Very true, especially on that last item. Power/water usage can and has been used to develop spurious drug warrants against people and result in no-knock raids, sometimes resulting in severe injury, loss of life, and confiscation of property, all at no risk to the "professionals" involved.
And there you have it. Seems like this discussion is moot then given that in order to even have it it's going against it all by using the Internet and electricity.

There are ways around everything, or nearly so. It depends on how hard you want to work at it. The common person leaves their entire life up for grabs. I don't.

You are either on the Internet or you are not. If we are having this discussion then we are on it.

Yes we are. Is there a point in there, somewhere, or are you just Capt. Obvious?

Just pointing out the moot nature of this aspect of the discussion. Seems like we agree and can move on.

Most of this forum runs that way. Any thread that mentions Google inevitably becomes Apple vs. Google. Who cares? Someone might win, no one has to, one probably will. We end up with generally cooler products that range from useless to life-changing, and then it starts all over again. Its moot.:)

Is there a way of hooking up Photos on OS X as the interface for this?

Love native apps, but also would love unlimited photo storage. Can't tell which of these loves will win, but if theres a way of pointing Photos towards Google, that'd be great. :)

has anyone found a solution for this? the google mac backup doesn't let you open the contents of the photos app

We're having some discussion now on the Apple forums about the caveats. Specifically, the OS X app is confusing insofar as it does not directly support the Apple Photos app Library. And I've also found that shared 1080p videos on mobile appear to be highly compressed 480p-only.

OMG! Now let's look at Apple's iCloud terms and agreement:

Wait a second. Looks familiar.

It helps if you leave some of your cherry-picked quotes in the correct context:

Again, let's look at Apple's similar policy:

A few years back I used to post privacy policy quotes that had people up in arms about how terrible they were. That's because they assumed the quotes were from Google. But they were from Apple. Most people have never bothered to read Apple's policies, and would be surprised at what they allow.

I think this should by default be the first post in any thread about any Google related product/system, just so as it might deter a few of the usual diatribes!

Agree 100%. As KDarling said, it's as if people are out to persuade others not to use a specific product just because they don't like it. The FUD and rubbish spread by some people is astounding.

Would be great if people could just stick to the topic and it's pros/cons but that's just wishful thinking.

You are the one doing it wrong, its a fact that (in its unlimited/free mode) it recompress the pictures and videos.

You are right. I was using the Original setting for up to 15GB of space.

I still like it, though will keep SmugMug as my main photo cloud storage.

iCloud is not even in the running, IMO.

I'm guessing next time you see the several thousands of replies from FUD Google parade on this site, you'll be the first in line to stop it? Seems only fair. Cause truth is your only goal isn't it... Or is "truth" only relevant when it fits your own views. We'll see on the next Apple news thread.

BTW, Not liking Google because of their business model, which lets face it they don't shy from, is perfectly legitimate.

Making sure that people understand the exact privacy implications of their choices in services and software (not just from Google, but from all online service providers), is also legitimate.

Is anyone really going to tell me their really getting anything for free. Everything has a cost. As long a people know exactly what their getting into, I don't care if they get screwed by Google or Facebook for their service. They asked for it after all.

I'll only really care if this has an affect on Apple's viability, or restrict alternative platform choices in a big way. That's why I want MS to survive and even grow in the mobile space to provide a potential alternative to Google. Not sure MS will offer better privacy options, but in a competitive sphere, there is always a possibility that one or more will do so to differentiate themselves.

Then take that argument to a different thread. This is about Google Photos app on IOS and the web - What has the Google business model got to do with how this app works on IOS?

Take the FUD elsewhere to it's own thread and discuss it as much as you want. Let's keep the threads on-topic and relevant and maybe we'll gain something here.

As a footnote. I am in both camps. I have and use products from both Google and Apple daily but the difference is that I keep my eyes and mind open and I don't spread FUD.

having a few problems with it and I'm confused as to whether my pics are being uploaded as original with 15 gigs or unlimited space with the size constraint.

i click on the google photos backup icon on my menu bar, and click preferences it comes up with the preferences.

it has Photo Size
high quality (free unlimited storage) which is selected.
original (14.1gb storage left) which isn't selected.

so pretty obvious i have unlimited space you'd think?

except i click on the icon then 'go to google photos'

it brings up photos.google.com in safari.

when i click on the the top left button then settings

it has the same two options, but in this, the original (14.1gb storage left) is selected.

now i think that has to be wrong as it should have uploaded nearly 20 gigs of pictures so i wouldnt have any space left but why dont the two sets of settings agree?

and do i have to create albums manually? id have thought it was obvious to the uploader app that my pics are all in folders so why didnt it create albums based on that?

If it's an operating system folder, as opposed to a Photos app folder, then it won't work. The iCloud Photo Library syncing is for photos and videos in the Photos app, and it will preserve the folder and album structure which will be synced across all your devices. Copying operating system folders to iCloud Drive will not sync them with your devices.

Which is what I said originally. And this is why I prefer Google's photos. It ... just ... works.

has anyone found a solution for this? the google mac backup doesn't let you open the contents of the photos app

I was able to do it by using a tag to point the Masters folder inside the Photos Library package contents.

For this:
Go to your photos library location (generally Pictures)
Right click Photos Library and select "Show Package Contents"
Right click the "Masters" folders and add a tag for it
Now go to Google Photos preferences and add the Masters folder by accessing it through your Tags on the sidebar of the finder prompt windows.
Enjoy ;)

Free for 6 months then they will have to charge

I've tried so many services that come out and say free. Then 6 months down the road suddenly you get an email saying that free service is now going to cost you a lot of money from now on. So I have to cancel. I predict Google will do the same as the cost of serving so much data will force that on them. Better to stick with Apple :apple:

Maybe, maybe not. This is not a new service from Google. It's just taking the Photos out of Google+ into a standalone app. I've been using the free service for 2 years now so maybe you're wrong on the "free" bit going away.

unlimited storage in iCloud

A point worth noting. Apple clearly states that photos and videos which are shared, don't count against your iCloud storage.

I haven't signed up for any additional storage beyond the free 5GB and I still have 4.8GB of that available. I simply create albums which are shared with only me.

Has Google done that with their services? Seems like they are a large enough company not to need to do something like that. And if the same logic is applied, then Apple can do the same thing, right?

I was just reminded that these shared photos are not stored at full resolution, so not quite the same.

Are you aware that Google has been offering unlimited space since at least 3 years and that Flickr offers 1TB free?

You think Apple's safer on that front?
Of course, way safer.

Apples interests are more aligned with those of its customers, because they don't get payed by advertisers or corporations. When the guy who buys the computer is the same guy who uses the computer, it's going to be a good to use computer which will protect user data just fine.

I thought I'd chime in here.

For everyone that dislikes/fears/loathes Google, Facebook et al, for data mining reasons-these people are the least of your worries.

My wife works for Experian, who by their very nature, know EVERYTHING about you.

They know what credit & debit cards you have/had, what addresses you've been at, phone contracts, mortgages, loans, I can't stress quite how much these companies know about you.

Literally, every time you spend money, get finance, register anything financially, they clock it and using various products that they sell, use it to sell their products.
