Apple are trying to market the iPad as a computer and yet they won't allow side-loading of apps on iOS (unless you're a developer/tester/using 3rd-party software) whereas they do allow it on a Mac. Why are Apple sacrificing Mac users to such an unsafe environment? Or do Apple believe iPhone/iPad users are too stupid to be allowed to side-load apps safely? How come Mac developers aren't necessarily expected to pay for the development tools they're using?

Apple and Google are making excuses so they can get away with lots of money that they didn't earn. They've been bullying app and game developers by forcing them to pay a 30% cut that is way more than they need to maintain the stores and their eco-systems (again, no 30% cut for Mac software development) and it's about time they stop.
I guess you never seen the Mac App Store. Also while you railed on Apple and Google. Throw in Sony, Nintendo and Xbox(MS) as well. 30% for all apps running on their systems. Their dev kits are in the $10k to $20k range. Need assistance, better have enough incident credits.

I mean, if the percentage magically changed to 0, the difference would be a drop in the bucket to Apple and Google
2019 Apple App Store had an estimated gross sales of 50 billion dollars, imagine if you 'magically' researched before you commented. I'll let you do the maths on what the estimated percentage of that is, and I assure you it's not a 'drop in the bucket' to either company.

Epic Games is taking on two of the most profitable companies in existence, I better hope their war chest is large. Oh, what's that, Epic games are 40% owned by China? Ohhh, that's how they can afford to sue. I am starting to think there is more sophistry going on here than the surficial "memes", and "freedom fries". China would benefit a lot from a weekend App- and Google-play store.

The Play Store is one of many ways to download apps to an Android device. Google is free to run it how they like - I don’t see a problem with this. I’m not sure that Epic is going to have a case here.

This is in contrast to iOS, where the Apple App Store is the sole way to run a native app on the device.

Except that Epic are suing both for almost identical reasons. Apple can use that in their case to point out the hypocrisy and say “see, even if we DID open it open they’d STILL not be happy”

Utter nonsense. YOU might, you’re not the center of the universe though.

Unpopular opinion: this is a set up collaboration by Apple, Google & Epic Games that was fully planned out in order to first call out bring to light their respective App Store policies, put them under scrutiny and ultimately have them win because Epic is in on it and will put a weak case, forever solidifying Apple/Googles stance on the commission they make to future cApp developers, and Epic profits from this whole thing from all the extra exposure and extra customers they will now have by being in the spotlight.

I know it seems implausible for drama like this to be so orchestrated for us but there are really intelligent marketing companies out there who will play out the script of a movie as real life drama for our eyes to see like this.

If the end result is Apple/Google keep and reinforce their App Store payment policies, and Epic Games adds 1 million new players to their game, please ask yourself if this wasn’t already all planned from the beginning. Sorry for the schizo post but it’s the first thing that came to my mind after seeing how quickly this has all played out already, it seems orchestrated

Rather than lawsuits, there is another solution. But it would require app makers banding together, and updating there apps to break Apple and Google rules on purpose, thereby in effect shuting down their stores making everyone unhappy and bringing Apple’s fee income to a screeching halt.

I am sure Apple and Google would hold out for awhile, and it would be quite the standoff. But I think the pressure of millions of unhappy users who refuse to buy a new phone because they would lose their favorite apps would eventually cause Apple and Google to blink and come to the negotiating table.

Why Apple doesn't introduce tier for their commission? E.g. the higher the revenue is the less % Apple should be taking.

also to consider, whoever has the most advertising budget will sell more copies, can also have higher revenue? Or whoever got feature by Apple will also get more sales from it, will also get less %. Is that fair?

A viral campaign asking Tencent how many gamers are there in Uighur detention camps would be interesting. Then Epic will have a hard time complaining about Orwellian something something.

And also as developer, we know some bugger/programmer coup de tat. Solution is simple, if you paid 99,999 didn't get what you wanted 0 support from us. hahaahaa..

** the reason we bought original software. Support.

If the support is like the way your express your ideas...

Imagine your ISP asking you for 30% of your salary because they provide Internet service to your business...

They already do that. Their business model is providing faster speeds and lower data caps. My ISP gives me 1 TB a month with 2000 mbps speed. What is that, like 70 min of internet? But for $10 you can get another 3 and a half minutes.

Unless you are uploading. 2000 mpbs down / 40 mpbs up...

For every millionaire app developer their are 1000s of great developers who would be thankful for the chance to be highlighted.

Get rid of Fortnight and all those eyes will look for something else.

yezza.. but sometimes Microsoft support from India. Wait slow down, to fast. Adobe support, quite fast ticket. Apple support, yet been asked.

* I wouldn't buy from the company offer $$$ paid ticket support. Freakin your product please answer lol. Why I need to paid to get support?

People buy phones to play games. If this weren't true Apple wouldn't have put that much effort on building faster phones with multi-core GPUs and technologies like Metal designed to boost graphics performance. You're very unlikely to use any other kind of heavy-duty apps on a phone but for gaming.

I like your thinking. When I buy a phone I am entitled to the games on the platform. Forget all the AR and VR stuff out there. Forget the photo-editing and art tools. Forget the graphing calculators and the architecture tools. If an app is heavy-duty than it must be a game and therefore I, as someone who purchased a phone, have a right to it at no extra cost.

It's all about their shareholders, it's the same reason iCloud storage doesn't go up from 5GB. If you can get 20 million people to spend $1 on a higher tier that's another 20 million earned. You could give users a better experience but Apple chose to make more money. I have no issues with companies making money but if for a worse experience I'm against it. Just like the App Store, Apple is judge and jury here.

You are not against companies making money as long as they keep giving you more for less?

I dont understand this kind of ppl.....

So Apple start from the ground, from zero and all the money and time they invest in it, if you dont like simply walk away and shut up.... they deserve to make money from it

How much was Epic making per day from in-app purchases? Now they don’t want to pay for their success to Apple & Google.

Google allows them to do their own thing on their platform so I hope that lawsuit gets thrown out.

Apple just needs to let them install their app from safari and tell them to **** off.

2018 around 800$million

I’m curious, don’t in-game purchases work the same way on PS4 and XboxOne? Like you have to buy through Sony’s and MS’s store and are subject to their stores’ terms and conditions? If so, I wonder if they will be next?

No. In fact, both consoles even allow 3rd party stores.

Like EA Access, where you pay a subscription fee (directly to EA, not to MS or Sony) and can download and play a whole library of games on either xbox or ps4.

I bet back in the 80s you were also arguing how AT&T spent billions developing a nationwide phone system and should be able to dictate who was allowed to connect to that system.

Bootlicker.
