No dual camera!. The back looks ugly.
.. and still scores better in DxOmark rating. Sometimes I have a feeling that many people think that more is better .. like a race for MPx, RAM, resolution etc. I'm not an Android user though. Design is subjective, I don't like this year's IP8 design too - looking still the same is super boring.

1000 on a MacBook to run apple apps? which most IOS apps are not avail there. most windows based stuff is not on MacOS either. since they both use intel hardware windows should be easily dual booted

macOS has a range of super-powerful desktop software such as Adobe Creative Suite. Chrome has none of it.

Trying to sell a $1600 Chromebook with 16GB RAM and an i7 processor is laughable. There is literally not a single piece of software that will even begin to come close to taking advantage of all that computer.

As explained on daringfireball a couple weeks ago, the DXOmark rating system is deeply flawed. So I would probably discount the score until real world tests come through.

I don't believe scores much either, but as a Pixel owner and my friend has iPhone 7, the Pixel camera smokes the iPhone's camera hands down. We did a few comparisons in low light, daylight etc. My friend ended up dumping the iPhone 7 and getting a Pixel too! haha. Now the Pixel 2 DxOMark is 9 points better than the Pixel 1. The Pixel camera definitely did not disappoint so I have no reason to believe the Pixel 2 camera won't be absolutely amazing.

The camera has OIS, but I don't think it's an ideal for zoom perspective.

Imagine trying to sell a phone for $1424, which is what the 256Gb iPhone X costs here. That’s beyond laughable.

DxO Labs changed their scoring system so you can't compare 2016 results with 2017 results. You have to wait for DxO Labs to retest the original Pixel to compare against Pixel 2.

iPhones don't come with real Android. Did you read in recent news that Google Assistant's IQ is twice that of Siri? Do you want a smart phone or a dumb one?
Both are dumb without their cloud back end. Part of the IQ of Google Assistant comes from how much data it captures from it’s users. Despite being a fan of Google, the TOS, and other disclosures of what data they gather is starting to become alarming. I am nowhere near adorning my wardrobe with tinfoil (I just ordered a Pixel 2), but I am a touch concerned with what info I offer up to google.

Honestly, what Apple can do with Siri given it’s data privacy policy, is quite impressive.

This is by far the least interesting device released this year.

No headphone jack, great. More expensive Bluetooth headphones, brilliant. Looks like a boring slab with limited/weird color combinations, how marvelous. Oh and look at those mediocre specs and ugly camera setup! Bah!

Yeah, no thank you.

That's one of the ugliest shades of blue I've ever seen, though...

Now THAT'S a nice blue:

I would love an iPhone that size (and thickness), with an AMOLED screen, and edge to edge glass, with at least the speed and battery life of the iPhone 7. That would be one killer device!

I feel the opposite. I haven’t been enthused over last year’s Pixels and didn’t expect to like this year’s. I’ve just been waiting for the Mate 10.

However I like the new XL, I think it’s a strong contender to be my next phone. If Huawei messes up and puts LCD instead of OLED on the 10 Pro, I’ll probably get the Pixel.

It’s funny and eerie how Google and Amazon did copy HomePod’s fabric skin style in their speakers and how Google meticulously matched prices for earbuds and its Max speaker with Apple’s ones. They take Apple way too serious (which is a good thing, but such dumb copying from such companies is just plain stupid and kills the diversity).

Echo had better design right from the start, although Google Home is better looking now than it was before.

"Makes sense"....................................................................."can't they be original?"
"Cool!"---------------------------------------------------------------"Gee, they even copy the price"
i didn't really say anything about copying but notice how you brought that up?

If you're implying that Apple is the leader here, I'll remind you they have no actual home speaker product on the market, just an announcement.

The leader used to be Amazon, but I think Google caught up with them.

The removal of the headphone jack is deplorable, I agree. At least they put in aptX and LDAC to sweeten the pill.

Oh yeah I had forgotten about Amazon - the true leaders in the connected speaker.

Apple’s HomePod, yes announced before Google not sure why it’s taking so long to ship - yet Googles doesn’t until December 2017 as well. Right now Google only has their home mesh wifi or wait the Mini is shipping forgot about that.

Thanks for the clarity. AptX is in a lot of Android smartphones in the last 2-3yrs now. LDAC is a great addition.

If concerned, why do you keep being the “product”?

I think the problem is that these companies are fragmenting android too much, just look at Bixby. I don't think Google would be doing this is its partners were not trying to undermine Google. Microsoft had to do the same thing when they introduced the surface, someone has to provide the leadership and vision or else the competition will destroy them. The status quo has changed and Google is providing much-needed leadership to the Android ecosystem.
The question though is whether Samsung thinks they need Google's leadership...

