I thought the stuff they announced was pretty nice. And Assistant is so much better than what Apple offers in Siri. I have yet to order a new iPhone (waiting on the X) but this is tempting. The photos last years Pixels took were great and in my opinion a little better than what Apple offers. If the Pixel 2 is even better I may actually give Google my business this year.

1000 on a MacBook to run apple apps? which most IOS apps are not avail there. most windows based stuff is not on MacOS either. since they both use intel hardware windows should be easily dual booted

Not sure what you are saying?

The Chromebook can only run google apps, but the Macbook can run Mac OS X apps and be dual booted to run Windows or Linux and run everything.

Watching the hands on of the Pixel 2 makes me jealous. Never thought I would see the day where android is just overall cleaner and more polished then iOS. You can take you’re A11 “bionic” benchmarks and blow em’ out your arse.

I'm comparing them as they are the value-added thing to sweeten the removal of the headphone jack. Apple added their proprietary W1 chip for better pairing. Google added aptX and LDAC. While I prefer my phone to have the jack, I'd be much more inclined to live with the latter.

Do you know what codecs apple can play through bluetooth? THAT is what you need to compare. They could be the same.

It can run any apps the play store has....

yes it does - it needs the phone to do the interpreting and it needs the phones speaker to voice the response. These aren't a star trek com badge that can do the interpreting and voicing - all they're doing is relaying what your voicing to the phone and its doing the interpreting and voicing - same as iphone.

Again, you're not understanding the difference. The difference is that Google is doing this in your ear along with their phone IN REALTIME.

It's just like their Google Translate app in realtime mode where you can just set your phone down and Google Translate will translate both your langauge and the other in realtime. That's how it works. Siri isn't even remotely close to this yet.

You make a big deal out of this, but there's hardly anything here.

The first link (gizomdo) is about Google merging the accounts across services. It wasn't really that unexpected or particularly evil.

The others are about a team from DoubleClick doing what they shouldn't. DoubleClick was a Google acquisition but it takes time for acquisitions to be integrated. What they did was not ok, but they were not operating under Google's policies and were dealt with.

I'm also concerned with my privacy, I watch this stuff all the time, there's nothing to warrant excessive worrying regarding Google. Also, if you have an iPhone, you're probably exposed to the same amount, unless you're doing something extraordinary.

yes they did - here is how it works: You hold your finger down on your ear and say "help me speak French,” and speak a phrase. When you lift your finger, the Translate app speaks and displays your translation. Then the person you're speaking to holds a button down on your phone and says their reply, which you hear in your ear. Let's be honest - this has nothing to do with the earbuds.

Okay..so that person did hold it. However, the point was it translated and spoke for that person.

Pixel 2 XL Black/128 ordered. I got a shipping estimate of Oct 25.

I’m really excited. Returned an 8+ last week for earpiece clicking issues that may or may not be resolved. Will keep my 7 for awhile and dual wield for a bit once the Pixel arrives.

I use AdWords for my business and Google already has me by the short and curlies re: privacy I assume. Give me Waze and Google Maps by default with Android Auto, something Apple will never allow with CarPlay. Also Android Pay works with both of my banks, Apple Pay only works with one. I have a total of 48 photos on my 7, don’t really care about camera honestly. I don’t want to be forced into Face ID, at least give people options, Apple.

I don’t keep phones longer than 2 years anyway so I’m fine with 2 years of Android support. Longest I’ve gone with an Android has been 4 months or so, and I always return to Apple. We shall see. Can’t wait for new hotness to get here.

To the best of my knowledge Apple has no aptX or LDAC support. I don't know if their W1 chip supports higher audio bitrate (I doubt it), but it's proprietary anyway so I'm not interested.

I'm not talking about a specific product but the support of higher audio bitrate standards. Standard Bluetooth audio is pretty dire, I can immediately tell the difference if I use my own headphones in wired or wireless mode.

So yes I'll take aptX and LDAC any day over W1, since the former gives me a wealth of choice where it comes to choosing headphones. To illustrate it, I already have headphones with aptX support, but no headphones with W1 support.

