Apple could do so much more and innovate so much faster as it wasn't so focused on profits alone. I hate to see competitors are overhauling Apple left and right. In the days of the iPod competitors tried as well. But then Apple innovated and gave their customers a good reason to choose ipod. These days Apple lost its focus and doesn't put effort in delivering the best. As with their keynotes lately, they're full of "jokes" and send the message they don't take themselves seriously anymore.

Compare Chromecast with Apple TV. 4 chromecasts for one Apple TV. You should think Apple TV should be 4 times better (NOT).

Well, Apple TV is alot better, the App Store on it is amazing, the game controller support, and Airplay is light years ahead of "Chrome Casting".

How is this the perfect cable replacement?

DirecTV now is the best of these services currently and offers WAY more channels for the same price

I like Google better and support them a lot, so for me personally it might be worth the price. Also, I meant these streaming services as a whole. Anything that kills those awful and problematic boxes are well worth the price in my book.

"YouTube TV features include cloud DVR options with unlimited storage space"

why not just record all channels for me and let me watch whatever?
That would provide the service that offers like CBS All Access currently deliver but for a whole bunch of channels together. The $35/month might not be enough to get those things from TV companies.

Just because you like "like Google better" and you support them doesn't mean this is worth the price, hopefully even for you, it doesn't have barely any content compared to the other services.

Licensing issues. Lawsuits over VHS taping, then DVR and then cloud DVR has shown it to be legal without additional money being paid to the networks. Converting it into a streaming service is not automatically legal, and an additional agreement and money would be necessary to get the rights.

To me TV is dead. We still have optical TV services with a PVR because they practically give it to us ($10/mo bundled) because we keep threatening to cancel. They probably need as many subscribers as they can get to justify it to the networks.

There is a small number of shows I watch, but never live. These days I find even having to fast forward through the commercials a pain. We have chosen specific channels so we can record our favourite TV shows, but then the line-up changes and you have to chase your favourite shows to a different channel and set up the recording again.

The cable providers seem to be desperate because they keep holding on to a system most people don't want anymore.

... For me, it'd have to be commercial free or it's a no go.

Will people please give up on this 'commercial free' delusion? Subscription-only can never pay the production costs for everything. Look at apps and their migration from pay to ad-based.
Commercials will be with us until the zombie apocalypse.

To me this is a logical move, particularly when paired with Google Fiber. I would like to see Google expand its fiber service across the US a little more aggressively then it can bundle this offering to really put the cable companies in the dirt!

My goodness. Never canceling my $35 DTVNow sub...actually, $40 ($5 HBO).

Deal of the century along with my $7.99 grandfathered GPMAA. And two lifetime subs to SiriusXM purchased 10 years ago :)

See Netflix. Hulu. Apple is premium. This isn't just delusional it's essential for apple. They need it to drive hardware sales or it's not worthwhile. That's how good it needs to be.

Will this be available the UK? Will i need a TV license to view it?

What do you think? What do you reaaaally think

They really shouldnt pair their paid services to their YouTube brand. People think Youtube = free. Its in everyones mindset from years of being like that

You can either be a leader and be first to market, be a fast follower, be the best, or not be in a market at all. I fear Apple is the latter.

So I wonder if Apple just decided not to go after this market or if Eddy Cue is just a crappy negotiator and couldn't get a deal done.

I'll go with the latter. I think Eddy makes himself out to be a great negotiator but isn't really. Or maybe he was but media companies realize now that Apple is only one of many suitors for their media. Why pigeon hole yourself to Apple and only apple devices on top of the probably lowest paying bidder? That makes absolutely no sense. I'd go with DirectTV, Sling, Netflix, etc... really anyone who is multi platform. They'll get more because they reach more on ecosystem agnostic platforms.

This sounds like exactly the kind of deal Apple tried to make but failed to. What gives? Data collection? Apple wanted to break down individual channels for sale?

Ha, I have the same DTVNow grandfathered at $35 & SiriusXM lifetime several years ago.

I don't know what GPMAA is.

But I wonder how many streams Google is going to allow, and if they will have stand alone apps.

I'm waiting to see what Hulu does this year, competition is good.

And you would want to watch all the daily crap and not just the shows you like and whenever you like on demand because...?

Thats like paying 20$ to listen to radio stations instead of 10$ for every song you want at your disposal at any time through Spotify and the like

Exactly.

We've finally got "TV over the internet"... but it's literally just TV over the internet.

They're mimicking the idea of broadcasting a TV show over the airwaves at a certain scheduled time. And you have to be home to watch it at that certain time.

Yes... DVR helps some... but it's basically TV as it always was.

This is still linear television... the only difference is it's delivered over the internet and not over the airwaves or a copper wire. Progress?

YouTubeTV is $35 a month to get the four major networks and 30 cable channels...

So how much would a similar channel package be directly from the cable company? From the company who is likely your internet provider already?

This is simply buying your channels from someone else.

And these are live channels... not on-demand.

I thought we would be at the point where we could watch anything anywhere at any time.

But no... we're still getting linear scheduled television. Yippee.
