Google Unveils Pixel Phone, Smart Home Hub, and More at AI-Focused Event

What I don't get is – every Google and anti-Apple site slammed the iPhone 7's aesthetics, and yet these same people are going to masturbate over the Pixel for looking exactly the same.

Are they? Post links when they do so we can see if you're correct.

This is not a dig at you but the quote itself is the most overused bunch of crap. Competition is good when there IS competition. Does anyone look at this Google phone and think "wow Apple must be scared"? If anything, atleast Samsung tries new things and attempts to push the market forward. This phone isnt making Apple do anything different.

I disagree. This phone specifically is not much concern to Apple. But Google's whole ecosystem is surely a huge concern, and that was the main focus of today's presentation. Ecosystems are what sell more stuff. If Google can convince an Apple user to buy a Chromecast, and then perhaps try the Google Home, and then suddenly buying a Google phone isn't so far fetched.

Also, I think Google's ads with the "Storage Full" error while taking photos on the iPhone resonates really well. Even if you haven't seen that error message since your trusty old iPhone 4, it still resonates and is very relateable. As mentioned above, it gets people to think about using Google's ecosystem. It starts with using Google Photos on iOS to store all your photos, because it's free and the resolution is good enough, or the high-resolution storage plan is cheaper than iCloud. Then why not buy a Chromecast so the photos can be enjoyed on the TV, plus it works with most streaming apps on iOS too. Then might as well buy a Google Home as my next speaker, and so on...

I think Apple has to address the photos storage full ad campaign and they have to do it ASAP.

It's certainly not for me and yes that's largely because I've used Android extensively and I just don't like it, we all have our preferences.

But, it's not a bad showing, sure at the moment the hardware isn't really anything to differentiate itself from the crowd. But they clearly have started to nail down a roadmap for the future and it should ultimately prove to be good competition for Apple, which should be good for us in the long run.

One thing I did like, at least Google made a good decision and chose to ignore the Apple mantra of thinner is better. The tapered design allowed them to avoid a camera hump and I like that. Well done G. Though I'm not particularly fond of the Touch ID, errr I mean finger print detector on the back and the two-tone, it kind of spoils what would have been a nice clean layout for me.

Still, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what they come up with a year or two down the line. I very much doubt they'd be able to lure me over to that side of the fence, but y'know, never say never. I've tried before, I may yet try again.

Reminds me of something...

Easy to make that dig but for a first Android phone and a first Android OS iteration it was a solid phone with loads of productivity features. I was requisitioned one for work because we have projects that require use of a FIPS 140-2 compliant device with a hardened kernel. Sadly, it came far too late during BBRY's slide to irrelelvance.

Wow, from a distance you could easily confuse this with the iphone 6. even the antenna line is present at the bottom. However, when I looked at it, my initial reaction is that it is somehow not as good looking as the the iphone. I don't know what it is since its almost the same, but there is something that I just don't like. And now with the 7 in my hand, fogetaboutit.

Looks like a huge improvement from the Nexus 6P. I'm very impressed and happy to see Google finally stepping up their smartphone game. If they keep this up, they may very well dominate the android market soon. I always felt as if Google's rightful place would be at the top of the android "food chain". This phone looks gorgeous! I would get it if I weren't so pleased with my iPhone 7 plus.

No offence taken! I am not talking about the phone, as it is quite uninteresting, except from a security POV, as Android updates will likely come fast and regularly to this phone.

I am talking more about Google Assistant, and Google Home, because this is the first steps into a *very* large business that Apple is also very much interested in - Cook has said as much up front.

Nice. Props for the displays which surpass anything on an iDevice. That pixel density is vital to a quality VR experience, and I like that google makes the VR kit affordable.

I'm bummed there was no tablet announcement. Google needs another 7-8" tablet to compete with the iPad Mini.

I would feel so embarrassed pulling out a Google phone out of my pocket in public. I dunno, pulling out an iPhone just feels so cool. Hard to explain this psychological phenomenon.
Hmm. I'm very happy with the Apple products that I have, including my iPhone, but I really couldn't care less what other people think of my iPhone when I take it out of my pocket - I don't derive my sense of self worth from what prestige may or may not be attached to the products I choose to use.

Unlimited high-res image storage is pretty awesome. C'mon Apple, time to compete!

-.- Of course google can offer that to a phone that will only have in the 10s of millions in operation. The data for 100s of millions of iOS devices is much more substantial. That's like going to a cafe and getting a free coffee in a town of 2000 people and expecting the same treatment at a Starbucks in Manhattan. You just wouldn't expect that.

If I was interested in an Android phone, this is the one I'd get (if only because there won't be any bloatware and it will get software updates quickly). The design looks like a cross between iPhone 5 and 6 to me (which could be a good thing; the straight edges will probably make it more comfortable to hold than the iPhone 6/7). Fast charging is great and long overdue on Apple's side.

Only selling this through Google's online store and Verizon is an interesting choice though. Without real retail presence, it will not be able to compete with Samsung et al. on sales. Perhaps this is intentional to avoid alienating the other Android OEMs.

I think the "jab" was in context with their promo video - everything being new... except the headphone jack. I think it worked in context as opposed to Samsung's attempt at a zinger.
That is true, but look at the other cheap shot. "No camera hump" yeah that's easy to achieve on a phone that's 1,5mm thicker than the iPhone! Personally I'd prefer my iPhone to be a little thicker in order to get rid of the hump, but the jab from google just wasn't justified.

I'm not generally one to engage in fanboyism and my household is a platform agnostic one (both Windows and macOS, both iOS and Android), but Pixel is worlds away from the first-tier quality that I expect from Google's in-house flagship. So many have been giving Apple rubbish for standing still (which they absolutely have been) but at least neither the 6S or the 7 were demonstrable steps backward.
