There is sooooo much BS going back and forth about Apple fanboys and Google fanboys. Just wait and see how the maps are and pick the one that you like.

As much as I love debating Apple v. Google products, I must concede that this post was very refreshing! :D

What are you talking about? I'm predicting that Apple fan-boys will be OK with Apple releasing it's map app with its own mapping technology and yet will jump all over <insert any non-Apple company here> whenever said company decides to release a feature, technology, or app that comes anywhere close to resembling what Apple has already produced.

I think it would be safe to make that prediction about any fanboy of anything.

iOS maps won't have Turn by Turn

Am i the only person that thinks IOS won't bring what we think they will bring when it comes to maps. I had an android phone for over two years when i switched to the 4s and I love it but hate it too. There are things both companies do great as well as bad.

Google does Maps great!! plane and simple! When navigating it stays in your status bar that enables you to multitask and its accurate as hell!! It just works.

I don't think IOS will create this awesome Maps app that does turn by turn because there are TONS of gps apps in the appstore from garmin to tom-tom ect. Those apps will NEVER sell if turn by turn is already integrated in IOS. Who would pay 50bucks for an app that you can get for free?? The one main advantage IOS has is its apps.

I think IOS will create an awesome maps app that is superior to google maps on IOS but not on Android!

WebGL would work on iOS?

In my brief search yielded no but yes, except for showing iAD.
I guess they wanted to take different route with iOS
OR they will introduce WebGL this time with iOS 6 with Apple flavour.
Whichever the case, new iPhone's graphic capability it'd be interesting for whatever in 3D.

Maybe Apple's been waiting to save battery life. my personal experience, GPA use up juice.

An Apple Maps app will not have streetview as so far Google appear to be the only people who were willing to get the cars rolling around taking pictures. I've not seen an 'Apple iStreetPhoto' car around, have you?

My iOS maps app has Street View. It's made by Apple. Of course it uses Google's backend...

But that's the point, the backend didn't need fixing or changing, Google is smart and has a solid offering there. What needed fixing was the front-end Apple was putting on top of it.

I would replace the word systems with product.

Why ? Systems has been what we've been calling them since the 70s when all the systems vendor were into vertical integration in both the consumer and business spaces. Now, only Apple is left in the consumer space and business is the last place where integrated systems vendors are making money (and less and less so as server/storage OEMs are more and more relying on outside software vendors to power their hardware offerings).

Product is generic and can be confusing. Hardware is a product, Software is a product, a combination of both is a product, an accessory is a product. A system is just what it says it is, a full-on software/hardware solution.

No, let's not replace any words.

Umm...look at the company they bought (posted in a previous link) they're photos are so accurate that you are able to do street view pretty well without taking the photo from the actual street...to the point that users will be able to submit photos of inside of buildings so you can walk into them.

I'm sure there will be an app so folks can take their own shots and easily upload to the map app.

Map this

Most people don't realise that Apple holds back on features so as not to compromise on battery life.
Using turn by turn on Android is useless if the battery only lasts 2 trips.

Apple already doesn't use Google maps for the location services in Reminders, which gives a different address to that when using Maps.

The inconsistency is annoying to say the least.

Uh ? 2 trips first, is plenty for battery. 2nd, you're in your car or other vehicule, how about just... you know... plugging in the device...

No seriously, Apple compromising on optional features that don't need to be on all the time for "battery life" is inane. I can choose myself how I want to spend my battery power.

Heck, let's just not have any OS on the iPhone, if it can't boot, it can't use battery at all.

Apple should give us the best maps in iOS, regardless of provider. If that's Google now then okay. If Apple wants to move away from Google eventually and do their own maps that's okay too. I just do not want an Apple "beta" map product in iOS just so Apple can spite Google.

I wouldn't worry about that. I would bet money that as soon as Android was announced and Jobs went thermonuclear, there has been a Maps team working on replacing Google Maps. Apple wouldn't be stupid enough to replace Google Maps unless it was not only as good, but better. Otherwise they look like idiots.

This means squat to me because, for whatever reason, Google Maps for iOS has been several generations behind where its at on Android. I welcome Apple's new mapping kit with open arms..... as long as it doesn't suck, hehe

Haha, Google reeks of desperation with this event ONLY for maps and conveniently just days before they know Apple is going to leave them behind with amazing 3D maps and navigation of their own! :D :apple:

Like using turn by turn on TomTom, Navigon et al on iOS kills battery? Or like using Maps on iOS kills battery?

GPS apps kills battery in every platform

Even if Apple takes Google Maps off the iPhone, Google will most likely build an updated Google Maps app for iOS. I suspect this will be announced at the event. One to say they have the best Maps app for iOS and to out Apple's plans.

You couldn't be more wrong. Steve Jobs used to always say that apple definitely was a software company.

In his words (and I'm paraphrasing here): 'apple's products are all about the software. The software may come in a sexy box, but it is still the software that is the most important.'

Apple is all about the user experience. In order to provide the best user experience, Steve wanted total control of the software and hardware of Apple's products. He didn't want to provide software/hardware to company X only to have them build a device or software that diminished the quality and reputation of Apple products. It has been this way from day 1... even when they peeked in at what was going on at Xerox (that's a nod to all you folks touting Apple's innovation).

Anyway, it's always been about the synergy between software and hardware.

The Next Dimension of Google Maps?

Will they siphon off even MORE of your personal data to create a substandard mapping experience?

I don't think that flat-out lying is in their best interest - then again, it is Google.

What substandard mapping experience?

Google Maps is terrible - both the website version and the iOS version.

And that's not even getting into the blatant privacy violations and unethical decisions they use to collect the data which is used for it.

iOS version is done by Apple, blame them.

And how is web version terrible? Ah, yes, it is Google, so is terrible.

As is said in Spain, you hear bells and you don't know where

It uses Google's data and I already went into why it's bad.

Numourous violations of privacy, spying, and info theft via WiFi snooping.

Google is not a tech darling, no matter how much tech blogs try to spin.

Wait a sec....

We're assuming that Apple is introducing its OWN mapping system. How do we know that Apple's announcement is AN ADD ON to the new Google map system?
