Got my NEW 2016 15" MacBook Pro...SCRATCH right out of the box?

I am waiting for my third replacement. Idc if it takes them 50 computers to send me. I have never received a less then perfect apple product. I also have a 2009 mbp with no scratches. Some people take care of there stuff tool or not to each his own.

My first machine looks like the first picture while the scratch on the replacement is about half the size and less noticeable still it shouldn't be there.

What the hell are they doing during the assembly? I got the impression Apple products are usually assembled with extreme care but in this case it looks really careless. I guess it's not Apple's fault but the manufacturing company's and Apple will certainly pass on the costs for replacement to the manufacturing partner but in the end the workers there will pay the price.

I have a little bit of scratch that bothers me too, I don't feel like returning it, but still hesitate.

Uhh, this is a $3000 machine, not something they bought for $10 at Walmart.

Seems, like some others here, you are more interested in the price of things than their value.

My Mac Mini cost me a month's pay. I just took it home and plugged it in where the old one (a G4 2005 original) had been the day before (when the HDD drive failed; replacement was more cost effective than repair) uploaded my backed up files, and got on with using it. Not interested in checking it out for blemishes, I had stuff to do.

How much something costs is irrelevant. Be it toaster, electric jug, camera, computer, or whatever, as long as they function as intended, and provide the bang for buck I expect, I'm happy. Nice to see the odd other with a similar, common sense point of view.

I just got my 15" space gray macbook last night, and I have the same scratch in the same exact place. I've been using it all day long and already forgot about it, I don't even notice it. I won't ask for a replacement because I need it for work and don't wanna wait another month or a few weeks, cause I don't have another machine to work with (I've been using an iPad with bluttooth keyboard these last month and suffered a lot).

For me it's irrelevant, but I guess someone could be bothered.

On the other hand there are those who ramble on, hypothetically speaking about what might be, could be, from a theoretical point of view…...

I'm fully aware that the damage in reality was caused by the purchaser. I specifically premised a hypothetical scenario in which the computer arrives with said cosmetic damage and if that damage should also be acceptable to someone in your mind. It's pretty obvious that if the consumer damages it, then it's their own fault.

You also completely ignored that this scratch could be a symptom of a more serious issue on the line making them. Nobody can know unless somebody goes to inspect the line these are being made on. But keep defending Apple's poor QC and criticizing their customers' decision to remedy it. Hopefully Apple has fixed it, as I'm sure they're probably aware of it at this point.

People here are spending sometimes upwards of $3,000 for these computers. If you think people are returning them because they want to show off their new "ornament" to everyone, sans blemishes, rather than because they feel ripped off for spending what most people consider an exorbitant amount of money for a computer and receiving a blemished product, I don't know what to tell you. But then again you apparently are able to know the thinking of wide swathes of people, as you've made clear several times.

…….. whose obsessive pristine existence is shattered by a blemish. Get a life, I say, in my humble opinion.

Your are certainly entitled to your opinion. But Apple charges a premium for their products and bases much of that premium on design, aesthetics and quality. I'm sure Ive himself would not be happy to be using a MB Pro with a cosmetic blemish.

Add me to the list of being miffed with a scratch on my brand new MBP. Delivered today and sporting that unsightly scratch below the speaker grill. Mine is Silver which seems to hide it a bit better but still ticked it's there. Especially after waiting so long for it to arrive.

Sorry to welcome you to this club, Carilyn. Was your silver MBP custom build? I return shipped my 15" space gray touch bar to Apple and will drive 2 hours again to Christiana Apple to pick up the replacement.

If the replacement has the same factory scratch, I will just keep it. My 2012 15" MBP retina has zero scratches on the interior and exterior after 4.5 years of use (edges have minor nicks after bumping into stuff).

