Another example of a company that allows third parties access to data the user wants private and then hides this. How can anyone trust Google to keep your data private going forward?

Google+ was DOA, seemed futile the day it was announced. Glad I never signed up and never had my data breached from it.

The thing that bothers me is their failure to say anything because they didn’t want the kind of backlash Facebook got. Makes me happy I hardly used the service and try not to use anything google if I don’t have to. Certainly I don’t put any private info when I can avoid it. So no google photos, no phone number for two step, fake addresses etc

Does this mean Google Wave is coming back?

Which one was Wave

Well that sucks. Not surprising though. G+ has been languishing for a while. I'm one of a few remain users. Time to detach myself from the Googleverse completely.

As others said, G+ never really got off the ground. What's interesting with this announcement is the emphasis on "for Consumers", as if they plan to keep G+ around in some form for business users?

I still think this will come to bite them from a regulatory point. To keep this quiet is almost an insult and abuse of their users' trust. But this shuttering does not surprise to me to say the least. I moved away from Gmail years ago, and continue to tell people that I'm wary of putting all of my eggs into Google's basket in terms of their productivity tools — because you just never know when they'll make a workflow-breaking change, and this is another example of that.

Social networks will never survive if they don't go to where people are. If people need to go to them, it's not integral to one's social life. Facebook has excelled at being everywhere and developing the engaging experience that people's social needs demand, to an almost unhealthy point, I'd add.

Not a good day for G!

Aren't California companies with California users obligated under state law to notify their users of a data breach?

Google (really Alphabet) is legally a Delaware company. Lots of tech companies file there because of the friendly corporate laws.

To be honest I thought they had been winding it down for a while now but it’s still a shame for those still using it.

Google mutters, "plus it would make us look bad, for no reason." Yes, telling the truth might make people further question whether handing you large amounts of information is a good idea.
First thing I thought of when I saw this.

All the Google defenders who say it’s not a big deal that they amass all this data about us because they don’t actually sell it. This is why I trust Apple more. Not because they don’t make mistakes — they do. But they work hard to keep you data encrypted and on devices you control as much as is possible. Google would rather you store all your information on their servers. And when there’s a breach or someone makes a mistake, that’s all it takes to give away the whole farm.

I don’t believe this breach was anything more than an accident, but failing to disclose the breach is likely in violation of California law.

I remember when Google was trying to force Google+ integration with YouTube a few years ago. Most hated that, myself included. So it's no surprise Google+ flopped, and good riddance.

They completely botched the launch of this thing.

I remember when it was brand new, in the beta days; there was a surprising amount of buzz about this from friends and coworkers. People were intrigued about the potential “Facebook killer” and wanted something new.

But they restricted access to it for so long. You needed an invitation from someone already inside to join. You had to be 18+ to even receive an invitation (I was in high school at the time). The rollout was incredibly slow and everyone lost interest.

As others said: I’m surprised that it even lasted this long.

Exactly how I remember it. By the time I’d scored an invite, G+ was beginning to empty out. I’ve just looked back through my posting history and beyond a couple of dozen posts in my first two weeks of having an account on there, there is only the odd YouTube or Google Maps comment/review from when Google was bolting G+ into every service they owned and mandating its use.

Whilst Google does have some worthwhile services over and above search (Gmail is ok, YouTube is very good, Google Photos is great - and supports HEIC format images, which the iOS OneDrive app doesn’t), but G+ died soon after launch and Google never really showed any interest in reviving it. Shame, as the world really does need a viable alternate to Facebook.

I'm open to suggestions that are not FB, IG, or any other data mining front end ;)

Funny that I just found out google+ was still a thing yesterday when i was looking at a list of 2018 popular social network sites.

Whether or not people think it was useful, this is another example of Google just abandoning a service. I feel sorry for anyone who uses it, especially for professional reasons (I know some educators use/used it).

Not sure what the point of for keeping it for businesses if regular users can't have an account, or why any business would want to invest any time on it when Google could just pull the plug at any time.

All of my friends and colleagues use Facebook. Even my granny is on there! Whether you like it or not Facebook serves its purpose well. I just don't see a day arriving anytime soon where a 'rival' attempts to kill Facebook and we're all like "oh yeh, let's all sign up to this amazing new service instead that.. err.. does the same thing as Facebook"

If you want to chat with each other, daily, vs. posting stuff for the ages, Discord works pretty well.
