Ps. I love my iPhone, and I think Siri is a pretty much a gimmick (haven't played with it a lot tho), but it's a push in the right direction towards a 'real' AI (sort of how google describes it). Baby Steps right?

I do not understand. Apparently the poster does not know what Siri is or does, yet the verdict is that Siri is a gimmick.

Does not matter any way. Apple is sure cashing in in this gimmick, and every one else wants a part now that apple has shown every one how it is done... As usual...

There is nothing stopping anyone from just making a platform agnostic service and selling a subscription to it.

I am concerned what Google knows about me but they provide services that are based inside my browser. As I have said before, "if my toaster has a decent web browser, I will be using my toaster".
You nondevs think it is so damn easy don't you? Do you think usable software just grows on trees?

What's stopping anyone would be not having existing research and development to launch a product like SIRI. Apple went out and bought SIRI.

Yes, it's a gimmick.
Powerful... hardly. Useful... I'll give you that.
Annoying is more like it.
Bad enough people talk loud when they're on the phone in public, now you have morons barking orders to their phone (repeatedly in many cases) when pushing a few buttons will do the same thing without annoying everyone around you.

Boy, you sure have an opinion, don't you? But thank you for letting us know...

why can't apple come out w it's own navigation ASAP???

It's like .. droid.. sees some good feature from ios.. and able to copy and deploy it soon.. HOW long does apple need to bring out their own navigation software(3c) ????

It's getting REALLY stupid...
It's pathetic... really

It's pretty obvious that Apple again, is the chic fun geek in the class who gets all the girls like does roller blading while kicking it in obj-C while Google is the nerdy dork who sits at the front of the classroom who tries to copy whatever it is his buddy is doing but always failing it by making it a bit nerdy and gets nobody's attention.

I never said it was easy. Really? Siri is Naunce based product that Apple bought, has a massive infrastructure for, and it was down when it is in BETA? Time is money and it takes money to make money.

I absolutely loathe programming but that is far from being ignorant. Regardless it is still a service and not based on the local hardware's performance or abilities.

And that's why Google products and services have no soul.
A name goes a long way for normal people but I have been saying "Computer..." for a long time.

Wait normal people have relationships with inanimate objects that have certain corporate logos on them?

Hey - EVERY companies copies every other company to some extent, then expand and make it beter. Apple copied the concept of a Smartphone, apps and touch screen in the first place, then expanded and made it easier and more accessible. Then others copied multi-touch but gave us better OS enhancements like copy / paste, notifications, voice recognition, etc. Then Apple copied those and gave us Siri (well, they BOUGHT it at least). And so on.

Everyone - get over it. This makes BOTH platforms better. I never understand why everyone wants a winner and a loser, or why the company or platform specific crazed dedication. Jeez, what does it matter as long as you got what you want on YOUR device...grow up.

Tony

Exactly. This isn't basically a copy. People forget to understand the difference b/w a feature and a competitor.

But let me correct you on some of the things:

"others copied multi-touch but gave us better OS enhancements like copy / paste, notifications, voice recognition"

What? Copy/paste till date is unbeaten in iOS. Even Android has gone out of its way to copy Apple's implementation of cut/copy/paste. But its all right, sometimes you can't make something totally different.
As for notifications, Apple upped the notifications with great lock screen capabilities and overall functionality (copying tidbits from jailbreak, etc)
Voice recognition has been the same throughout the years. The only thing that has been bettered is the sampling algorithms. The real breakthrough was Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing combined together into Siri (and probably other platforms).

"Then Apple copied those and gave us Siri (well, they BOUGHT it at least). And so on."

Right. But you somehow had to say: "Apple copied..."

Majel & Siri

So when do we get the first YouTube video of Majel and Siri talking to each other?

I've found Siri useful in an odd way. Being middle-aged, I find it much easier to dictate long texts with Siri rather than using the keyboard.
But then I looked at what I was doing -- talking to a computer on my phone that would write something out for the person I was trying to communicate with. Instead of just calling the person in first place.

Yeah, about as original as the notification pull down in iOS 5 ;)

I'm pretty sure Android wasn't first with that. Didn't WebOS introduce that feature first?

And hey, even if Android was first, it would be a rare and very small instance of Google coming up with their own idea. I've recently started wondering what original ideas Google has ever had and I've had a very hard time coming up with any. Hell, even search wasn't their own idea.

Android is the PC of smart phones. They'll always take shots at Apple while falling on their faces. They just don't have the vision and will always be a huge creative step behind.

My apologies... I forgot that his is MacRumors.
Opinions are only welcomed if they fall inline with Apple.

More Kool-Aid please. My cup runneth empty.

Not really. Plenty of us have a love-hate relationship with Apple, but if you disagree with something Apple does, you should at least have a better rationale than "I'm right because Steve Jobs was a hippie megalomaniac who wanted to exert control over the world and be the next Hitler!"

Is that asking too much?

LOL...
Thx for the reminder. ;)

Well some people seem to believe that they are better human beings for being loyal to corporation X (insert whatever value for X you desire). Corporations actively pursue this since it makes for uncritical consumers. All advertising is essentially aimed at reinforcing the idea that product Y (as part of lifestyle Z only obtainable through corporation X), will make you a better human being.

It is hard to resist when the message has been re-iterated every 12 minutes to us since birth.

What I'd like to know is what Google's plans are to monetize on this.

Me: "Majel, where can I go for lunch?"

Majel: "There are 12 restaurants nearby. I have sorted them by distance for you. However, Joe's Burger Shack is offering a 50% off promotion. Would you like to hear more?"

Targeting iAds.

How would it benefit Google? Targeting Adsense. Adsense tracking can be disabled, iAds tracking can not.
iAds was the only thing that came to mind for me as well but do you agree to that when I send in my warranty information?

I have no need for any iDevices and I do not buy anything from iTunes. Apple has my information for warranty purposes and nothing else right now.

No Web OS system was not the same.