Yes, it was a custom build. Still debating on returning it. I'll probably keep it only because the scratch is barely noticeable and I'm honestly tired of waiting. If the Apple stores would get a 1tb 460 in stock I'd upgrade (mine is 2.9/512/460) to have it scratch free but none of those seem to be available locally. I can only see the scratch at certain angles so I'm sure I'll get used to it but man, what a disappointment! Besides the blemish the machine is beautiful. I have a stock model with the 455 graphics card new in box sitting in my closet that I am so tempted to peek at to see if it's scratched also but I'm settled on wanting the 460 now so I have plans on returning the unopened one.

Hopefully your next one is blemish free!

I know I'm going to take a lot of heat for this - but do you guys honestly replace things for reasons like this? I'm sorry, but is that an American thing? It's not PERFECT, so I'm going to get another one? I don't want to get preachy or anything, but what about preserving energy, resources, recycling, human effort, electronic waste? I know Apple recycles/refurbishes these, but it somehow feels wrong to return a computer because of some miniscule scratch. It's like, I don't know, a dark side of capitalism, first world problem taken to the extreme, provoking the wrath of nature or something I can understand returning it for functional reasons - or realizing it's not a product for you, but this seems a bit too much for me. I could be wrong. Sorry for this, I hope no one gets insulted, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

- part of the high price you pay is for design that Apple prides itself of. If the design (which is part of what I pay for) is defective, the product is faulty. Or would you buy a scratched Rolex watch?

I can absolutely understand people returning these units but I will add that such defects occur across many luxury brands no matter the price tag or reputation for quality assurance. I bought an Omega Speedmaster Professional (everything I own is 'pro' obviously) and had to exchange it four times in store as each model I was given had resting minute markers way off the '12 o'clock' position - unfathomable for a watch of that caliber.

Could one use this scratch as leverage against a third party reseller? Like, buy it and open it up in-store, see the scratch and demand a 10% discount. I wouldn't say no to that.

First world problems, I agree and I also park my brand new Escalade far away from other cars in a parking lot because I have a fear of door dings. Lol. That's just me. Replacement took over 2 and a half weeks to come in, replacement has a tiny spec scratch on the left side but honestly I'm not waiting another 2+ weeks and having to migrate Mac OS along with cloning Bootcamp again.

Both of these had no issues with the 460 playing games or graphic corruption. I rather have a tiny speck scratch on mine then waiting 2 weeks again, migrate and clone bootcamp, and possibly having something else wrong with it (GPU, display, keyboard, touchbar, etc.).

Your call.

an escalade????? sweet geezes what do you do for a living?

it seems like all these BTO includig mine have this scratch. must be a manufacturing process where the machine must pick up the unibody for whatever reason and maybe it has a sharp edge or something on it.

Exactly why I'm not exchanging. I'm putting mine through its paces with photoshop and Lightroom today and if it's error free then I'm considering myself lucky and happy. The small scratch isn't a huge issue at all in the grand scheme of things. More of just a small annoyance. Do I wish it wasn't there? Sure. But I'll get over that quick. Enjoy your new MBP!

Escalade was a 15 year wedding anniversary present from the husband. . Nicest car I've ever had or will have. I baby that thing.

mien has no technical issues but.......you rmaking it sound like im ricking a even defefective mac when my replacement arrive....which was suppose to be today but apple DELAYED IT BY ONE WEEK AHHHHHHH

My issues with replacing the unit for a minor scratch is getting one that does not work properly electronically in exchange. I would rather have a minor scruff than a screen that has issues others are reporting (uneven illumination, wonky keyboard, noisy fan, bad heat sink, etc.). I use my machines professionally and not having them available costs me time and money.

Yes I had second thoughts about return shipping my 15" BTO MBP, but I also noticed some fleeting graphics issues with the Radeon 460 on that laptop (strange patterns after login, switching apps). Otherwise it was a beautiful machine, and wow the speakers were amazing for a laptop! Better than my HP Envy's Bang and Olufsen.

Hahaha, I do the same, and my wife gets annoyed whenever I park far left field to protect our 2016 BMW X5 from those door ding savages. I like being proactive to protect our stuff for many years of use.

I try to do the same thing with my new X3. But my wife does the same with her 335, so she does not complain.
