I'd also really like to hear your thoughts on this. Were you used to matte or glossy? Have a preference?

And any feedback on the trackpad - which sounds amazing - and the keyboard would be great. Thanks and congrats again!

I know you weren't quoting/asking me, but I had a good fiddle with the thing for 15 minutes this afternoon. Really the gloss wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting; probably because they're using glass instead of the standard plastic gloss you see on a lot of PC notebooks. Reflections were a bit irritating, but if you angle the notebook correctly it's not so bad. Colors are nice but obviously over-saturated - I am used to a matte screen so there's quite a difference.

Trackpad is very nice and smooth. The clicker is a bit firm at first, but once you get used to pushing it down with enough force it's not that bad at all. Personally I prefer the tapping anyway instead of a physical click though.

Got one today too in Regent Street. I was there at nine when they open and about 20 people or so were waiting. I haven't have real time to play yet with the MacBook Pro but i agree, the track pad is like silk and the palm rest edge like a guillotine! But this thing is beautiful, the attention to detail, design wise, is remarkable.
I find the screen great because is so bright, so no problems with the gloss so far, but I haven't tested it outside or in a room full of windows etc.
It does feel great so far and really speedy. I was open mouthed when I transcoded a 750 MB flick with Visual Hub in 12 minutes! It used to take me close to an hour or more with my PowerBook 17. 1.5

haha probably...I had a red crumpler bag, and was with a guy with a guitar :D Got the HE discount too- I love being a student! £58 for applecare iirc too!

Ah cool, I remember :) I was the guy with the suede jacket on. How much was it with the HE discount in the end if you don't mind me asking?

Could you comment on the viewing angles please? And if you have an older macbook pro or macbook please compare. :D

With the HE (that's the best one right?) it was £1190, but the smaller price lists they have only have the lower discount so she first quoted me £1280 or something...Had to hit dashboard & show her on the calculator that that wasn't 15% ;) Applecare is definitely worth it I reckon, as are the "free" nano, and printer!

edit: i've just noticed that the screen goes back way further than the older MB/Ps!

Did I get it right? Does the MacBookPro have 2 video cards? The 9400M+9600M?
Yup, it sounds really gayy when I mention to my frens the new MBP will have 2 GPU, too bad we cant run both at the same time (or can we? with some modifications, well at least on the Windows side).

The feature is good but the disappointment is in order to switch GPU, it requires a log out to switch, this reminds me of Vista UAC. Lets hope Apple fix this problem ASAP. It really make the dual GPU feature less appealing.

I rarely use the physical click too except when I want to drag icons, how do I drag icons now?

How is the gloss screen? The the "more light" thing really reduce reflection and make the colors more faithful, or is it as terrible as many of us are thinking it is?
I'm interested in this too.

Er I'd say it's roughly the same for about 30% off axis, then the colour starts to go kinda off, but I think it's better than our MB (I can't see right now cos I'm at uni, so I'll be able to update on Friday, though I guess someone will have already compared by then!)

One other thing I noticed is that the very top part of the track pad is not clickable, it's like if it is fixed at the top and the clicking 'slopes down' so the further down you click the less pressure you need.

Is it possible to change te HD into a SSD in the future. Now SSD is expensive.. I ordered the 1999 macbook Pro + 4GB RAM at the local Apple shop :) what kind of RAM memory is in the Macbook Pro? Not PC 6400...

Actually, when I first got it out and had it facing the window it was really reflecty, but it's fine facing away...I've just turned the brightness to full and it is BRIGHT though - I think it might actually outshine alot of the reflections! I can't see myself or my room behind me reflected with the brightness past 3 dots, so it's promising. I'm sure it's gonna have to be a road test type thing, and as I haven't moved it yet, it might be a while before we really know!

Ouch, Brightness needs to be at maximum to get rid of the reflections? =(
... Is it still as bright as the old MBPs? Because I really can't get mine even to 3 spaces before the maximum brightness before my eyes begin to hurt. (The brightest setting is so bright, I can see my self with the iSight camera even in a completely dark room! o_O)

oh lol, no...the full brightness hurts my eyes almost! I was just saying how much headroom it has! :D

Don't really wanna go higher than 5 bars from full atm!

I'd have to say that I can't particularly tell that it's glass though, but its really silky smooth!
I cannot wait to get my fingers on this trackpad!

Which kinda leads me on to the keyboard - it's much nicer to type on than the MB chiclet one tbh, as there are small grooves in the keys, so you can intuitively feel where the centre is! I haven't mistyped any more than I do on my apple white keyboard (the one before the chiclet).
That's really good to hear.

Looking through System Profiler tells me that the superdrive is a Matshita UJ 868, so looks like there's gonna be no way to legally get around DVD regions! :(
Boo! My Fujitsu notebook is almost five years old and can do the multi-region tango. Not that I reckon I'll be watching DVDs on my MBP though so I guess it's not relevant to me. But still.

Oooooh, pictures. And I think that's the first shot I've seen of this thing with no reflections. Awesome :D

Thanks so much for sharing! I'd love to hear any more impressions you have :)

No no, cheers for answering, thanks. It's really useful getting different opinions, especially those of people used to matte screens. I wonder if the over-saturation will bother me. (Can one change the settings for things like saturation and contrast on MBPs?)

I far, far prefer tapping too. When I first began thinking about switching from PC to Mac the concept of not being able to do so was really stressing me out. Same with supposedly not being able to right-click. I have my two friends who have MacBooks, but who have apparently never actually explored their machines, to thank for my ignorance! The genius who explained to me how to do both was very nice and didn't once look at me like, 'Duh, noob, it's a Mac, obviously you can do this stuff'

You can calibrate the display in OS X, which sets the contrast, white point, gamma etc, though whenever i follow the steps (on any mac) it looks really stupidly punchy and is definitely tinted in various hues  It's probably my eye, but it could partly be the software. The macbooks always come setup correctly anyway, so there's no real need to go poking

Continuing with my 7 hour road test, I've noticed that sometimes when you pick it up, your finger can slide into the battery/back release catch...It's not got anywhere near releasing it, but I guess it's something to bear in mind!

To give you a further idea how bright the display goes - I just ichated (sp? is that even remotely a word?!) with my family and turned it to full for a joke and it looked like I was in a nuclear blast! ;) I think that it'll definitely help with the reflections (which I stil haven't had a problems with, but it's night time, and I've only gone from my room to the living room and back!

I've also noticed the hinge isn't as stiff as the old models - if I tilt the laptop forward so that the screen is perpendicular to the ground, it starts to close the lid. I guess this is because of the glass on the display? I wouldn't nessecarily view this as poor quality though...its a really smooth action, and it goes back loads further than the old screens (a problem I think every 'Book user has encountered!) - I'd say approx. 45 degrees from the table (or if you prefer, 135 from closed to open? The closing magnetic latch is seriously smooth as well! Really awesome!

How do u switch the video card form 9400 to 9600 does it do it automatically or do u have to switch it manually?

Why does it matter to you if you don't know what Centrino is?

... these have NVIDIA chipsets, so they aren't Centrino. At all. They've just Intel CPUs.

Centrino is an Intel CPU type, Penryn is a Centrino, the Newly made Centrino 2 Intel processor is supporting graphics in a new stronger way, perfect for mobile gaming.