I'm sorry I don't care about your pairing problems, I have no pairing problems since I use them with only one device. In any case, if I wanted improvements here I'd look to Bluetooth 5 instead of painting myself into corners by purchasing proprietary Apple solutions.

what’s the point of higher bit rates if the earbuds can’t even produce quality sound?

that’s like upgrading your blu ray player to a 4k blu ray player even though you only have a 1080p screen

airpods work with all bluetooth devices. you can even use airpods with android devices. there’s no vendor lockin when using airpods

Not very good, they had an opportunity
here.

All this has done is given Pixel users a reason to switch to iPhone (or probably more likely, other Android phones).

I don’t think anybody can deny that the inspiration from Apple is apparent in some of the things Google announces today. And it’s not all good, certainly not what their users want.

One thing I would have liked to see is an AirPods competitor at a lower price, these ones aren’t going to be as successful. Another wasted opportunity.

Google’s unlimited free photo storage and excellent services that outshine iCloud by a mile along with their far better and more useful assistant notwithstanding of course...

Congradulation. Nothing wrong with iphone 8 plus or any apple, but curious as to why you switched like that?

Not sure what you're trying to say. I care about higher bit rates because I have headphones good enough to tell the difference on them (i.e. between default Bluetooth SBC and a better solution). So if you remove the headphone jack but give me a higher quality Bluetooth codec, I'll be happy enough.

I don't care a jot about the AirPods, I think it's a silly product that makes people look silly.

A lot of good stuff announced here, looks like Apple and Google really will be battling for the consumers during the AR & assistant race.

I'm saying the new pixel book will have great intel hardware and can prob now run windows just fine. Mac OS is basically the same. but with Pixelbook most likely everything on the google play will be able to run on the pixel book... you can not say the same thing for apple. not everything on IOS runs on Mac OS

This phone does not look like a premium device and therefore it's overpriced. It looks like the cheap Nexus phone that they used to make.

If the Pixel 2 had the same bezels as the XL, making it smaller than the iPhone 8, then I would be buying one. But, it's actually bigger than an iPhone X so I'm out.

I must be the only person in the world that likes that "kinda blue" color.

you mean like this iphone app:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/translate-voice-free/id539941258?mt=8

not earth shattering. Apple has all the tools to do this - and, the point of my argument is, it really has nothing to do with the headphones - you don't need them to do something like this and it doesn't make it that much easier.

I tried the original Pixel and it had issues with Bluetooth audio with Maps and Waze over my car audio. Since that time Android Auto interface now supports Waze natively which I use all the time. Other than that I loved the Pixel. Hands down the best Android experience I’ve ever had. I like the wide variety of audio codecs supported by the Pixel 2.

I just want to try something new and vote with my wallet. The XL is smaller than the 8+ and has a larger screen with smaller bezels. After using the 8+ I can’t go back to a smaller screen, lol. I don’t know if I’ll like the 18:9 ratio, that’s my only unknown.

From what I’ve seen the iPhone 10 just doesn’t excite me. If I end up not liking the Pixel I will probably get the 8+ again.

It's a completely different thing. And Apple offers nothing like it.

Plus, don't you think that some app made by Intellectual Flame Co., Ltd. - also makers of Flashlight - is not quite up there with Google's machine learning translation which has gotten pretty amazing? Not sure if you're used it recently, I use English - German and often it's stunningly good.

I agree with you. Vote with your wallet. You know what? I agree that you should try new stuff? Are you heavily embedded in apple eco system?

I’d likely never switch from iOS, but I was interested to see what Google came out with here. Overall, not too impressed with the specs, not very good water resistance, no wireless charging, a bunch of Apple copied camera tricks (although the camera looks pretty good), a camera bump, no headphone jack, huge chins and bezels, and off the shelf parts like everyone else. I guess I don’t see what the sell is for people that prefer Android. I mean, isn’t a lot of this stuff what people have disliked about iPhones? Just sorta worse? I think Google is making the right call with mimicking Apple, but I just expected more.

It might be if you order it separately, but the phone comes with one, just like Apple.
The tech press would be losing its collective mind if Apple released a headphone jack dongle for $26.