Fragmentation is kind of the point of Android from the user and OEM perspective. That's the "free and open" alternative to the iOS "walled garden". The complaints about iOS usually center on Apple having too much control, and the benefits of Android are usually that it can be modified much more easily.

Of course, the reason Google even bothered with Android was because they were concerned that as usage patterns shifted from desktop to mobile, they'd lose their dominance in search and access to the kinds of user data while also getting cut off from an important ad channel to users with mobile ads.

And that's where the tension is. OEMs want that data for themselves and they want that revenue for themselves. AI assistants are a critical area of innovation these days, and being forced to make Google the face of your brand is going to be frustrating. But as they break ranks, Google's whole Android business model is threatened.

A house divided. It'll be interesting to see if it stands...

I have to check out x and pixel xl. I'm not in rush to buy one, but I do need one as my phone is barely surviving (6 plus).
However, I don't want to rush to buy anything and I'm heavily embedded to apple's eco-system as I have mac pro and
ipad pro 12.9. If Pixel xl is actually delivering what they announce, I would get it. It's the translator earbuds that made me push to their side. Although, pixel xl is ip67 and no wireless charging, I still can overlook it, but I just want to see the overall aspect of the device. It might be the first device that may break my eco-system. I noticed google is doing their eco-system like as well.

The translator earbuds? This would imply you don’t need your phone turned on or a internet connection. Good luck with that.

Pixel 2 removes headphone jack
"Makes sense"

Google Pixel Buds $159
"Cool!"

iPhone Rose Gold
"Ugly AF"
Pixel 2 Kinda Blue
"Ohhhh nice!"

You forgot to mention one thing: the /s tag at the end of your rant ;)

A little PSA for all the Apple-"hater" haters: It's called tough love.

If you're a good parent, you're going to care about what your own children are up to - and reprimand them accordingly - much more than you will the neighbors' kids. You are much more concerned about your own children doing the right thing. And while I do not advocate that same type or degree of feeling toward any corporation, the fact of the matter is that many of us have been Apple consumers for 15 to 20+ years. Sticking with the company through the ups and downs of the 80s, 90s and 00s, some people can be very opinionated, and rightly so, about perceived changes within the company and its products. Does that mean that most of us who speak ill of Apple at any moment are universally against the company? No - quite the opposite.

You don't argue with most of your colleagues or casual acquaintances, because you probably aren't as concerned about them as you are with your own family. That's the paradox of life: we argue, debate and lash out toward those people and things we feel most passionately about.

So let's stop it with the showboating and the straw-man put-downs, alright? Thanks. ;)

I have to imagine that many people mocking the products, pricing, etc in this thread didn't watch the very effective keynote nor do they understand what the devices are capable of. But sure - make the easy jokes.

It’s a keynote. It’s meant to make the products look great. If you get past the hyperbole, it’s Google basically saying, we want to be Apple. It’s natural for people to deride copycats. It’s also natural for people to root for the underdog.

If the media thinks iPhone 8 is an unremarkable upgrade, it’d be interesting to see what they say about the Pixel2 which is as uninspiring on the outside as it is on the inside, coupled with Oreo, quite possibly the most boring Android update to date. Yet, I’m betting the media will give it glowing reviews simply because it’s from Google, an underdog and media favorite, because they depend on them for traffic and they’re both in the business of data mining and selling ads.

Not sure what you're trying to say. I care about higher bit rates because I have headphones good enough to tell the difference on them (i.e. between default Bluetooth SBC and a better solution). So if you remove the headphone jack but give me a higher quality Bluetooth codec, I'll be happy enough.

I don't care a jot about the AirPods, I think it's a silly product that makes people look silly.

you were being a bit confusing. so you're not talking about pixel buds vs airpods, you're just talking about codecs in general. in that case, that's a whole another conversation, but i already now you're in the minority here because most people don't really care for lossless audio, so I already know how that conversation would go.

Such a fun event to watch. Really impressive showing today by Google.

I already see a couple of people complaining about the lack of a dual camera? Guys, the camera has a DxOmark rating of 98. Come on now.

The Google Assistant features showed today are insane.

The dual camera thing on the iPhone is a scam anyway since it's only purpose on the second camera is a joke. 2X xoom on the 2nd camera is pretty pointless and i was really hoping they'd at least double it to 4X with this yr's model. There's not even stabilization on the 2nd camera. You have to buy the iPhone X to get that.

My whimsical musings about extremists on both sides was in no way intended as an attempt to characterize you as being in one of those groups, but merely an extension of what I thought was an amusing observation by you, hence my upvote of your post

hard to tell the tone of these replies over the web, you know?

hard to see what you're talking about since I'm not a parent and I do argue with my family and casual acquaintances from time to time.
