I think there are issues behind the scenes with Navi. If you go outside of the Mac world, the 5700 series has had a lot of complaints leveled against it, where some cards work just fine, others are just a mess. Also, AMD didn't really fill out a product stack with the 5000 series, they are moving on to 6000 before the year is up. That tells me Navi was rushed out and RDNA2 cards might be better.

I had no issues with my own 5700XT that I had, but I've heard a lot of stories about others not being so lucky. Maybe it's an issue with the way the card manages thermals, as there can be GPU hotspots over 90C. Maybe the design was too aggressive, or AMD push the GPUs to their limits in order to be more competitive with NVIDIA.

Maybe you're right. But at least the ”some users might experience a black screen when gaming” is no longer listed under the Known Issue for the latest Windows 10 driver patch notes. Instead they have this under Fixed Issues:

  • A black screen, system crash or TDR may occur while gaming when performing task switches, enabling performance metrics overlay, or having video content/web browsers open on secondary displays on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products system configurations.

Wondering why the iMacs with the issue deserve a front page post. But the Mac Pro also riddled with these issues doesn’t. And doesn’t even get a mention.

As far as I know the Mac Pro does not have this issue at all. (but maybe it does with the WX5700; can you provide some links?)

My MacPro has been super solid; although I opted for the base 580x since I wanted to wait for Big Navi. Been running Folding @ home 24/7 maximum CPU usage, while also doing everything else like editing, compressions, etc etc. Even with folding running it still hammers through stuff with no issues.

About the only "add on" thing I did was install TG Pro since my belief is that Apple's fan management is too conservative; with the settings I have in place with TG Pro it keeps everything much cooler and also mostly noiseless.

Yup, it’s the w5700x which is riddled with issues pertaining for many to do with sleeping, and usage after the system has been asleep.

It does, a lot of people having issues.

Mac Pro appears to have myriad issues with the WX5700. One current theory being that they revolve around DSC.

IDK, running MP 28 core with Vega II and 0 issues. I believe it's AMD's 5700, which appears to not be ready for primetime and was kicked out the door without adequate testing. Vega II is over-priced for what it does, but it's also rock solid and extremely stable (of course it lacks DSC). Within context of MP pricing, it's another drop in the bucket and you can ultimately give up and replace it with a video card that works. Within context of new iMac, if you didn't return your shiny new AIO pretty fast, then you're kinda stuck with it and I'd be pretty angry.

At the same time, if it's both Mac Pro and new iMac with problems utilizing 5700, then perhaps the problem can be fixed via software updates, because thermal constraints and inadequate cooling are not on list of MP's problems (skimming threads many posts posit this is the iMac 5700 issue).

Good luck and may the force be with you. Perhaps everybody will get $500, 3 years from now once class action lawsuit is resolved  ("Whoops, sorry about that!")

Thanks for the links and info; I was unaware of the issues with the W5700X and the Mac Pro; glad I did not get one. Wonder if the W5500X has the same problems.

I have never been a fan of the AIOs; hence the hackintosh route until something actually decent was released (even though it is overpriced.)

I see the 2011 MacBook Pro issues all over again: Apple will deny everything for years, then will act only when pressured by a class action suit, and finally offer a “too little, too late” warranty extension that doesn't address the root cause, immediately followed by declaring the model “vintage”.

Am I resentful about how they handled my MBP 2011 issues? You bet I am and I’ll never ever forget it.

What issues? I've had my 16" MBP since early February and I use it extensively as I edit in FCP X weekly. Not a single problem.

Some people are having "issues" (it's not really an issue as the laptop still works up to spec) of the AMD GPU using too much power when a monitor is connected, and the fans speed up to 3K+ RPM making it really loud

Glitches no, just a yellow line, always there.
Out of the box iMac 2020 sept 17 with radeon 5700XT and also a free split screen.

Update out now, 10.15.7; supposed fix. Any iMac owners care to comment whether it fixes it?

Just updated and still GPU memory is always full. Also sometimes I noticed the Finder window corners have a glitch.

So the helpfull people from the Apple store (Online) don't believe there is anything wrong with the Imac
and they refuse replacement. They don't even bother to let UPS pick mine up to examine it.
This last week i've spend more time with the "specialists" on the phone than with my own family.
Thats the service you get nowadays from a company that earns billions but doesn't even take time to help their consumers.Or maybe its just the people behind the phone....

Not to sound insensitive, but the Sims 4 was released for macOS 10.11.x; I am suspecting that it is having an OS version beyond High Sierra, tons of stuff changed from High Sierra to Mojave; and even more to Catalina.

Games on the Mac are not known to be updated in a timely fashion unless they are specific App Store games. I pretty much gave up trying to game on Macs. Just boot camp it or get a Windows rig to game.

I just bought another Mac for my stable of machines I use in my video business. I now have this machine:
62690687626__AB892138-19B0-4132-8F4D-830DE1B2FDE2.jpeg

The 5500xt also has issues. I'm experiencing dropped frames when running iMovie or OBS and even when the recording from the Quicktime app. The screen, when just showing the desktop, you can see the icons studder as they bounce in the dock. So disappointed in Apple these days. Any recommendations on how to pressure Apple to make good on these issues? If only a couple of us complain there will be only marginal movement on Apple's part, but if we all step up, things will go much more rapidly. I use my machine in a professional manner and I'm just completely losing faith in Apple's ability to create what used to be terrific machines. I don't want to be a beta tester for their experiments. The new in house processors, Apple Silicon, will create machines that are a nightmare I'm sure.

My only suggestion for now would be to try to run geekbench and cinebench and see if you get similar scores to your machine’s caliber compared from the already posted ones to clear out a faulty machine. Besides that, hopefully upcoming software updates could fix some of those.
I got a 2020 with the 5700XT one (64GB RAM, 8-core, 2TB one) and I haven’t had any issues.
The only thing that I have seen happening: I think when time machine is backing up and requires a cleanup, it brings the system down to a halt, like a nasty halt. I usually have dozens of apps open (photoshop, after effects, substance designer, unity, Xcode, all the chats suite teams-zoom-fbmessenger-whatsapp-iMessages-others, safari with 60+ tabs, parallels, etc) and just rocket by anything, always snappy... however, time machine man, sometimes I tell ya.
Granted, I have it running on wifi on an 6+ years old AirTimeCapsule... I know, savage, but hey it works

I believe it's the people behind the people behind the phone. I spent 2 hours ont he phone and all the person on the other end could do was follow a book of "tries", to include erase the hard drive and reinstall the system. That was going to take about 45 more minutes we ended the conversation and I called back when the reinstall (as I suspected) didn't help. Waiting to talk to them again for the next step. I'm playing the game to get to my end (I want a system that works properly), but I'm already getting to my wit's end. You are right to infer the service Apple provides is short of nothing.
