What!? You mean a maps application can't be built in a day with 3D maps, TbyT and all the other features we want and need??

Preposterous....

/s

Some of these comments are so funny. SO apple will have a competing maps app by the time Google IF they do have their maps apps for iOS. Really, holy smokes!!!! Listen to yourselves.

Anyone else think Google is in no rush to help out a competitor platform? I don't see how it could take several months to make a maps app. Use the Android one as a basis. Or use the old iOS one as a basis. I mean, there were working navigation apps within a month of the App Store's launch...

COMPLETELY agree... Hope Apple soon trumps google completely.

Glad you're having such a good time. :)

Why not just put out an app that replicates the old Maps app (perhaps with turn-by-turn?), then update it in a couple of months once the 3D mapping issues have been solved?
I still really don't get what's so great about 3D mapping. It's fun and nice to look at (virtual visits of famous landmarks, etc...) but the amount of work required somehow seems like a waste.
Anyway, just bring back the Google Maps from iOS 5, same feature-set and let's get this over. I'd really like to get myself an iPhone 5.

Delusional

A lot of you, including ipedro are delusional. Google HAS been working on an iOS Google Maps since iOS 6 betas were released showing no more support for Google Maps. Read up and do some research. Further, to say it's well played by Apple is hilarious. It's like Apple can do no wrong in your eyes. If you took all Google services off the iPhone like I hope Google does, i.e., Google Earth, Chrome, Gmail, Google+, translate, Google Voice, Google Drive, YouTube, Apple would be in a world of hurt. It's funny you people think it's going to take a measily couple of months to almost fully heal Apple Maps when it's taken Google years and years and years to get it done right. Start from the ground up. Apple bought tons of companies and slapped them all together hoping they'd work. I think it's genius of Google to have kept their app available at iOS 6 launch. Now people will see how horrible Apple Maps is and how long it'll take to get it even near usable and they'll be begging for Apple to bring back Maps.

It will take YEARS for Apple to catch up on Google. Google is years ahead in experience, they have a bigger team dedicated to maps, and lots, lots, lots of data for POI's. Data gathering is their specialty, even. Add to that the poor reputation Apple has launching services (think MobileMe and Ping) and I can't see how this can ever succeed.

I believe Apple will improve their maps, sure, but catch up on Google? I don't think so.

In Denver, Apple's Maps app works pretty well. The UI is very nice. But the lack of mass transit data is a really big disappointment for me.
Hopefull they can tap into that data feed sooner than later.

Transit apps solved that problem for me already. On day one, my Transit apps list in Maps was empty. Yesterday it had 11 apps. Today, they're over 20.

I downloaded HopHop and Transit and both work really well. Let's be honest, GoogleMaps' transit directions were horrible. I never used it. I've always used dedicated transit apps. Google's transit data was based on posted schedules... When was a bus ever on time??

Apple's approach is that it's much more likely that a local transit company and developers will get their specific transit done right and better than any company in Palo Alto or Cupertino, California. I'll take a bet on Apple's approach.

Mark my words: google will release a half-baked app on purpose and will claim that if you want the full experience you will need to get Android.
Most of us don't really care about the "full experience." We'd be OK with accurate, usable maps, like the ones in iOS 5.

I still can't work out how to submit problems like 99% of significant POIs not being present.

Tonight I'm treating the Mrs to an Indian Takeaway from my favourite Indian restaurant up the road. It's not on Apple Maps (what is?) but how do I report it?

I can only see how to correct the 1% of POIs that are on the map 99% of which are slightly or completely wrong.

I'm tired of all this maps talk. Stop it.

Stop talking!

You're tearing me apart!

I guess we'll see.

Didn't realize Google Earth had 3D. Apparently not in my area but I went to the area in the pics used here, and it's pretty neat.

If they manage to merge the two they'll probably have a way better app than Apple's. Google doesn't have to play catch up on data accuracy for one and they already have a way larger database than Yelp for business locations and such. They just got to add the features.

The only thing I dislike is I prefer Apple's way on 3D that you just use two fingers to change the angle rather than having to tilt my iphone to change the angle. (Well that and Apple has 3D in my area and Google doesn't ;) ).What if I want to look from one angle but not have my phone tilted like that? Not to mention I found the google app was really slow to respond to me tilting it, sometimes not even acknowledging that I tilted it. And if I relaxed without meaning too at all the angle would change when it was responding well, kinda annoying. It would be really nice if they at least had a lock button so you didn't have to worry about inadvertantly changing the angle you want once you get it. Personally, I think Apple's way is better period though Google's is more gadgety like so likely to get people thinking it's more nifty until they really want to use it.

For this alone I hope Apple gets with it and makes big improvements in their data/maps. But... in my opinion Apple has never shown to be good at making individual software stuff. It's always less featured and so basic sometimes they miss even basic functionality. So I really don't have faith Apple will have as full featured or as good data as Google would on their maps app. Though hopefully Apple at least makes the maps app accurate. It's not like the old maps app was that great (except it used a better data set). I personally bought a turn by turn app for my GPS and use the maps app for quick references for places or just to check traffic (cause google had good traffic reporting) even before Apple changed their app (and I had no plans on using Apple's turn by turn, I just don't trust they'd be better than Navigon just cause I don't usually find their apps that useful. I pretty much have a 3rd party app for almost all the apps I would use that Apple provided. It's also why I wish Apple would let 3rd party apps program Siri functionality into their app, cause i don't use most of APple's apps so that makes siri pretty useless to me). So that's why I'm not that upset about losing google map data.

I do hope Apple improves it, I do think 3D is better than streetview for what I'd use streetview for. And I think Apple's implementation of the 3D UI is better. And honestly, I want to see the iphone succeed and I think this is a huge blemish on it.

here's a link that helps reporting problems:

Google is a busy company. Why should they spend the resources to rush an app for their competitor's platform when it was Apple who ditched them early? Just be happy that Google is not like Apple and will be offering their services to any platform, even their competitor's.

I don't think anyone would really notice. Aren't most of those available on the web?

Google isn't know for making stellar iOS apps, or making iOS apps quickly. The YouTube one JUST came out! We've needed it since day one.

Easy. For the same reason Google pays Apple to be the default search provider. IIRC it was close to a billion dollars. It's big money for sure.

I always wondered why Google Earth and Google Maps were separate. I like Google Earth because it's a native app you can run that also gives you tons of options for viewing the world. However, it's not as good as Google Maps at being a map. It's about time they merged.

Please don't

This kind of merging only leads to bloated applications that load more slowly and are slower to react to commands.

I don't need a 3D map. I just want to find a place that is actually where it's supposed to be.

Also, who is going to sit on their iPod product and look at a 3D flyover? Maybe on an iPad, but not an iPhone or iPod touch.
