Google to Launch Chrome OS Tablet in Late November?

Who's to say Google doesn't have a secret version of ChromeOS that has pieces of Android in it?

For example: Android Widgets & Apps?

Don't their Apps use a Virtual Machine to run anyways? That means you could easily run it on ChromeOS as a "Window".

I'm no expert on Android, but I can't see it being *that* hard to Merge parts of it over to Chrome...and google has been hinting at this for awhile anyways...

There is a real simple solution to that. Run a browser on Android.

I don't get why anyone is enamored with Chrome OS.

It's not about being first. Apple were hardly ever first with anything. It's about doing it right.

Because it's just a lame 1:1 copy of the iPad concept. Why didn't Google come out with this last year? Or 3 years ago? It's not that hard to think of Android as a tablet OS (Who needs Chrome OS anyway...). They could have had the balls to go first, but no... Apple has to do it, do it right, and then Google just takes the blueprint and copies it. Happened with smartphones, same for tablets now. They can claim all day long they had plans to do this before. Why didn't they release a product then before Apple does??

How the heck is it a 1:1 copy? They're both tablets that have touch input? Do you know the specifics of the ChromeOS tablet? No. You're dumbing down the argument by claiming its a 1:1 copy because, theyre both tablets? Talk about lack of specificity.

Now, you're asking why Google didn't create a tablet before Apple (which i find interesting as you stated earlier that 'its not about being first'). Apple is a software and hardware company. They make money from both. Google makes its revenues through ads (adword, adsense). Now WHY would Google go through making its own tablet just to put ads on their devices. Apple mainstreams the tablet genre, Google expands on it. Simple as that. And btw, do you really think that adword/adsense will continue to be advertised on Apple's closed ecosystem? Most likely not, with iAds being launched. Its why both companies went on a buying spree related to ad networks to their respective mobile platform.

Yes, Apple is a true innovator. I love Apple because they challenge other companies to innovate, and to think outside the box, and that's a good thing for the industry as a whole and even better for the consumer, but lets not underestimate Google's contributions to technology as a whole. I mean chances are, many in here are using google-related services.

I appreciate the original idea behind Chrome OS, but the world has outlived that vision... People complain that Apple is too restrictive with apps. Now imagine the iPad without nay apps at all... That's this device.

Not correct. For starters they are allowing Flash/AIR, HTML5/JavaScript and C++ based applications to run on ChromeOS. Right within the browser. They have something called Native Client which takes a regular native binary and runs it in a restricted sandbox inside the browser.

2GB of RAM!! just to run a web browser?? How inefficient is Chrome OS if 2GB is the base model RAM.

Look here . It's a full fledged computer - no crippling involved. The novelty is that it runs everything within the browser - Flash/AIR Apps, Native C++/OpenGL Apps, HTML5/JavaScript/webGL apps everything goes! You can even install apps locally.

there we go again, another apple fankid who insinuates that Apple was the first to come out with a tablet. WRONG!

Where do you hear anyone saying Apple came up with tablets 'first'?
First desirable, usable, affordable tablet, maybe.
Best, definitely.

Stop with the straw men.

Just too derivative

Come up with something inventive Goog! You've got billions to spend. Find something to surprise us.

Of course it will have apps. From the chrome store.

Besides, what do you need Tegra 3D graphics, 2GB and a webcam for, if a browser is all the software you're getting? Chat Roulette? That's about as yesterday's news as Chrome OS.

3D graphics are included to play 3D games. Right now you can install the unity 3D web player and play games like lego star wars in your web browser. Chrome will have that functionality built in.

And 32GB storage? It doesn't even come with a media player outside the cloud. I'm sorry, I just can't picture this.

You dont have to be connected to the internet to use a web browser.

It's not like Google has no alternative. They should just through this out in favor of Android. (Maybe they have an ace up their sleeve, though, and Chrome OS has been significantly modified or merged with Android. Who knows.)

