Unless you were the biggest customers (Pro) that were lining their pockets. That money belongs to Google because they were the most loyal and shouldn't mind.

Maybe I misunderstand, but wasn't Pro just a monthly subscription for a service you actually used?

What's the justification for why this should be refunded?

And you know why? Because Xbox Cloud and GeforceNow are an option, not the only option. Both can tap into your existing libraries of games you own and you can instantly stream them to your phone other other applicable device. Alternatively they have a small subscription you can buy to get access to a massive library of over 400 titles to stream, Xbox Game Pass especially since it's the best deal in gaming.

Versus Stadia, where you had to buy every single game for full price as streaming only. Why would you pay $60 for Assassin's Creed Valhalla on Stadia when you could just pay $60 or less for it on Xbox and not only get a native version you could play on your Xbox but also a streaming version you could play on your phone?

And these were all issues brought up to Google that they just ignored. They were banking on the phone crowd to jump on board, despite the fact the service was only available on Google Pixel phones and Chromecasts, while Xbox Game Pass for Cloud is pretty much available everywhere (except iOS because Apple sucks and hate fun. Xbox Game Pass on iOS would kill the joke known as Apple Arcade.)

Why is Apple not sued for cockblocking Xcloud on iOS? Everybody knows Apple is only doing it to protect Apple Arcade. It’s clear abuse of power.

It would be great for consumers if we could play Xbox games on iOS but it’s bad for Apple their $$$$$.

Cloud gaming always sounded so cool and promising from a business standpoint, no consumer actually cared for any of these "solutions" - technologically it is really impressive, but the cost to revenue ratio unsustainable given the business model these things run off of.

Surprised it took this long tbh. Time to update https://killedbygoogle.com/.
and Google wants Apple to replace iMessages with RCS messaging protocol ?
“We’re hoping that Android users stop being blamed for ruining chats,” Google global vice president for integrated marketing for platforms, Adrienne Lofton, said. “This is Apple that is responsible, and it’s time to own the responsibility.”

They were. Apple vs Epic. Microsoft's vice president of the games division Lori Wright was a witness for the Epic side, to which Apple's lawyers made the argument for "just do webapp lmao" despite the fact webapps run worse than native apps.

The only way Xbox Game Pass is getting on iOS is when the government antitrust legislation forces Apple to enable sideloading and alternative app stores, which probably won't happen until 2024.

Alas, it is laid to rest with the 3DO's and the N-Gauge's of the video game industry. May it never be forgotten--as the tiny, barely noticeable little squib that it was.

I’m other news, I found out just now that Stadia is a thing, actually exists, and is being cancelled. All at the same time.

It’s almost like it was co launched with the new Batgirl movie…

Apple, do yourself a favor and shutdown arcade…leave gaming to Xbox and PlayStation
I think it's fine the way it is now. O1H, it fell short of being a "huge hit" (at least from what we were expecting when they initially had a slew of AAA studios behind them) and there's A LOT of room for improvement. Especially with communicating ahead of time about games that are leaving (e.g. Tangle Tower and Punch Force). OTOH, I believe Apple's got deep enough pockets and other factors going on to keep this going even if it bombs. Plus, there is an audience for people that just want some curated selection of games that are ad and IAP-free (even if it's not that many).

I really enjoyed my free trial, but I had to admit that Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls was one of the major games that kept me going. Two other factors that are keeping me from resubbing are
1) 64 GB storage
My original plan for this working out was I'd have a few scant "real" video games, with the rest being digital implementations of board games. AA did throw a wrench in the works, as your typical higher production video games can eat up 2 to 8 GB apiece!
2) I've been finding plenty of other mobile and tablet games to keep my busy, even without AA
On the iOS, I have plenty of digital bg to get through, but really, whatever else crosses my radar in video games
On the Android side, I've been finding a few premium games to keep my plenty occupied. The phone does have the advantage of being played anywhere

It's quite easy and tempting to mock Google at this point for this, but kudos where kudos is due. They tried it, it failed, but no user is worse off for it. Refunding everything is not something I would expect others to have done.
That's what I was thinking too. I mean FWIW, we also mock Apple when they jump into ideas that show they'll work. Retorts include "but they'll do it better/right", but the fact remains that they're risk averse in many ways, and leave that to other companies.

Why? Because it's Apple's store, and they can offer what they want, that's why. It's how business works. If you had a business, you wouldn't want the government telling you that you had to offer a product, simply because. It's not how we operate in this country. You have the right to either sell/offer something, or not. In this case, Apple doesn't want to offer Xcloud, so they aren't. You can either buy an Android and have your Xcloud and vote with your wallet, or you can keep using an iPhone. But what Apple wants to offer on their own store should be up to them.

Brings back memories of Google Reader, Picassa, and many other services killed by Google. There’s even a site dedicated to document them. right now the count is 274:

But... Nintendo is the market leader...

In Japan yes, Nintendo Switch has dominated everything by over 90%. Globally they're a close second behind PlayStation. It's not an understatement how much the PlayStation 4 swept the 8th console generation. They to this date sold over 114 million units, outselling the Xbox One over 2:1, and even to this day PS4 1st party games are still being made despite now being two years into the new generation.

The PS4 is/was just pure greatness. It was the console for the masses, loaded with amazing blockbuster AAA exclusives that defined a generation, games like Insomniac's Spider-Man, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part 2, Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, and more.

Yes. 5 million. That’s a huge number of households in the market. Directv and Dish have 14 each. Charter has 15 million tv subs. Comcast has 18 million.

5 ain’t so bad now is it? Those companies have been at it for 28, 42, 60 and 59 years. Soooo…. Your point?

So 6% market share (76 million pay tv subscribers) after 5 years. Good job, Google.

Google has eroded all trust in the idea that anything they make will stick around for more than a couple years. Of course people didn't feel safe investing in the platform.

At least they're giving refunds, but nobody who invested into the platform knew that would happen.

Edit.

I forgot Switch is 9th gen. And in that case, it's destroying PS5/Xbox X/S and absolutely the unquestioned market leader (it's also winning in monthly sales).

I thought we were talking about current gen. So we'd be comparing Switch to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Otherwise, Wii still has PS4 beat.

The service was free. You were basically paying for a loyalty program. You got discounts for being a paying member. To me its gray area.

I have more of an issue of everyone stating that they are getting full refunds. Free tier users are getting full refunds people who were paying for the loyalty program are getting partial refunds.
