This is the correct move. These things don't need large local storage. They do need fast, reliable connectivity. I hope Apple corrects this mistake. The few people who are using it to play Apple Arcade games can buy the more expensive version with more storage. Give everyone Ethernet as standard.

Also now that this is out, Apple needs to reverse judo and come out with the Apple TV Mini that's an HDMI dongle for $49.
I don’t know where this gobbledygook comes from but you do not need a 1gig ethernet connection on an Apple TV to watch a movie or play a game. My apple TV 4K gets almost 500mbps on WiFi 6 for heaven’s sake. Unless the box is out of WiFi range an ethernet connection is not needed at all for anything.

It only has Wi-Fi 5 and the SoC, the MediaTek MT8696 is awful. It's a quad-core A53 (or maybe A55). It's only 22% faster than the very slow CCwGTV. It's the same SoC as Amazon used in the 2021 version of the Amazon Fire TV Stick Max. That was a 55 USD device back in 2021.

Horrible device for the price.

It is a minor update just to say it supports AI. It doesn’t look like it will age well.

You aren’t double paying most os in smart TVs are awful and only get about 2 years of updates. TVs are less expensive now because they are smart. Are you willing to pay twice as much for a dumb tv?
How are TV less expensive because they are smart? Even if they are subsidized, most aren't as most manufactures developed or bought their own platforms or pay to have it, you really think not having them would double the price? Quite the contrary.

The "Google TV Streamer". They are really good at product names, eh?
If you think about it, it makes more sense than Apple's naming convention.

Apple TV, Apple TV+, and Apple TV App....

Very confusing for the normies, and even confuses techies here on MR.

"The Google TV Streamer is positioned as a high-end replacement for the Chromecast"

Meanwhile everyone on this forum has been claiming for years that cheaper is better, Apple needs a "dongle" device, etc.

That’s why I have a Roku tv. I pay once to have a simple interface baked in. No boxes. No extra remote. Though sadly even Roku is getting ad heavy

Run it though a pi-hole or similar. I never see ads on my Roku TV or Stick.

It’s about the fact that it’s a solid copper connection vs over the airwaves. It’s not always about raw speed.

It’s a stationary device that needs a constant network connection. Back in my day we put Ethernet ports on things like that.

But this is why they should have the Apple TV Mini with no Ethernet.

The Apple TV has got cheaper not more expensive though

Right but they are still making their margin by upselling storage. It’s cheaper overall but part of that is the components. I think they are trying to sell more of them so they are selling them for what Apple considers to be a bargain. But they wouldn’t be Apple if they didn’t have an upsell option with a nicer margin.

I do not need AI to recommend me stuff. I prefer getting no recommendations at all and decide for myself what to watch.
Agreed. I think AI will only be useful to people who have too much time on their hands and don’t know what to do with it or to the people who need their hand held all the time.

when a person relies on machines for everything then the machines will eventually control that person.

Imagine publishing this article without even mentioning the main competitor (Nvidia Shield Pro)
Classic clueless MacRumors article
The shield pro is literally trying to serve a different demographic than the Apple TV or chrome cast crowd.

Shield pro is definitely more so for gamers who for whatever reason want to use an android device. For whatever reason. Not the average consumer looking for streaming. Two different demographics.

While wifi may be stable enough for most streaming, the ethernet connection is still useful for a hardwired HomeKit hub.

alchemistmuffin So how long before Google kills off the API used for Chromecast? My bet is within four months,
Chromecast is built into Google TV so that makes no sense. Thousands of apps utilize it today. It isn't going anywhere.

Not just Google TV. ( GoogleTV has several vendors. e.g., Walmart Onn Pro dongle. So Google doesn't have to make a dongle for there to be a dongle with Google TV on the market. Sony , TCL , Hisense having GoogleTV as base OS on various models means the footprint is much larger than just Chromecast dongle sales. )

Low end $179 LG TV running webOS
" ..Chromecast support: Yes ..."

Samsung is off into "Screen mirroring" vs "casting", so they tend not to anymore.
Ruko also and firetv.

Can cast to a Xumo Box.

It isn't just Google TV, but enough don't that it is noticeable.

But the higher order issue is that Google is just walking away from providing a first party dongle solution.

" ...
In launching the Google TV Streamer, Govil-Pai said it was a response to trends, one being a shift towards “always on” TV.

That’s where device makers are creating new capabilities so that televisions are no longer just for watching entertainment but can serve double or triple duty, in this case as an artwork display when the TV's not on and serving as a central location for smart home management. ..."

The "Steamer" having a power cord that should be plugged into a wall socket is more so because router duties doesn't really always stay synched up to the TV being on.

Mistake is a pretty bold word to use. You always have the choice of not buying one. Other platforms give you the same services, including AppleTV+, without local storage and at a cheaper price.

More crucially this Google TV has gigabit Ethernet. Lots of TV boxes and TVs have Ethernet, but they cheap out at 10/100, which isn't enough to stream 4k Blu-ray. Admittedly that's a niche use, but people who have Ethernet to their TV are already a niche crowd. You may as well go all the way and make them happy

If these proprietary TV boxes can replace the Set Top Boxes and become truly universal Set Top box, then I might consider this. Just like eSIM switching providers, these boxes should be able to choose the providers and use it. Otherwise, all Set Top boxes already come with their own OTT Apps and the TVs themselves have built in OS and OTT Apps which I am using (than the set top box, I have disconnected set top boxes and use only TV based OTT Apps for watching content - connected to the router wirelessly). To me this is just another unnecessary device with power cable and network cable hanging!

As someone mentioned, it may be useful for those are into gaming.
Spectrum offers this in my area and its great full 4k res on everything.
