got your C2D MBP? please tell us....

My new Mbp just arrived, it's 17" matte cd2 2gb 160gb hitachi 5400 rmp and seem to work fine. In fact, this is my first apple experience (wow) and I would like to ask you something: I noticed my machine gets quite hot on the battery and the back part of the base,, near the screen; it does this expecially when it charges. I donwloaded and installed the aplication fan control to check if everything is all right but I'm bot expert enough to judge. can anyone give any tip? thanks a lot!!!!

most batteries get hot/warm when they are charging. As long as it cools down when the charging is finished it should be fine. I think it stops charging at 100, and wont start charging until the level reaches around 95%.

Also, the bottom near the screen is where the heatpipes/fans/processors are located. It'll get warm there.
 
Now that I have a laptop (/hugs it) I decided to catch a train home from work this weekend rather than drive (it's about 3.5hrs by car, slightly longer by train).

I used my laptop the whole way between London Paddington and Taunton. I played around with Xcode for a while, watched some TV shows, and listened to music.

Just before I got to Taunton I checked the temperature. It was running at an amazing 42 degrees C.

I am *very* happy with this machine. 😀
 
FYI - heat discussion

Today I closed my 17 inch C2D while it was on.. I then put it in my back pack and road my bike to starbucks..... it is abot 40 degrees FAREN outside.....

I spoke with a friend for 20 minutes while pacing around outside in the cold.... and then pulled my computer out of my back pack.. The computer was silent but very very hot... Hotter than it has been when I use it for 6 hours on FCP and Motion....

does anyone have a silent superdrive?

Is it just me - or does the superdrive seem unhealthy noisy!? Mine works fine so far - but damm some weird noises coming from it when I load CDs...

Any thoughts on this? Anyone having a silent superdrive?

I don't actually have a MBP myself, but I was setting up and messing about with one of my profs brand-new 17" C2D MBP this weekend and I agree, the drive is noisy.

This one was even making a sound close to a quiet rattle, as well as munching and buzzing sounds.🙄 I would say that the drive is slightly noisier than the Macbooks', but pretty similar.

Aside from the noisy drive, I'm impressed with the build quality - it's very solid, and the 17' screen is huge. The glowing keyboard is fun. Airport reception seems to be slightly worse than the Macbook.

This one has 2 gigs RAM, a 2.33ghz C2D, and a 200gig HD. It's very speedy, and it does get quite warm even doing non-intensive tasks.

weird..Mine is wisper quiet... even at Max speeds
 
This is something I haven't noticed being discussed so I figure I'd just bring it up (that is unless of course it already has been brought up 😱 ) Are these draft n cards, which are coming stock in the new MBP C2D the equivalent of Apple's yet to be announced next iteration of the Airport Extreme? Is this more of an experiment pulled on buyers to see if this specific configuration of N?

What could the changes be when apple officially 'releases' the new extreme card?

My first macbook pro had what you are talking about. It sounded like a duck being kicked (very loud). Well, I thought that was weird but could live with it. Then it started having random shutdowns and strange fan behavior. So I sent it in and just got my replacement today! To my surprise, the dvd drive is MUCH quieter. I remember I used to have a Mashita or something, now it says:

mine actually has the excact same specs as above. The drive isnt all that noisy when a cd/dvd is running - it's more when i load the disc - i mean when i put the cd into the machine. It makes kinda crunching noises before it catches on the disc-reading...
 
Just to add my 2p on this ever increasing thread 🙂

Got my MBP (core 2 duo) 15"4 (matte) and the 160GB HD option.
Everything's peachy. The HD is the Hitachi one. The MBP is week 47.

Pros:
- Too many to list. Everything's working brilliantly. Parallels rocks. Wireless connections don't skip a beat to my Netgear DG834N. Rosetta is amazing from the point of view you just forget about it.
Works much better than my Powermac 2xG5 2Ghz and it's so much quieter I just don't understand how I lived with such a noisy machine for 2 1/2 years!
Note: I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 at work and although I love it the degree of integration and seamless computing with Mac OS X is just better especially when it comes to multimedia.

