It was either for show, or Jobs was a hypocrite.

Quote from Jobs from the Isaacson book:

"Picasso had a saying - `good artists copy, great artists steal' - and we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas."

With all due respect, I disagree with Larry's narrative or spin. Perhaps Larry is just too young or simple-minded to realize SJ complicated persona from life filled with betrayals.

Page goes on to claim that he believes companies should not be looking at their competitors and instead should simply be doing their best to improve the world.

Interesting. If Google weren't looking at their competitor (Apple), Android wouldn't exist as it does today...it would be a defunct RIM OS copy.

Well, only Steve knew the truth and took it to the grave.

No, he didn't. He made his feelings quite clear.

Sure Larry, sure...now if you could just lay off that crack pipe of yours...

If SJ were alive he would NEVER consider any kind of settlement with you thieves. Too bad Tim Cook is not as principled.

Agreed. Jobs believed in principles above profits. Cook will give up and roll over to Android versus spending what it would take to "bury" them.

It's easy to speculate and make claims now that Jobs is not here to speak for himself.

Android ripped off a lot of Apple technologies and IP. Google and their hardware partners will continue to try to whitewash this obvious theft in the media.

Steve hated Android with a fiery passion. That was NOT a show.

Agreed. For good or bad, Steve Jobs has always gone with his heart not with good business. Steve wanted to destroy Android for robbing Apple's years of hard work on the original iPhone.

It was pretty clear he wasn't trying to get money from Android/Google but to get them to stop taking what he perceived as Apple's ideas. It seems like under Tim Cook things might be shifting...

Making an enemy of Apple was a seriously pin-headed move on Google's part. How long until Apple unveils its own search services, fully-integrated into iOS? Apple would be fools to allow Google to continue to raid the refrigerator after becoming such an insufferable house guest.

Microsoft has Bing. Apple needs its own search foundation too. Time to give Google the old heave-ho.

And Apple will be a more profitable company doing it Cook's way.

"For a lot of companies, it’s useful for them to feel like they have an obvious competitor and to rally around that."

Well it is kinda true that iOS does not have any 'obvious' competition lol. It's still miles ahead of Android.

This confirmed my exact thoughts.

A guy that says he was always "shameless about stealing great ideas", then says he will destroy someone for stealing his ideas… Weird. I've always thought Steve used to say that to keep other competitors afraid. That way, anyone would think twice before trying something like Android, after all, not everyone is as powerful as google to face Apple.

It's also good for motivating the team at Apple, because it gives them a "game-on" sensation. To me, Larry is saying the truth…

We'll never know, tho… :(

And you understand SJ so well? LOL the internet... I'm sure Larry knew Jobs better than you and I, he did after-all meet with him not long before Job's death at which point Jobs gave him a bunch of advice for running Google... It's all in Jobs biography.

Excactly. Especially when most of Google's mobile revenue came from Apple's iOS:

I don't think it was for show, but I'm also not sure I ever agreed with Jobs that Android was some egregious copycat offender.

It's actually kind of ironic really. Apple is built on a Jobs-ian paranoia of not becoming overly reliant on anyone else for anything, and yet people suggest that Google rely solely on Apple for the future of its mobile profits? When Microsoft was pushing Bing and could have easily captured the low-end mobile landscape? Get real.

Google has done a lot of questionable things lately, but building Android isn't one of them.

Its in Google's interest to make people think Android is not a stoled product, that they just invented it, copying nobody.

You're right Larry, it is useful for companies to feel like they have a competitor. Truth is, they (Apple) don't have one. I'm sorry you're so bitter. Cheers.

That is part of what Siri is about I suspect.
Less "tracking" by Google, and zero ads by Google, and no revenue to Google.

As Apple gets more database providers onboard Siri will expand in capability and further divert revenue away from Google back to Apple. We are starting to see Apple using other Map providers already, this is just the start.

Equally, as Siri improves I think you will see it on an expanding range of devices, iPad, iPod, OSX. If they then allow Siri to start doing things with 3rd party apps as well as their own then we start a whole new ball game.

This was my thought as well. It actually makes sense, considering the kind of person SJ was.

LOL @ all the people who dismiss Larry's words as if they were flies on Steve's walls. Haven't you seen enough of Steve's keynotes to know that he could act very well? What you people see in public and what goes on behind close doors at Apple/Google etc. are two different stories. Many of you may not be old enough to remember the heated rivalry between Apple and MS in the 80's, but guess who came to Apple's rescue when Scully ran it to the ground?

Page had a good working relationship with Steve almost to the day Steve passed away. Read the book, people.

Tim Cook is a better businessman than Steve. He doesn't let emotion interfere with his decisions.

There are huge personality differences between wealth creators and wealth managers.

Steve Jobs = wealth creator
Tim Cook = wealth manager

"For a lot of companies, it’s useful for them to feel like they have an obvious competitor and to rally around that."

By the same Larry Page Logic, that quote above means that they don't have a competitor in android, by which he is saying that android can't and isn't able to compete with Apple, even though they have tried.

The same way page thinks that Steve Jobs' "Thermonuclear war is a heartwarming handshake"

Reality check... Page is an idiot.

Oh give it up Larry. You sound pathetic.

I can't believe Page tries to say this crap with a straight face.

Whatever helps you sleep at night, Larry. You jackass.

wow.. some of you really take this wayy too seriously/personal. all I really gathered from that article is that Page was just saying that Jobs wasn't a hateful person.. that Jobs, as a leader, gave the people in his company something to rally around, that he was a good friend and mentor. that he was honored that Jobs requested to meet with him during his dying days..

Didn't apple also buy some mapping company that puts together amazingly crisp 3d maps? I would love to see some of that in iOS :)
