So sick and tired of Google these days. Time to say goodbye to Google forever. You surely won't be missed. They have built a bad reputation with all these privacy leaks. Horrible business practices as well with selling our private information to 3rd parties. Stop supporting companies like these. Enough is enough. It's time to draw the line.

I'm so glad I don't own an Android phone, or any OS that's running Google for that matter. I've lost complete trust in these companies.

Good riddance, as it was a worthless service anyway. We tried it at work and sucked -- used something else.

I still can't believe how Google+ had a chance to unseat Facebook…and they totally screwed it up by keeping the beta locked down. Historical fail.

Google and all associated apps (most pertinently Android) are designed from the ground up to collect and distribute your personal info. Color me not surprised at all that their culture of ad sales didn't figure this one out earlier, and doubly not surprised that their weasels, er, lawyers told them not to disclose it.

It really brings to light how arrogant/dumb google is. Do they understand how the Internet works? They know about the new culture of Wiki leaks and whistle blowing? Did they really think nobody would ever find out about this?

Google would not have so much data if it were dumb.

They completely botched the launch of this thing.

I remember when it was brand new, in the beta days; there was a surprising amount of buzz about this from friends and coworkers. People were intrigued about the potential “Facebook killer” and wanted something new.

But they restricted access to it for so long. You needed an invitation from someone already inside to join. You had to be 18+ to even receive an invitation (I was in high school at the time). The rollout was incredibly slow and everyone lost interest.

As others said: I’m surprised that it even lasted this long.

In addition to shutting down Google+, Google is introducing several other privacy improvements. More granular controls will be provided for granting Google Account data to third-party apps, and Google is going to limit the number of apps that have access to consumer Gmail data.

What good do more granular controls do if the stuff you marked "private" isn't at all in the first place?

Choosing to intentionally not disclose a data breach is the lowest of the lows.
Especially when they admitted in internal documents that the reason is "it could invite more regulatory scrutiny".

And this is exactly why we need more regulation, not less. Because giant companies continuously show they will do the wrong thing for consumers every time if they aren't being watched closely, can get away with it, and don't pay a price for it.

Yes, but remember "Don't be Evil" - :)

Google stopped that a long time ago. A few weeks ago I read an interview with their CEO where he said that nobody at Google bothers with self reflection and thinking about whether anything they do is moral, because it's all pointless and that the only way you can find out if something is moral or not is to just do it and see how the public reacts.

It was disturbing to see someone so powerful express that. If you're an international organization with hundreds of billions and no morals of any sort, is there any limit to the evil that you can do? I suppose they can't violate the laws of physics.

Thing is, it’s hard to completely remove Google from your life. Their search engine still has significant utility for most people and as such I have to use GoogleAds. Still prefer it to other search engines, and I’ve tried a few. Hate their Privacy antics though.

Whats sad is that it took this to shut that service down. The should have been shut down years ago purely on failure of the product.

Google: If you really care, delete all customer traceable data. All of it.

Google Shuttering... In the media world I guess they just can’t use the C word anymore or it fell out of favor.. Shutters are for windows.. “Google Closing” would have been more appropriate..

Under GDPR, companies can be fined up to 4% of global annual turnover for violations. Failure to disclose a breach is a violation of GDPR.

I wonder if the EU will come after Google for this billions. Something tells me not.

You will struggle to get me to believe Google+ ever had “thousands” of users...

Active ones probably not but a lot of folks probably looked at it once and never again and are being counted as ‘users’.

It’s a pity really because the whole ‘circles’ notion was not a bad one. Different spin on twitter lists etc.
