Wrong. Apple is allowing encryption on devices and the cloud they they don't have keys to. They don't peek at it so no access. Google peeks so they do.

If Apple really stopped the NSA from having access, the company would have already been sued by the Government and likely lost.

It's honestly extremely nice so far. I already like it better than Apple's Photos app.

The fact that it can search for things within your photos should be a pretty good indication that you're data-mining the F out of you though. Also Google, I'm pretty sure some of these things aren't "cars"...

Yep liking it so far. Plus it's too for me anyways, I always have a photo section with them (to share with family), they just transferred everything over to the new system.

Except that it was her weak account password that was to blame. Apple wasn't hacked in any way.

Not hacked, but also didn't encrypt the stored backup data, from what i recall.

EDIT: Recalled that incorrectly, it was that they didn't offer 2-factor authentication for iCloud backups (in addition to having an exploit in Find My iPhone that allowed for brute forcing).

And just like that, the NSA now has turnkey access to your photos. I will stick to Apple, thanks.

And you can bet that Google will mine your photos' metadata to learn your hangouts and use face recognition to find your friends. Combine those two 'features' with the other information they gather about you and you will get even more targeted advertising. Once again, with Google you are the product.

I'd like to hear Jennifer Lawrence's opinion on that. scnr :p

in case of hers/celebrity, it was more of a weak password and widely known security questions because it's all out in the open. Not the system. My password is probably not what celebrities would use, it's complex and lots of characters.

Know the difference.

Yup, this! I wonder what kind of concoction they have that would recognize what kind of clothing & shoes you wear, where your location, so they can sell that details to advertisers.

And I thought Flickr was beyond comparison! I'm impressed and I think the service will be great. Unfortunately belongs to Google (and hence, NSA).

I'll read the privacy policy just out of curiosity.

Well, sadly, you're wrong on that account. Apple has to follow the laws like anyone else.

It's not about laws, it's about products and with Google your photos are their product or better said your personal life will be used to advertise more precisely and to do market research.
Why do people don't get this?

And yes, Apple peeks, like any provider, how do you think search, anti spam and other tools work?

Apple at least used to check email titles. Remember the brouhaha a couple of years ago when Apple's servers starting automatically deleting emails with the words "barely legal teen" in the title?

Google's unlimited photos are not "free" like they blatantly lie about. They're free in the sense that you won't have to send them cash. You pay for them by giving Google details about your private life. You tell them where you vacation, near/inside what businesses you take pictures, how often you travel, and so on and so forth.

At least Google gives back something in return for our info.

Apple uses our info for selling iAds, plus gets paid by banks to continue to allow our full purchase info to get through to them (unlike Google Wallet, which acted as a proxy), and what services do they give us free in return?

iCloud was at fault as well. Before the incident, a hacker was able to bruteforce access without getting locked out.

"You are the product" is just plain wrong. Everyone is caught up on this, and I think Tim Cook was the first big name to say it. A person is more than random statistics, which is what Google uses to sell Ad Space. They sometimes share anonymized data with advertisers. But if you value your life to just data, that's sad.

So they aren't lying since the service is free in the sense that it is applied to the monetary cost of the service, as that is the main aspect relating to the price of something that is generally communicated to the consumer.

Google doesn't sell personal information.

Google isn't selling 'random' statistics. That would be ineffective and worthless. They are selling highly specific profile information that results in higher click-through rates on the ads. A lot of people seem to be more than willing to give up their privacy in exchange for being the recipient of targeted advertising. Now that is sad.

I really hope this spurs Apple into reducing the price of their 1TB tier. $20 a month is just too much.

What? I read it three times and I'm still lost. Next.

Downscaling? Ewwww... I'd never accept that. Horrible. This will be a deal breaker for most people.

You do realize that the highest resolution iPhone camera takes 8 meg photos, right?

Which means that with the 16 megs threshold, you really don't have to worry about downscaling....

I am happy to see this service, although I've been using Dropbox for a while and it works well.

iCloud is so limited, including for stuff like data sharing, that it is practically useless and I cancelled my plan.

I just wish we can have Google Photos natively on Apple TV.
