Google's Xerox is in ful swing. First Google store now this.

I guess it's sad for the industry that the only true innovator is one sole company - Apple.

there we go again, another apple fankid who insinuates that Apple was the first to come out with a tablet. WRONG!

No idea why Appleites are ragging on a Google tablet, it only works out for the best for consumers. It's like saying: LOL @ Google! why are they even making one? Let's have Apple compete against itself and maintain high prices for all our iDevices!

Sure, Apple is an innovator no doubt about that, and it forces other tech companies to work harder, but let's just remind ourselves that Apple only caters to a small percentage of the computer/electronics market.

and FYI, the picture is a mockup, not a real shot of the ChromeOS tablet.

Doesn't go into his (extremely popular) branch. There are plenty of forked kernel trees for specialist builds (embedded, etc.), or sometimes just random "somethings" which are never even submitted to Linus. That's one usage of "Open Source".

Doesn't matter. He's still a dubious person imho.
I am not a fan of any flavor of Linux. Can you tell ? ;)

One good application, I think, would be for large businesses (even though Google doesn't seems to be promoting it as so..yet).
That is, I think Chrome OS suggests:

- web based apps or cloud based services.
- lighter, cheaper front side hardware (2GB RAM only)

Large business has problems with constants hardware updates, compatibility issues, centralized data management (although Chrome OS does allow for local storage), centralized app management and patch updates.

Basically, enterprise manageability, maintainability issues. Also having dumber front side machines (not necessarily tablets) with limited data, helps with data security.

P.

In which ways are these inherent advantages over Android? Everything you said applies there as well.

By the way, talking about lightweight, the iPad has only 256MB RAM (and will probably suck at multitasking..but 512 should be fine for iPad 2 to fix that), so Chrome OS seems to be a little bit on the fat side if it requires so much RAM. They sure as hell won't whack in much more than they need, because it will draw power and increase costs.

So wait, now google is making competition for themselves by having two different os's. android and now chrome os. what are they just trying to figure out which one survives?

there we go again, another apple fankid who insinuates that Apple was the first to come out with a tablet. WRONG!

Again, NOBODY said they were first. Why do you people never learn to read and interpret correctly? We've had tablets for bloody ages and they all had something in common: they sucked donkey balls and nobody bought them.

Now suddenly, a completely new approach hits the market and ... you know the story.

It's not about being first. Apple were hardly ever first with anything. It's about doing it right.

Because it's just a lame 1:1 copy of the iPad concept. Why didn't Google come out with this last year? Or 3 years ago? It's not that hard to think of Android as a tablet OS (Who needs Chrome OS anyway...). They could have had the balls to go first, but no... Apple has to do it, do it right, and then Google just takes the blueprint and copies it. Happened with smartphones, same for tablets now. They can claim all day long they had plans to do this before. Why didn't they release a product then before Apple does??

I would call $300 cheep. If they can sell at $300 with a contract, they may get some early sales. If they do have a Wifi version, it will cost more than the Verizon version. I can't wait to see people explode when they find out the better version costs less.

So you think something like this (with the rumored specs) would sell for only $100 more than the typical smartphone?

Highly unlikely.

Again, only if Google is willing to take it in the shorts, Xbox 360 style, to get its hardware into as many hands as possible.

My guess is they needed to have a somewhat more security optimized/lighter weight OS for cell phones. Chrome can be a bit less secure and use more resources. You will be able to do more stuff with Chrome, but it may crash more and eat more battery. It will probably run slower, thus need a bigger processor.

This is all just a guess.

This is great, the quote from the article is just the hardware specs, but in the comments to the article, the author says:

Hardware is pure speculation -- my source didn't have any details for me. Launch date and carrier he did have.

Cool - new toys, new competition, everyone wins.

Everyone is trying to best the iPad - including Apple themselves.

They just have an advantage of having designed the first one :D

And by "first one" i mean that in the usual apple sense - first one to sell and work well enough to be the benchmark everyone tries to beat.

Multi-touch tablet computers are finally a credible reality, i feel the world is getting brighter.

Multi-Touch was the deciding factor to the success of the iPad and the flop of the other tablets.

And don't forget... unlike Apple's claim it will support the whole internet via Flash 10.1.

Ugh, why do all of these devices have to come tied to some sort of data plan or network?

Why can't all of these companies get that not everyone wants a phone in everything or that we don't want to pay for yet another subscription for everything?

Thats why I got the wifi iPad. I did not want yet another monthly fee. Especially when so many places have wifi now.

U won't have a monthly fee if u choose not to with the iPad 3G version. It's pre-paid.

Well at least spec wise it will give the iPad a run for its money if true...but if they want to succeed with this they'll want to make Chrome OS more user friendly than Android, and better marketing than the N1 ever had....otherwise it will end up just being a geek favorite.

Hope the Verizon-only rumor is false. I loathe Verizon! Anything but, and I would be tempted. Maybe Google with be smart and offer Wifi/Bluetooth only version.

All the hardware in the world won't make up for software that isn't right for the job.

That is why apple products tent to work and sell so well - they do both.

That way they know any weak links are down to someone that they can fire.
Kind of makes it more efficient that way. :D

Oh, yeah. Apple just worked on a tablet since...let's say 1983. Just about how much research from the MessagePad went into the iPad? Exactly. Apple worked on a tabled before Google existed.

Anyhow what I meant is the blatant rip off the keyboard if the conceptual picture is right.
