Why do they insist on showcasing these devices in direct sunlight? Won't that make it overheat / ruin the battery on the remote... possibly yellow the white plastic? Just makes me eyeroll 🙄

Mistake is a pretty bold word to use. You always have the choice of not buying one. Other platforms give you the same services, including AppleTV+, without local storage and at a cheaper price.
I know people don’t often use hyperbole on the internet. Or have strong opinions about things based on anecdotal evidence. Forgive me.

Roku’s UI is still basic compared to the rest, I agree. It’s still “app first” instead of “content first.”

That said, the ads on Roku have gotten worse and worse over the past few years. They’re really seeing how far they can push it.

I stopped using Roku because the performance is just bad, frankly. There’s too much jank in the apps. And they don’t have Twitch which I sometimes watch.

Hey, how do you make Chromecast/Google TV show only the apps?
Sometimes basic is better, I see nothing wrong with the Roku UI. I have a roku TV and i think it is great, the adverts are only on the right-hand side and can be easily ignored.
I have had my TV for 4 years now and it is still working fine. I like the U.I, prefer it to firestick.,

You aren’t double paying most os in smart TVs are awful and only get about 2 years of updates. TVs are less expensive now because they are smart. Are you willing to pay twice as much for a dumb tv?
My roku TV is 4 years old and still get updates now and again, the apps are certainly updated, I presume a TV using Google will be the same, and the same with Amazon fire OS. The problem is with TV manufactures like Samsung that use their own OS and system, one reason I would never buy a Samsung TV, also they are overpriced and not as good as people think they are.,

It’s about the fact that it’s a solid copper connection vs over the airwaves. It’s not always about raw speed.

It’s a stationary device that needs a constant network connection. Back in my day we put Ethernet ports on things like that.

But this is why they should have the Apple TV Mini with no Ethernet.
I prefer using Ethernet when I can, that is how my TV is connected, it is about stability, not speed as in theory my Wifi is faster than my Ethernet.

i don't think i will bother, my Roku based TV gives me all the apps I need, why would I waste money on buying another unit, be it Apple TV or Google streaming box?

If ethernet became standard on Apple TV, Apple will have to raise the price by at least $20 because Apple.
Do they not have Ethernet? I actually just double checked while I was typing this and it appears the 4k model is available with it. đź‘€

This is the correct move. These things don't need large local storage. They do need fast, reliable connectivity. I hope Apple corrects this mistake. The few people who are using it to play Apple Arcade games can buy the more expensive version with more storage. Give everyone Ethernet as standard.

Also now that this is out, Apple needs to reverse judo and come out with the Apple TV Mini that's an HDMI dongle for $49.
This Google Streamer is not going to be pulling people away from Apple TV. Go to the Android sites and not many are over the moon with this devices. WiFi 5 and a mediatek chip.

Haven’t even used it and I can say that I still think the Apple TV is probably worth the extra $30.

Exactly - you haven't used it or you'd know better. ATV is a terrible user experience compared to Google's which already had really amazing content recommendations without AI. ATV is always hyped and never delivers on the promise. Only pro to ATV is storage options which are only really valuable if you play games which almost no one does - and Apple doesn't even promote it anymore.

So how long before Google kills off the API used for Chromecast? My bet is within four months, and encouraging all users to switch to the Google TV platform.

"Chromecast" referring to the brand named dongles that were called Chromecast - not the streaming/mirroring tech which is still in there and is technically called "Google Cast."

Most apple users even prefer Google's experience over AirPlay because it works every time... AirPlay is often frustrating with things like smart TV's that support it.... VERY FRUSTRATING and it still lags. Google cast is almost always smooth as butter.

Anyone that buys this Google device over an Apple Tv is a fool, the way Google drops things I give this thing about 3 years and then google gets bored with it
The original Chromecast w/ Google TV is 4 years old and Google is continuing to provide software updates even with the new Google TV Streamer release.

The only thing that would convince me to park a Google TV device in my house is the promise of bitstreaming audio via Plex. Apple won’t do it so I have to hope Google will so that Shield Pro isn’t the only option.

Yeah. Let’s hope Apple doesn’t cave like everyone else has. Even Roku’s ads have gotten worse. Nobody can resist the allure of some extra cash.
I have a feeling Apple will cave in at some point, especially with Tim at the helm. Maybe an Apple TV plan with ads will be announced this year or next? That would be a great way to raise the ad-free plan to $12.99 or $14.99 while introducing the new ad-supported $9.99 plan.

Fuchsia isn’t more than a side project for Google, keeping some of their engineers happy. It won’t turn up in anything anytime soon.

It runs their speakers. But nothing with a GUI, so far.

TV Streamer.
It's Google, they devour personal info like no tomorrow...so which way does the data stream ?

I can't safely make that assumption anymore. Apple TV used to have two advantages. It was clearly faster, and it had no ads.

This device will probably be about as fast, at least for a while. And Apple themselves is lowering the bar on the ads. This device will probably have worse ads, at first. But let's see how much Apple shoots themselves in the foot on that one. This last quarter's services revenue is too powerful. They're going to have to figure out how to top it three months from now.

I'm guessing I'm going to be seeing even more of Messi's face where I don't want it.

The last few years of technological "progress" has pushed me into devising my own systems for content consumption that don't rely on any of these "ecosystems".

It's very easy to disassociate, just a very small learning curve.

It's become a case of either shut up and accept you're going to be harvested while you enjoy the services that all work together as well as they can, or simplify things and use open source.

I get that some people use things like Airplay etc regularly, but there are plenty of ways to implement it on anything you like, as it was reverse engineered some time ago just like Google's cast tech.

I agree completely. They sure are testing the limits lately. I grew up using Linux alongside Windows and now use Apple platforms primarily.

Apple is still the best compromise if one is going to use commercial hardware and software.

I really want Linux to be a true alternative but it’s difficult. And the hardware support is still hard as well. Even on supported hardware, once one is used to the Mac it’s hard to use anything else.

And when it comes to file formats anymore it’s either completely bend over to the full nine inches of the corporate experience, or pirate and deal with that whole world. No good choices anymore there, either. I’ve bought plenty of legal media and they still make it difficult to watch in favor of advertising things at me that I don’t want to see.
