I'm pretty tired of people complaining about who is implementing competitor's ideas. Both sides are guilty. Haven't people figured out that's just how the world works. Apple takes things from Android, and Android takes things from Apple.

I've always been parcial to the HAL 9000 computer from the movie 2001: A Space Odessey.

Star Trek computer? Puh-lease.

Star Trek computer = lights and beeps, I don't recall it actually talking, unless it was a recent Star Trek series.

Regarding 2001:Space Odyssey, I found this movie to be unwatchable as much as I tried to watched it.
Last time I did tried to watch it, I endured the long part with the cavemen, and as one threw a bone up in the air and it converted to a space station, the cable service went out!!!

"Everything is voice aware"

This is what SIRI should be. I do not think it will be hard for android since everything is more tightly integrated anyway within the OS. Between Native and 3rd party apps.

Given their malware ridden app store, I guess we will start hearing "I need your credit card and social security number to process this email"

Must be a tough job being head of UX For Android ... given how generally unpleasing it is. I'm curious if that is a result of this guy's direction, or if he's trying to be a voice for change to improve Android. The parameters he has to deal with are exponentially more difficult than Apple has to deal with, due to fragmentation of the platform.

I like how Google and Apple's approach to voice commands really mirrors their corporate philosophies. Google is going with a an authoritarian, detached, and non-personal approach. Apple has one that you could call your friend. There's advantages to both, really. I like the idea Google is putting forth ... but you can see why Apple would never do that. It's not in their DNA. The UX wouldn't match the company's brand if they did.

well said. unfortunately some people need these device wars to justify their investment in such technology.

I simply prefer to enjoy my purchases. My 4S works fine for me, whether the next version of Android has a Siri feature or not.

Speaking of which..

Baby mama was upset I fixed the kids PB one day. I informed her it was Fresh baked Multigrain bread, with organic peanut butter with a hint of sea salt, topped with Italian blackberry preserves with no sugar added...

that's how daddy rolls :)

Now you made hungry!!!

Hey - EVERY companies copies every other company to some extent, then expand and make it beter. Apple copied the concept of a Smartphone, apps and touch screen in the first place, then expanded and made it easier and more accessible. Then others copied multi-touch but gave us better OS enhancements like copy / paste, notifications, voice recognition, etc. Then Apple copied those and gave us Siri (well, they BOUGHT it at least). And so on.

Everyone - get over it. This makes BOTH platforms better. I never understand why everyone wants a winner and a loser, or why the company or platform specific crazed dedication. Jeez, what does it matter as long as you got what you want on YOUR device...grow up.

They're talking about Star Trek: The Next Generation, where the computer was as much a character as anybody else in the show. You could command it to do things, and have conversations with it. One episode in particular I remember was "Remember Me" where Dr. Crusher thinks that everyone else on board the ship is slowly disappearing one by one, until finally she's all alone with nobody but the computer to talk to.

It was voiced by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. Of course this carried through to the other series too, like DS9 and Voyager.

There was no talking computer in TOS at all?

I had a hard time watching it too, I think it says a lot about modern movie culture and directors like Michael Bay who think that any shot longer than 2 seconds is too much. I actually watched much of 2001 on VHS tape and sat on the fast-forward button a lot.

BASIC Interpreter: UNDEFINED VARIABLE 'Siri', LINE 20

10 REM The Majel vs Siri wall
20 LET Majel = Siri + 1
30 LET Siri = Siri + 10
40 GOTO 20

I disagree on an error. The C64 would clearly do the following:
Majel would be MA (variables could only be two characters, 3 with a % to denote integer only)
Siri would be SI
You don't declare variables, thus anything used for the first time is 0.
Everything would be in all caps.
This would run.

If you use Siri to read your emails to you, if your email text sent back to Apple first and then it's read back to you?

Or will Siri just read your email without any connection available?

TTS of that form should take place client side. Lets put it this way, theres really no justification for doing it otherwise.

Believe me I tried to watch it many other times, and something would happen. That last time I mentioned before happened on a night when I stayed up until 11:00pm waiting for the movie to be shown.

I don't mind very long movies as long as I don't feel it contains too many useless shots in it.

lol @ how someone else at Google (was it Eric?) said that Siri wasn't the way to use your phone because you don't want to communicate with your phone because that makes you communicate less with humans.

I submit that communicating with your phone via Siri is simply a different way of using your phone. Under that logic, texting would also be a device that's apparently limiting your communication with humans.

For his point to even make sense, you'd have to never use a phone or email.

Anyway, I'm interested in seeing Google's take.

Now that Apple has shown the way forward again - this time with an implementation of voice technology that is actually useful - it's "safe" for everyone else to follow suit.

Thought it didn't matter! According to Google Exec's...

Of course, Google's version is only coming out later because thief Eric Schmidt wasn't privy, now that he is no longer on Apple's BoD!

Aren't Android's voice input capabilities already capable of a majority of what Siri does?

I don't think Siri can read emails at all, just text messages.

On the topic of reading things to you, I hope that the competition spurs on more development in text-to-speech technology. It still sounds horribly artificial, and that hasn't changed a lot over the years. Not just on Macs or iPhones, but everywhere -- PCs, GPS units, etc.

Other than perhaps "Alex", who is relatively new, all those voices including with OS X today (like Fred, Zarvox, Cello, etc.) have been pretty much unchanged since 1993 when they ran on machines with 33 MHz processors.

Would that also apply to this forum???
We are having a blast communicating with each other in a 'safe environment'; otherwise we may be fist fighting with each other when we don't agree on something.

I would say that computers have improved our chances to communicate with people that otherwise would be unreachable.
