Google ditched Google Fiber and started a ripoff Google FI. I wonder where they are headed.

I signed up for it and am transferring my plan from tmobile to fi.

I have a couple of lte ipads - which is nice to be able to use on the same plan. That and the fact that I'm don't use a ton of non-wifi data - I think this makes sense. It's nice to have LTE enabled devices when you need it.

We'll see how it goes - If I don't like the plan after a couple of months, I can always go back to tmobile.

I'll stick with Mint.

$20 for 5GB, unlimited calls and text, VVM, WiFi Calling, VoLTE and they only throttle you after you go over your data allowance.

I don't like the idea of Google being an ISP, since they're also an Internet services company. Seems like an obvious trust setup.

Actually I would classify Google as a criminal when I consider how they break the european data protection laws...
I see that as freedom fighting ;)

However, the bigger deal breaker is the data collection and privacy issues with using Google.
There's no way Google is worse than the existing cell companies in this regard. If anything, they must be better. Remember this BS? https://www.zdnet.com/article/cell-...ed-millions-of-americans-real-time-locations/ A site providing realtime cellphone locations had a bug in it, allowing anyone to view anyone else's location. But the worst part was how they got the data in the first place, and it was never mentioned again.

Think I'll stick with my 25/month contract from 3 with unlimited data and international roaming

Considering my family's shared account often use more than 25GB of data on one day, I'd say 15GB in a month isn't much value.

We have 7 iPhones and 4 iPads and 1 LTE Apple Watch on our AT&T Unlimited family plan (7 people). The $408/mo we pay after taxes averages out to $36.18/month per iDevice and $10/mo for the Apple Watch, after taxes.

That's a lot cheaper than $80/mo for Google Fi unlimited plan, although for people with a compatible Android phone who need it to switch between three network's LTE, it might be worth it. Also for people who only use less than 2 GB of data, then the cost is closer to our per device cost.

Of the 7 iPhones, my brother with no WiFi uses 20-30GB per month, and three of us use 8-10GB per month, while the other 3 use about 3-4 GB per month = about 70 GB total per month. Four of us would be at the $80/mo max, and three of us would be at the $50-60/mo range = $470-$500/mo, NOT INCLUDING THE 15-20 GB we use on the 4 iPads, which adds another $150-200/mo on top of that!

No, but I don't travel enough for that to be worth it.

When I was traveling abroad in Europe earlier this year, Verizon charged me $35 per month of International Roaming with 100 MB of data. I didn't use the data much since you find WiFi most of the time. However, the talk and text was included for like 100 Messages and 200 minutes or something like that. So, for a little cost, having the peace of mind that knowing I would be connected to a network as I get off the plane was very convenient.

Most of the folks around the world outside of Americas are pretty familiar with WhatsApp and are available on it. So, as soon as I could grab hold of a WiFi, I was able to make phone calls, text whoever I needed to get in touch with.

But, when I'm back in the US again, I don't remember Verizon ever charging me for sending out International SMS. It was always free.

Our countries are financing public infrastructure like schools, roads etc with it. It's one of the reasons we don't have to pay fees for university.

I wish it were like that in the UK. We get wonderful things like high petrol prices even though we have the fricking North Sea, and tuition fees on top of taxes. WTAF.

$10 per GB? I have accounts in 3 countries and none of them charge that much.
Google - we make sure you always get the worst deal!

Fi is not priced linearly. This article did a bad job explaining the pricing. Even though the calculator only goes up to 6 people, you would likely save money using Fi. The iPads are included in Fi with no additional cost.

Also, losing Visual Voice Mail is a good thing. First, it's NOT visual. You still have to listen. I moved my VM to google voice years ago, and just read transcribed VMs. It is superior to having to listen to a VM. And since it sends it in a text, if the person leaving the VM says a number to call back, it is easy to touch and call back right from the text.

So my choices are:
$148 for 2 lines with unlimited everything and ALL my iPhone functions, on Verizon, the largest and fastest cellular network
OR
$160 for 2 lines and speeds slowed down after 15gb, PARTIAL function of my iPhone and piggy backing on T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Sprint networks?

Wow....that is rather tempting...........if I were an idiot.

80$ for 6GB of data? What?

In Europe I Pay 18 euros for unlimited text and calls, 5GB for regular usage, 10GB data plan for Spotify, Apple Music, Instagram, Facebook and other apps, 5GB data plan for YouTube and Netflix (once it ends it start using the regular data plan), and it also includes the subscription of Apple Music. For 18 euros a month (20.5$).

PS: I forgot to add but I get 6GB of data plan for roaming in the European Union plus unlimited calls and SMS.

Are the data plans that expensive in the US?

Wow the ignorance in this thread. People stating it's a rip off, obviously you don't fit in the target market but apparently that concept is hard to grasp for many here.

Google Fi is for people who don't use much data and / or travels a lot.

I will be traveling a ton next ywar (I will be out of the country for about 5 months). I will be going to several other countriee during this 5 month span. I would consider switching then.

But 30$ for phone flat + 1GB is extremly expensive. You can get that for under 10eur even in expensive Germany. My current plan is flat phone, flat messaging + unlimited data (downgrade to umts after 25GB) - I pay 35eur...

I frankly don't give a damn what you get in Germany. I don't give a damn what people are getting in Sweden, the UK, Portugal or the ****ing moon either. People who keep saying "Google Fi is a ripoff, I only pay $X for in [insert name of a country besides the US here]!" are comparing apples and oranges.

I'm in the US. For my usage, Google Fi is the best option when compared to other US carriers.

Preach. I'm English but in the US, so well aware that I'm getting screwed on cell plans. Google Fi is a reasonably priced option for those in the US without massive data needs. Especially if you frequently travel abroad.

Seem a bit of a rip off to me. I get unlimited everything including taxes from Tmobile for $85 iPhone, iPad and a Series 4 watch.
I don't see how it is a ripoff, considering "unlimited" for one iPhone and an iPad is $80 for Google Fi - the iPad data only sim is free. I don't know if they support Apple Watch though. Also if you use less than 6GB then you get a refund on the data you didn't use...

Also you get T-Mobile & Sprint networks combined, so more coverage.

No WIFI calling? Yeah, that's a deal breaker. Living and traveling in the Intermountain west with t-Mobile signal doesn't cut it without WIFI calling. I live in the middle of town and barely get 1bar with t-Mobile. Yeah, WIFI calling is essential here if the system your using used t-Mobile towers.
