The caption underneath the photo in that article says everything that needs said:

"Android phones — primarily made by HTC, Motorola and Samsung — are now outselling the iPhone, and will continue to grab market share. Here is the Google Nexus One, made by HTC, next to Apple's iPhone 4."

Android, an OS by Google, is featured on phones made by at least three major manufacturers. HTC, Motorola, and Samsung.

iOS, an OS made by Apple, is featured on one phone made by one manufacturer. Apple.

Android is not outselling iPhone. An OS cannot outsell a physical device.

However, with multiple manufacturers vs single manufacturer (never mind multiple carriers vs single carrier, which we could use as further proof), it's to be expected.

However, God forbid the media actually report things factually, but that's their job at the end of the day; sensationalism sells.

But, I would think that when people buy a cellphone, they're buying into the OS. They may be picking iOS market vs Android market. And, are these Android phones really that much different than each other? They all seem to me to be offering the same old thing. In fact, they really just seem like one phone. As more Android models are released, they look even more similar too.

I guess you can break it down this way:

If you want to know which cell phone maufacturer is winning: Apple (heck, I don't even know though. HTC probably sells more units than Apple).

Which OS: Android

Which carrier: probably Verizon at this point.

Is it true?

Well, ask Apple and Google how much money they are making off their respective mobile strategies, and then we'll see who is eating what.

This is a very good question. I really don't know the answer. Google is not making any money from selling Android directly. But, they're probably making a ton from advertising on both platforms.

This bit of news comes as no surprise to me. Most male Fandroids have never seen a grown woman naked. Why do people think they are so adamant about wanting (needing) porn on their mobile devices?

Could be because the average age of an iPhone user is much higher than an Android user. I don't think there are even many 30 year-olds with Android phones. Are they extrapolating the numbers for Android users? And, we need error bars please.

While ranking is important to marketing people, what is most important to the company is how much $$$ they are making from their investment.

And this, we may not know.

Is Google making more than Apple from their "mobile phone" services (including mobile advertising).

Does Apple make more money selling 1 phone than HTC does selling all of their phones?

I'm not sure.

such a stupid comparison. how are they going to line up 1 phone vs 3+...
android platform is much more widespread and the iphone os is only on 2 phones sold right now. lol. I love how people are trying so hard to make apple look bad while in the end im sure they want an iphone themself. Even my dad who is an engineer working with rf filters always talks about new exclusive phones but when i asked him which he would pick, he said the iphone. Reason: (he doesn't even know why. just because its apple)

I agree, while contract pricing obscures it, pricing would say apple is doing pretty well, but then the advertising side of it comes in. Take a lot more study than I am going to do, but I don't see the stock price of google or apple hurting too bad right now.

I'd love to see the iPhone on different carriers already. Then we'd really see which is more popular.

The iPhone already is on different carriers. It's sold in other countries, so therefore it's on other carriers. ATT is the only GSM network in the US.

I'm pretty sure the official story on the CDMA chips is to build out the 3gs iphones for China's network.

This doesn't mean the iPhone won't come to Verizon. It just means that they at least have plans to manufacture hardware that COULD operate on Verizon. Whether or not it WILL, is a completely different story and certainly isn't a "given".

ahh very true :( oh well i can dream

The only people who care are the idiot fanboys who belong to the "my phone sold more than your phone" crowd. Oh, and developers. Android and iPhone will both dominate the market, and the market is big enough for both players to continue.

I'm pleased both as an Apple stockholder and as an Android user.

+1! well said sir!

Love your passion, but we need to know you own stock? Doesn't make ya special, we all can buy the stock....just sayin'

But great point, it's the fanboys who care. Me I dont care what device you use so long as you like it, heck just have fun with your phones people!

Yup! I was waiting for it...I was an AT&T customer since iPhone launch and honestly service in the south is spotty at best... Im excited to hear that Apple is ordering CMDA chips (ref: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/988508/) in order to support Verizon's network.
-But-

I also heard that the iPhone 3gs? possibly ( i dont think the iPhone 4's hardware is capable) is coming to T-Mobile....(ref:https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/988508/)

VERY excited about that because i am currently a T-Mobile Customer.:apple:

And there are probably many people like you. The irony, of course, is that when you switch to Verizon, the number of iPhone users will not grow a bit.

Plus some Droid's are Buy One Get One FREE!

Can you imagine the sales if iPhone were that way?!?!?

We can imagine something better, since free iPhones with a long contract are available in other countries, and have provided a nice boost in sales.

And AT&T offers early upgrades which can be the equivalent of half-price for one, and certainly boosted iPhone sales.

BOGO deals require two people to commit for two years in return for half-price each.

Ummm ...... Please pass me some more mash tattors and iPhone4 please. And quit giving scraps to that pathetic dog you call Android!

I'm not sure.

Maybe, but Google's profit will also come over the life of the device, Apple's is front loaded.

I doubt the profit margin on an HTC phone is much different than the iPhone. Apple also gets some revenue monthly from AT&T for each iPhone subscriber. Not sure if any other phone company gets that.

I love to have the best phone on earth.. not be as popular.. because if everyone had it.. wouldn't be much of bragging rights anyway. .. plus i dont like things that everyone else has.

if iphone controlled like 50 % of market share.. i wo uldn't want one.

The only valid comparisons are Android vs. iOS (all devices) or iPhone vs. [pick one android handset of your choice]. If you're going to talk about "Android", then you have to also count all iOS devices - iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch, and iPad. If you are going to compare iPhone 4 sales figures, then your comparison would be to an individual handset from another manufacturer.

In either example, Apple clearly wins. You can't compare "Android" sales to iPhone. One is an operating system, one is a phone.

We compare Windows to Mac all the time...

Android = OS - These run on many devices (e.g. HTC, Motorola and Samsung, etc)

iPhone = phone - There is only one phone that the iOS4 software runs on and that's the iPhone.

Comparing Operating Systems versus phones is a dumb comparison that marketing weenies like to do.

Hey genius, they are comparing only phones. Otherwise we'd see stuff like book readers and TVs and set top boxes thrown in the mix for android.
