Have you considered compromising on Edge? Chromium based, chrome’s extensions work fine, but much lighter on resources.

I've tried but it's not up there yet with Chrome on M1 for usability, efficiency, etc. Edge is about equal on Windows 10 though and is my backup browser but Google still has the edge on security with Microsoft recently hacked. And, the original reason why I switched to Chrome originally because of Internet Explorer insecurity.

That's because Safari keeps killing active tabs. Watching a film on Disney+? Nah, you don't need that. Kill!
Only on iOS, right? I don't see that happen on macOS.

Safari just uses less resources, always has. It's also behind in web standards, which I was ok with, but then they also killed all ad-blockers. I feel bad for anyone who's ever developed a Safari extension. Firefox it is for me. Chrome goes in the dustbin unless I'm debugging my site.

Terrific post, and right on about the security.

I don't have any resource issues on Chrome on my Mini (I7/32GB), I currently have 7 (named) windows with ~60 tabs or so open across them (tabs are also pinned/grouped as needed), several extensions, etc. I'm also running in MacOS: VSCode, ST2, Sketch, Soulver, Safari (yes, two browsers :)), Postman, Messages, dozens of term windows (and various servers/services running) - and also running a VM with Winders™ that's running VSStudio, MSSM, MS-SQL, IIS. As it should be apparent, I'm a developer, so that should be an additional indicator why some of us use Chrome.

Can't hear any fans, certainly not spun up, I do run mine on a nice big, ultra BB fan with the bottom plate removed, so YMMV
Yeah, I'm never too concerned about desktop power consumption. But on my laptop, things like Chrome using 10% CPU just idling or using my RAM as a dumping grounds while browsing make a big difference to battery life.

Honestly, I'd prefer to use Safari, but until they can fix that incredibly sophisticated function known as tab-synching, I am stuck using Chrome. I have noticed it has improved quite a bit in terms of trimming down the bloat recently.

I finally moved from Safari to Chrome because an increasing number of things I accessed were getting incompatible with it.

I have to agree though, it uses A LOT more resources. (I tend to keep tabs open for extended periods - days - and that seems to add to the problems with Chrome.

But at least those pages work under Chrome.

Safari is always first for me, but I keep Chrome for the reasons many have pointed out. What I haven't heard is anyone say Brave. I have all the browsers loaded and I want to keep Safari and a Chromium browser. Brave has good features but seems really unpolished compared to Chrome and Edge, so I"m thinking of dropping it. Anyone use Brave?

Brave broke people's trust with malware-like redirects. With other reputable browser choices like Chrome, Edge and Firefox, Brave doesn't deserve a second chance.

You do realize that has nothing to do with a browser. Different team, different software, different architecture, different everything. Exchange is software on a server run by Administrators. That's where the issue comes. Microsoft's own 365 email servers didn't get hit with that. But if you really want to compare, then look at all the issues Google has had in the past, and you will see, they are just as susceptible to exploits as everyone else. Some they didn't divulge until many years later.

I wouldn’t use chrome if u pay me - it tracks you and takes your information - anything google I avoid - I hate big tech and I am a conservative.
You do realise that Apple is also a big tech, maybe bigger than Google, tracks you for their own use and Apple can also block you from all their services. 😂

i can't imagine any browser being slower than Safari on Big Sur. Some websites just hang and don't connect.

Yes, that’s why all my Macs don’t have the T2 chip as it can be used to track me.

For tracking, don’t most ad blockers block trackers as well?

I’m not overly concerned with my “privacy” as I’ve been using the Internet for far too long to warrant any sort of concern for it. Google knows a lot about me, but so what though? I give my data to Google (amongst others) and their services to me are made better. I can always “delete” my data with Google if I choose to do so. Personalized ads? That’s what Ad Blockers are for and most of them block trackers as well.

Thank you Google for predicting what I like to buy or search up: I feel so violated that you guys know that!

Deleted Chrome from my 2018 Mac mini and couldn't be happier. No more freezing, spinning beach balls, hard resets. What a pile of crap software that was. Strictly use Safari now and nothing else.

...you mean "keep you Mac hotter' while browsing

I do notice when downloading multiple file >50+ at anyone time, my MBA becomes a steamy weenie hut..

Come to think of it, Firefox doe t too, but not as much "because the rest are queued up"

Google just has one basic option "allow" or "block" any downloads at all. You can't download 4 files only like FF but queue the rest without an add-on

I really can´t understand why a mac user install this piece of ****.

Nothing against your comment, agreed, but here’s one reason, I use safari 99.99% of the time... but I don’t know why there’s that odd link, page, feature or sometimes even a work related web front-end service that only works properly on Chrome 😞.

At this point don’t know if it is Safari a bit behind regarding browser features compatibility or if it is that the Chrome world is more lenient and allows to take “illegal” shortcuts that wouldn’t fly on safari and devs took the easier path.
