Too much lag in response time for any of these streaming games services… not worth it at all.
GeForceNow is really good for me. I was shocked at how good the latency was. I was even able to play an online FPS (Apex) and compete just as well as I do locally. It is dependent on your internet connection and how close you are to one of their servers obviously though so your mileage may vary.

GeForce Now is actually pretty great nowadays. Especially the 3080 service. Pretty much undetectable input lag.

Stadia is probably the best service from a technical POV, it works just great.

But Google made it DOA with its commercial strategy.

All that was needed was wait for Google's usual non commitment and here we have it.

I play a lot of elite dangerous and was gutted when they canned console support. I just bought it on steam and play through GeForce Now. It’s really rather good tbh. Play on my MacBook hooked up to my 65” OLED, in 4K

It's quite easy and tempting to mock Google at this point for this, but kudos where kudos is due. They tried it, it failed, but no user is worse off for it. Refunding everything is not something I would expect others to have done.

They have the funds to do so, because they've monetized us so thoroughly.

It probably costs less for them to do that than it would to keep the service running for longer than they plan to. Plus good PR at same time. Smart business move.

Unless you were the biggest customers (Pro) that were lining their pockets. That money belongs to Google because they were the most loyal and shouldn't mind.

i could have guessed this would happen, as I bought one yesterday! 😂
Glad there’s still a little time left… I wish they’d make the pro subscription free until the end though!

Google today announced that it is shutting down its Stadia cloud gaming service, with access set to end in mid-January 2023. Google will be providing refunds for all hardware purchases, all game purchases, and all purchases of in-app add-on content made through the Stadia store.

Stadia was not able to gain the traction with users that Google was expecting, which is why it is being shuttered.Players can access their games library and play through January 18, 2023, with Google expecting most refunds to be complete in mid-January. During the winding down process, some games may have gameplay issues, especially games requiring commerce, but the majority will "continue to work normally."

While all hardware purchases and all software transactions will be refunded, Google is not refunding Stadia Pro subscriptions.Ahead of the shutdown, the Stadia store has been shuttered and all commerce on the Stadia platform, including in-game transactions, has ended. More information on refunds for Stadia users can be found on Google's website.

Google Stadia has only been around since 2019, having launched in November of that year. The service was designed to allow for cloud-based gaming across a range of devices, including PCs, Chromebooks, Macs, iPhones, and iPads.

The old Google would have kept this failed service going for another few years. At least they are creating and shuttering their failures faster.

Moral of the story is to never trust that Google will keep anything around for very long. They're a search and email company, period.

In a surprise to absolutely nobody...

Well yes and no. As a non-gamer, what was the problem that Stadia is trying to solve?
Compare
- people generally want to watch a stream of new movies. Streaming services (as opposed to owning a stack of DVDs) is a really good fit for that.

- people (as far as I can tell) want to listen to a combination of familiar favorites and new music. Streaming services seem to match that need.
(BUT *I* care much less about discovery and much more about control of my favorites, so I do not understand the appeal of music streaming at all.)

- OK, now games. Are games like movies (people constantly want to play new ones) or are they like me and music (people want to stick with their favorites forever)? Or something in between like most people and music (play favorite franchises, but every few months these get updated/modified in some way)?

I honestly don't know the emotional relationship people have with games, and so how this plays out.
I assume Google thought the relationship was like movies or music and so having access to a largish library was draw enough, whereas the relationship is more like self-curated music ("I *only* care about these seven games. If you don't have them all, then you're worthless to me; and if you have anything extra I don't care")?

Is this a correct analysis? Or was it even dumber things, like costing too much or terrible UI?

All that hardware to become non-functional? Really environmentally-friendly there, Google.

We really need to move past Google and their grip on the world.

Stadia hardware is just a regular Chromecast Ultra + a Stadia Controller which will continue to be usable with PC games. So, no hardware will become non-functional as a result of this shutdown. The fact that they’re refunding it regardless is SUPER generous.

Apple, do yourself a favor and shutdown arcade…leave gaming to Xbox and PlayStation

Name checks out :)

Casual Phone gaming might not be for you... but it is for a lot of other people. I play PS5 games and Arcade games.

My kids ( and my pocket ) love Apple Arcade. It could do with more content and they need to look more at the AppleTV as they have the Xbox and PS5 controllers working for it. Perhaps they'll up their game and bring out a AppleTV with an M2 and really up the gaming potential.

Imagine my shock!
Now it's Luna's time.

Microsoft and Nvidia seem to be the only ones having a moderate success.
