Not sure what the purpose is. I do have an external bluetooth GPS receiver I used to use with my Palm Treo with tomtom app.

That's what it is, a bluetooth GPS receiver. It lets any wifi only device with bluetooth act as an accurate GPS. There is a similar device that fits in the charging port of an iOS device and does the same thing. I'm interested because it would give me a flexible GPS system. My iPad for driving and my iPod for hiking.

I have a Garmin stand alone system. Don't want to deal with having it on my phone and what not. I just leave it in the car.

I don't trust those GPS systems...not much anyhow. I guess they're okay if you're lost, but I wouldn't trust it to direct you to where you're going without a bit of excitement (a few almost accidents because of outdated maps and plain bad software) "In one hundred feet, exit left. Exit left" (WTF? There is no left exit, only a right exit!)

I'm old school. I study a map before heading out to some place new. All I need to do is remember the names of a few key streets. As far as GPS systems. I find the higher end Garmin the least error prone of the units I've used.

Always use some discretion with a GPS. People who do exactly what it tells you to do are asking for trouble.

One notable instance for me was when I was driving in Toronto. My GPS wanted me to make a left turn on a very busy street that was I think 3 lanes in each direction, and there was no stop light or stop sign. That looked like a suicide mission, so I made a right turn instead and let the GPS recalculate and find me a new route which was a lot better. Another instance was when in New Orleans, it wanted me to drive through the French Quarter on Bourbon Street at night. As tempting as running over a bunch of drunks in my rental SUV was, I figured it was best to skip making that right turn and go down a different street.

A nav unit is like a religious text. It can be a great guide, but should never be taken literally because it might get you or someone else killed ;)
