Mini display issues and 50" Plasma

Just took delivery for a new Pioneer 5060 plasma tv. It is absolutely awesome. I plugged in my 1.25GHZ PowerBook DVI to the TV's VGA. Set the res and got a perfect image with no overscan issues. And very bright. I am all set to order a Mini to leave conneced to my TV as a media server, but I am now just reading here about the diplay issues you guys have mentioned (dim VGA etc). Am I crazy to think about running the mini through my plasma. The Powerbook seems to do it effortlessly and it also as only 64mb of Vid RAM. ??

I really think I will get the new updated model, and if I don't oh well, at least the RAM was cheaper ;)

You'll have to keep us updated as to what machine you actual take delivery of.

Good luck... ;)

this is day 13 of 14 day return period..... i have to decide today whether to return my mac mini :(

Financially i should send it back and get the latest spec whenever its released but i really cant be bothered to reformat my drive, telephone apple returns, get it collected, wait for refund, WAIT FOR NEW MAC MINI etc.....

Im in the UK so i reckon itll be alittle longer before we see any 1.5 machines.... but i might be wrong as they must be sourced from the same location and its just a case of stock.

Apathy..... what a wonderful thing....

Its my second mac that im using for donkey work so i really cant bothered to change it. When i brought it it did what i wanted it to do so its just the future resale price that im considering. Id only really benefit from is the dual layer 8 x super drive, but i only do monthly backups on it so 20 mins burning or 5 mins dont matter much, its not a critical.

Have i justified my decision not to send it back :)

However, if they announce today ill be on the phone :D

Here's some news that may help you make a decision ;)

I ordered a bog-standard SD Mac on 21st September - the day before I read about the rumours of an upgrade :(. It arrived three weeks later (yesterday)!

I had hoped that the delay mean that the mini would be from the new stock but according to the serial number - YM531xxxxxxx - it's an August build and before the 535 and after that signifies the upgraded models. So I didn't even bother unpacking it and have left it in the unopened delivery box.

This morning I phoned the Apple Store (UK) to get a Return Material Authorisation (RMA) number so that I could return it. I was immediately offered a £50 refund if I agreed to keep it. I got the impression that Apple are about to discount the EOL rev B minis and that the announcement of the new models is imminent. Of course, this was not actuall said just my reading between the lines of the reaction I got to my 'predicament'

I decided to decline the offer of the £50 refund since I'd rather have an upgraded mini.

Incidentally(!) the £40 'restocking/pickup' fee was waived too - without me asking!! Dunno if this was because of the delay in delivery of the mini - that's another story - and/or the fact I'd not even opened the box and/or the fact that delivery took place on the day that Apple sales staff have been briefed on the new products but it was an unexpected, and welcome, offer ;). Well done Apple.

So, the upshot is that you should phone today and see what they say. If nothing else you may get a refund in lieu of returning the machine which would help sweeten a decision to keep it.

I'm also kind of pissed and tired of waiting for the official mac mini announcements from apple, just found this on macosxrumors.com

"Internal meeting schedule hints at further product releases

Sources that can be qualified as reliable told MacosXrumors that although there have been many announcements yesterday, Apple is set to release another set of products as soon as next week.

One of the sources gave us good reason to believe this information is true by pointing out that on Saturday 9 (yes, Saturday), Apple had a meeting related to the October 12th announcements, with staff involved in Apple’s retail division. Attendees have also been informed that there is another meeting planed for Saturday the 15th.

The source also explained that a few days before a major product announcement, a certain number of Apple Store staff members usually have a meeting with a briefing on forthcoming products although few details on the new products are given to them.

Although Apple did not explicitly tell its employees that this second meeting was related to another wave of product releases, speculation has already started among staff members.

If there is no misinterpretation, then the two meetings’ schedule with employees involved in Apple’s retail division can be considered as facts. However, at this point, we can’t be sure if the second meeting really has to do with imminent product releases.

PowerMac, and PowerBook updates are still expected to be released soon, while the Mac mini’s update remains to be made official, although Apple has silently started shipping updated Mac minis to customers."

Hope that helps tide people over

Darn it! Sorry Yaja123, I'd overlooked the fact that your 14-day period expired yesterday! Perhaps my news will be of benefit to others though.

Hmmm.. That is interesting news. I should get my mini sometime between Tuesday and Friday, so if the announcement comes Tuesday and my mini arrives Friday and for some crazy reason I do not get the updated mini am I right to assume that Apple may do something about it (offer to take it back for an upgraded mini, give me a discount, etc) even though it is BTO?

Again, I cannot imagine getting an older mini on or after Tuesday if others are already getting the new one and it is announced.

Time will tell....