Cons:
- 1 red pixel stuck (I believe)
- The way dual screens are managed. I have a BenQ 241 connected to the DVI output of the MBP. I wanted to be able to use the MBP keyboard with the MBP screen switched off and only displaying on the BenQ monitor. So far I just managed to have both screens on with the BenQ setup as being on top of the MBP screen so I can drag windows up and down. It seems that (and I may be wrong here) that the only way to achieve what I want to do is to connect a keyboard/mouse to the MBP, close the lid then wake it up and enjoy the display on the external BenQ monitor... Why Apple doesn't offer a proper toggle feature when using F7 is beyond me ??!?!?

Open your Display Preferences. In there under the Arrangement Pane you can move a representation of the external screen to an appropriate position to the left or right of your MBP. Then you can drag the menu bar from the MBP screen image to the external monitor's image so you can then run the external without the internal monitor when you close the lid.

Also, you might want to see what DigitalTigers' SideCar™ can offer you in the way of alternative external monitor hook up. Haven't asked them about ExpressCard/34 yet. But I imagine it's coming soon.

I called them today and perhaps the ExpressCard/34 model will be ready by end of January they say. Shooting for one Dual Link DVI + Single Link DVI. So if they pull that off you would be able to drive two 30" + one 24" from a MacBook Pro.

Well duh! Next time try placing your laptop between 2 pillows 😀
Of course it will get hotter than if you ran at 100% of processor load for an hour straight. The heat's got no place to go!

Now for the good. You discovered a new way of using an MBP: keeping warm on a chiily day 😉

Mine never has this problem unless the computer turns on itself inside my backpack... it does that a lot sadly...

Yep! I've red that too, but I was wondering if it was possible to put 2x2GB cards in the 2 slots the machines have. Would the laptop recognize them all four? Anyway thanks a lot! Take care

The chipset supports only 3gigs, so if you put 2x2GB RAMs inside, it only recognizes it up to 3GB.
 
Late Spring '07 "Santa Rosa" MacBook Pro Will See & Use All 4MB of RAM

You will have to wait for Santa Rosa model in late Spring before the MacBook Pros can see and use 4GB of RAM.

I see. What I meant actually is that if I put another gig into my actual machine (it know has 2 GB) , that should be enough to provide me a machine I can play and work perfectly with for at least a couple of years... doesn't it? thx
 
Just got my MBP C2D. Great machine, although it has some issues:

- ugly, bright lower screen corners, a faint light stripe on the bottom
- lots of grain (glossy screen 9c57)
- hard drive makes clicking noises every few seconds

I'd really like to have good screen, it's a shame for this otherwise excellent machine! But as the grain and backlight issues people are complaining about for a month now apparently haven't been fixed by Apple, I don't really know how to get a good screen now. Returning it for repair makes probably no sense as most if not all MBP screens are like that, and waiting for them to switch to different screen models may take too long. Maybe I'll just to back to the Macbook. Better a small screen that looks perfect than a big one which is unevenly lit and grainy.
 
Received mine in December. Was a little bit of bite of the budget, but it's worth it.

Works great running QXP and Photoshop. I do a lot of magazine layout/web dev. work on the road either at a remote office or at trade shows.

Fantastic machine. No complaints, thus far.
 
After many hours of thinking and pondering on which model to buy, I finally went with the beefed up 15" MBP (2.33 ghz, 2gb ram, etc).
I've had it for about two hours so I'm still playing on it. So far I'm satisfied, overall satisfied. I can't really judge it yet 'cause I haven't been able to do much on it yet.
Feels really nice right now, screen looks nice, feels warm on my lap (running on battery only) but not too uncomfortable.
I'll post more later when I get home and I really get to do more.
 
MBP C2D Glossy 15" Has Different Mfr. Part #?

Just got my new MBP C2D Glossy 15" ordered from MacConnection.com.
From the serial #, it's manufactured in China in the 3rd week of 2007, when I was filling the rebate, I noticed that the Mfr. Part # was different than what it was listed for this model.
The Mfr. Part # listed on MacConnection rebate is Z0DLGlOSSY, the Mfr. Part # on my MBP box is Z0DP4LL/A...
Has Apple changed the Part #? or it's always the one I got?
