There's a serious advantage to going with an in-house AI solution - Google wouldn't need to wait for OpenAI or anyone to add new features, capabilities, or fix issues.

I'm just not sure how useful Gemini will be on a phone. Apple Intelligence seems to be implemented more practically in ways people would actually use it.

I wonder how many people against side loading will say this without a hint of irony
If you have a top secret military base and install a ground level side door, it’s one more vulnerability to worry about.

AI is a feature that is opt-in, and doesn’t come pre-loaded.

Very clear difference if you understand software

If Apple HAD made a full generative AI, they'd be calling for anti-trust proceedings!

"APPLE IS FORCING YOU TO USE THEIR OWN STUFF AND NOT LETTING YOU CHOOSE!!!1!"
Um, I am pretty sure that A) you have the choice to use OpenAI on iOS but not a choice on Google, and B) you always have the choice to not choose Apple. Don't understand your vitriol. To each his/her own.

Go tell the EU that please. (Not arguing - I agree)

…and Google thinks that people trust them..?
Question for ya ... mist program needs a helper program and it doesn't run without it. how do ya run it or better if ta know of a better program. id like to know what is the name.

Came here to say this.
At least Google is fairly up front about it. AAPL makes people believe they have privacy but it’s just marketing hype. And the sheep love it, whereas Apple has failed users with vulnerabilities and using their data since Tim took over. Anything that makes more money is what works for Tim’s AAPL - all about the shareholders!

With Apple and AI do you? I don’t even trust Apple with the data, no matter what they say. People are giving too much away to tech companies now

I don't trust Apple with my data either and I don't understand this blind trust in a big corporation that is so big that all it takes is some small negligences here and there for a big hack to happen.

That was my point, sorry I was unclear with it. Since Apple is allowing off device AI to be used as an option, Google is having a go at them, but I reckon that if if Apple had done what Google is doing now, then Google would be shouting criticisms at Apple for being anti-choice.

I am all for Apple giving users the choice whether or not to use ChatGPT, and given the standards and decisions of all the companies involved in this discussion, Apple is my only viable choice. At this stage, you couldn't pay me to use Android!

Why are you on an Apple rumours site if you (clearly) hate the company?

I wouldn’t be surprised to see their own “complete” model in the future, but with all the anti-compete vultures circling it seems they’re taking a different approach to AI. Choice is good.

It's the current Holy War. The PC vs Mac wars that were fought years ago have cooled down a bit, it's now iPhone vs Android. I was a bit shocked at first, but now I've come to expect any space for the discussion of Apple products will attract Samsung Evangelists, Google Devotees, and a general assortment of trolls.

I think in the near future “noAI” phones will sell like hotcakes instead. People will get tired of this fast enough.

Fun fact: you can already do most of the “features” from the video with Siri

Trust is a nuanced and multifaceted concept. Are Google trustworthy in the enterprise sector? Sure, as far as I can tell from all the way over here, but that doesn't impact me!

Do I trust them as a consumer to do and not do things the way I'm happy with? No way!

It can be nuanced, multifaceted.... and can potentially impact you. For example, Apple consumers use iCloud and Apple uses Google Cloud for some of that storage and therefore Apple directly and consumers indirectly are using (and trusting) Google. Trusting Apple also means trusting Google here.

Yes. At the enterprise level. Where they do appear to be somewhat trustworthy, as I already stated.

I still don't trust Android, Gmail, Gemini, Google Docs, etc. I have to use some of them because I'm required to for work, but I'm not going to use them more than I have to!
