cut from companies to provide preferential access its customers, even just prioritizing the companies who pay and slowing those that don't and not outright block them, Apple and end users would be up in arms.

The app store is no different. Sure you could move to TMobile or Android, except they have the same deals but with different companies.

All it is at its core is gatekeeping to extract profit and taken to the extreme by everyone in the chain will lead to a tragedy of the anticommons.

Just making sure someone has noted the EPIC store charging policies and how anti-competitive they are? More for all those that are saying how great EPIC is and how right they are.

sorry i hate their "surprise mechanic" 🤣

No clue who this company is, never heard of them. I don't game. Customers who do will likely pay the 30% premium. Epic just wants to increase its profits by 30%, forcing users to purchase credits elsewhere. That creates a confusing and poor user experience. Epic would not do this if it cared at all about its customers' experiences.

You know from a basic high level,  does not have to allow everyone in their house. I can deny you from coming in my home, retailers are not forced to allow everyone in their stores. This reads as entitlement 101 to me. You come into my home, put your feet up on my table where I eat- um please leave.

Hi Epic. You may want to look into how Rovio and Zynga is doing this days. Your 15 minutes are almost up.

Lol so create your own store where you sell your games you idiots. I am done with Epic and their greediness. Apple Store has helped you become famous and now you are turning a blind eye.

Simple solution.

Epic should release their own devices and their own device's app store for playing Epic games. Then they can keep 100% of the profit. When it gets big though they can start letting others onto the platform, but take a cut of course..no free rides. Then eventually the others will get mad at the cut and pull some stupid maneuver and Epic will ban them. They'll go off and start their own paper companies.

Don't mistake 30% as benevolence either. It is even more pure greed.
On what planet is Apple/Google's revenue cut "greed"?

Apple and Google have provided ANYONE and EVERYONE a mass market distribution channel to billions of eyes. Billions. All you have to do is make a quality app and put it up. There is nothing else like this in the entire world of marketing and distribution. Thousands of other industries and businesses would fall over themselves for the privilege of just paying a revenue cut to get their products sold and distributed like this.
