I know people don’t often use hyperbole on the internet. Or have strong opinions about things based on anecdotal evidence. Forgive me.Mistake is a pretty bold word to use. You always have the choice of not buying one. Other platforms give you the same services, including AppleTV+, without local storage and at a cheaper price.
Sometimes basic is better, I see nothing wrong with the Roku UI. I have a roku TV and i think it is great, the adverts are only on the right-hand side and can be easily ignored.Roku’s UI is still basic compared to the rest, I agree. It’s still “app first” instead of “content first.”
That said, the ads on Roku have gotten worse and worse over the past few years. They’re really seeing how far they can push it.
I stopped using Roku because the performance is just bad, frankly. There’s too much jank in the apps. And they don’t have Twitch which I sometimes watch.
Hey, how do you make Chromecast/Google TV show only the apps?
My roku TV is 4 years old and still get updates now and again, the apps are certainly updated, I presume a TV using Google will be the same, and the same with Amazon fire OS. The problem is with TV manufactures like Samsung that use their own OS and system, one reason I would never buy a Samsung TV, also they are overpriced and not as good as people think they are.,You aren’t double paying most os in smart TVs are awful and only get about 2 years of updates. TVs are less expensive now because they are smart. Are you willing to pay twice as much for a dumb tv?
Current rumor is that the next Apple TV streaming box, now with the A16 SoC and full WiFi 7 support, may arrive in November 2024.When next APPLE TV device will be released? any hope this year?
I prefer using Ethernet when I can, that is how my TV is connected, it is about stability, not speed as in theory my Wifi is faster than my Ethernet. It’s about the fact that it’s a solid copper connection vs over the airwaves. It’s not always about raw speed.
It’s a stationary device that needs a constant network connection. Back in my day we put Ethernet ports on things like that.
But this is why they should have the Apple TV Mini with no Ethernet.
Do they not have Ethernet? I actually just double checked while I was typing this and it appears the 4k model is available with it. đź‘€If ethernet became standard on Apple TV, Apple will have to raise the price by at least $20 because Apple.
This Google Streamer is not going to be pulling people away from Apple TV. Go to the Android sites and not many are over the moon with this devices. WiFi 5 and a mediatek chip. This is the correct move. These things don't need large local storage. They do need fast, reliable connectivity. I hope Apple corrects this mistake. The few people who are using it to play Apple Arcade games can buy the more expensive version with more storage. Give everyone Ethernet as standard.
Also now that this is out, Apple needs to reverse judo and come out with the Apple TV Mini that's an HDMI dongle for $49.
Haven’t even used it and I can say that I still think the Apple TV is probably worth the extra $30.
Can alternative apps be installed on this device, like Kodi?
So how long before Google kills off the API used for Chromecast? My bet is within four months, and encouraging all users to switch to the Google TV platform.
The original Chromecast w/ Google TV is 4 years old and Google is continuing to provide software updates even with the new Google TV Streamer release.Anyone that buys this Google device over an Apple Tv is a fool, the way Google drops things I give this thing about 3 years and then google gets bored with it
I have a feeling Apple will cave in at some point, especially with Tim at the helm. Maybe an Apple TV plan with ads will be announced this year or next? That would be a great way to raise the ad-free plan to $12.99 or $14.99 while introducing the new ad-supported $9.99 plan.Yeah. Let’s hope Apple doesn’t cave like everyone else has. Even Roku’s ads have gotten worse. Nobody can resist the allure of some extra cash.
Fuchsia isn’t more than a side project for Google, keeping some of their engineers happy. It won’t turn up in anything anytime soon.
Oh, I had missed that. But I think it’s the opposite, it’s on the Nest Hubs, but not on their speakers. (It’s the devices with version 18.x here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7365257.)It runs their speakers. But nothing with a GUI, so far.
I can't safely make that assumption anymore. Apple TV used to have two advantages. It was clearly faster, and it had no ads.
This device will probably be about as fast, at least for a while. And Apple themselves is lowering the bar on the ads. This device will probably have worse ads, at first. But let's see how much Apple shoots themselves in the foot on that one. This last quarter's services revenue is too powerful. They're going to have to figure out how to top it three months from now.
I'm guessing I'm going to be seeing even more of Messi's face where I don't want it.

I agree completely. They sure are testing the limits lately. I grew up using Linux alongside Windows and now use Apple platforms primarily. The last few years of technological "progress" has pushed me into devising my own systems for content consumption that don't rely on any of these "ecosystems".
It's very easy to disassociate, just a very small learning curve.
It's become a case of either shut up and accept you're going to be harvested while you enjoy the services that all work together as well as they can, or simplify things and use open source.
I get that some people use things like Airplay etc regularly, but there are plenty of ways to implement it on anything you like, as it was reverse engineered some time ago just like Google's cast tech.