Android will eventually be folded into Chrome.

anyways lol at the people saying this tablet copies ipad. Just because it looks like an ipad doesnt mean crap. How else is a device that is like 95% touchscreen supposed to look? Functionally they couldnt be any more different.

That's like saying apple's mighty mouse copied PC mice because that little scroll ball thingy is in the same place where PC mice have had the scroll wheel for years. Well duh, its going to be in the same place... where else are you going to put it?

In the end, I really don't see the difference. Android and Chrome-OS are probably both 95% the same anyways. Both are unix/linux based, and both probably share a good chunk of code. Chrome-OS looks more like a normal OS, while Android is designed for a small 3.5 inch display.

We all know the new iMacs will eventually run a iOS level for touch... since 95% of iOS and OS-X are the same, it's not really a big deal.

Android = ChromeOS

iOs = OS X

Windows Mobile 7 = Windows

You're just taking out the pieces you don't need.

If I remember correctly Chrome OS, will load the internet, and the internet only. So that means no music, movies, etc...Hopefully this has changed.

Interesting, but it seems a strategic gaffe for Google and their partners not to leverage Android in a device like this. I guess we have to wait to see the final product before passing judgment but with all the steam Android is picking up, I don't understand maintaining a separate operating system for a tablet device.

Chrome OS and Android have a lot in common - Linux, Webkit, HTML5, Java engine. I can see Android staying on mobile devices and Chrome OS moving onto tablets, netbooks. Eventually they will converge, but it should still be pretty transparent in their current mode. Google are betting on web apps being the future, and the device these apps run on are not that significant - iPhone could make use of them too :).

Google ... go for it, but just don't care and I will not buy it because it's just one more thing you will be tracking and storing in your vast database.

. I guess you've missed the note about how iTunes tracks every purchase you make and Apple are selling that information to ad partners.

In order to stitch together these communities of users, Apple has been analysing the purchasing history of its 150 million iTunes account holders worldwide who also use iPhones and iPads. Its own hardware produces a separate stream of data about what users do, and where and how they do it. Notably, the privacy policy associated with the iPhone 4 allows Apple, for the first time, to collect anonymised real-time location data on its users.
source.

Google isn't the only one doing "evil" - not that I think Google or Apple are evil. They're just trying to make some money.

Google's Xerox is in ful swing. First Google store now this.

I guess it's sad for the industry that the only true innovator is one sole company - Apple.

LOL I hope the memention of Xerox was meant to be ironic given the history of Xerox v Apple v .... and the gui.

Although have to say I personnely have trouble believing Xerox had anything early involvement with GUI development. I mean we are 20years in and their Photocopiers still have the most horrible un user friendly "beep at me cause i don't think that extra step would be needed" interfaces I have the displeasure to use every day, except for maybe Technogym.

As much as i Love Apple's products their innovation isn't really the technology but the attitude to the technology that all the spec in the world don't matter if it's god awful to use and so ugly that you don't want look at it.

Doesn't go into his (extremely popular) branch. There are plenty of forked kernel trees for specialist builds (embedded, etc.), or sometimes just random "somethings" which are never even submitted to Linus. That's one usage of "Open Source".

Very true. A good example is Android :). Sometimes you just have to fork, even if it upsets the GPL evangelists.

Wasn't Chrome OS supposed to run on netbooks only? Not after Apple released the iPad.

Wasn't Android supposed to service phones in form and shape of a Blackberry? Not after Apple released the iPhone.

Google is left with no ideas whatsoever. Slap on top their duplicity with the Net Neutrality issue and you got yourself the perfect Microsoft successor. Only 10 times more evil.

iOS and Android has client side apps.

Not as a necessity. You can block access to the app store and YouTube and whatnot (at least on the iPhone) and get exactly the same results. I know Android has a lot of catching up to do business-wise, but Chrome OS isn't even released, and it's not targeted towards the business world from what we've heard so far, so it probably won't come with the nice centralized management features out of the box.

I still don't see any benefits of Chrome OS over Android.

Looking forward to it. I hope it drives Apple to step up delivery of updated iPads - camera, more memory, faster processor, etc. All good.
