Debate

Guidelines: Be willing to engage in fact-based, constructive debate. Look for ways to inform and learn from others.

Rules:

Sources. If you make claims of fact but don't cite sources when requested, the posts may be removed. If you started the thread then the thread may be closed or removed.
Repetition. If you repeat the same claims without adding new information, the posts may be removed. If you started the thread then the thread may be closed or removed.
Trolling. Posts that appear to be designed to cause argument or irritate rather than contribute to a constructive discussion are considered trolling and will be treated as such.
Duplicate discussions. If a new thread repeats a topic that has been previously discussed or debated, without basis for a separate discussion, the thread may be closed, removed, or merged into an earlier thread on the same topic. A news report on a previously discussed issue doesn't automatically deserve a new thread.

i'm referring to the UC schools. but, i must defer to you, because you obviously know more than I about tertiary education.

lol.

i don't think you even know what top 50 means. hint? it's not in those lists above.

start with RU/VH and work from there.

Your original quote said nothing about just the UC schools - I was the one who brought that system up.

When you responded about USC a) being a UC school and b) being well known for athletics, not academics I knew you had no clue what you were talking about.

Others have come in with actual research backing their claims - where's yours? I imagine you're having trouble finding it.

So, again I say - while trying to insult, all you've managed to do is make yourself look uneducated.

I'm sure he's trying....but he's having no luck finding anything that will back up his ridiculous claims. He's probably still confused after learning that USC isn't a state school.

Any minute now he's going to come here claiming to be a bad ass from one of the Max Planck Institutes. He probably has a Nobel prize sitting next to his Mac.

Keep em high, enjoy college, but don't stress over GPA. It will help get you into a grad program, but in the real world, few care. I graduated with honors, and you know, no one seems to give a rip...

What you say makes sense and when the OP finishes school with a less than 4.0 GPA, but still a very high GPA, he will probably quote you and take it as "his" grain of wisdom. :)

When many graduate programs in many fields won't likely yield any sort of increase in income (including mine), it's really crazy when somebody who graduates with honors in an undergraduate program think that anybody in the real world who cuts the checks will care.

Sometimes getting the great grades and then finding out in most cases that it doesn't translate to anything in the real world is the best way one can learn. Believing stupid fallacies and then having them backfire leads to real wisdom, and wisdom is a lot better than book learning.

I wish the OP the best and hopefully he will have learned something from what the overwhelming consensus seems to be.

I have been trying to hold a 4.0 through college...missed it my first 2 semesters due to hard math classes but got Bs in both of them. Last 2 semesters I have gotten 4.0s. Literally just got my grades this semester and I got a 3.93...because of a 1 credit tennis/table tennis class. I get As in Engineering Economics(With one of the worst teachers at the school), Quality Assurance(With one of the worst teachers at the school), Fluid Power, and Computed Integrated Manufacturing...but a 1 credit fitness class destroys it.

Sorry for my rant, but I am pissed to say the least. A class that has nothing to do with my major or how I do in my field is affecting my GPA. She actually tried to tell us that knowing how to play tennis would help us get a job...I will bet that no one plays tennis in my field, if anyone does its very few.

You do realize the difference between a 3.9 and 4.0 is nil right? At this point you are already a Summa Cum Laude. Also, a vast majority (if not all) of jobs out there (even recruiters) could care less of your GPA. All you really need to do is show you can do the stuff your degree states and do it diligently.
