All new iPhone SIM trays are etched with a phone’s IMEI - understandable why they’d want to replace the entire device.

To add an update to this: just for the hell of it, I decided to search eBay for 12 Pro SIM card trays, and to my shock (maybe I shouldn't have been shocked) there is a seller in China selling what is claimed to be OEM "open box" SIM card trays for the 12 Pro. They were only like $6 bucks and change plus shipping. It came to a little over $10, so I thought, why not? I'll take a chance. He had both dual and single SIM card trays, I guessed the US iPhone uses the single since we have E-SIM.

It's coming on a slow boat from China, so it'll be awhile before it gets here.

I am aware that the original SIM card tray has the IMEI etched into it, so I'm going to hang on to it in case I ever need to take the phone to Apple for service.

When will you be sharing photos? I am so curious at this point to actually see the scratches.

May I ask, why don’t you pop out the one right now and take a photo? Your phone will operate without a SIM.

Just for you, I tried to do that. I am a terrible photographer and only two of the pics show anything at all.

The pics are only showing what looks like nicks, but under a magnifying glass there are vertical scratches visible.

I must say, can you imagine going to an Apple store and complaining about this? I wonder if the Genius would be able to see it under the store lights and I would feel very embarrassed.

How so? Is the PVD coating supposed to be more resistant?

You said it came that way right out of the box. That’s bizarre. Mine is also Graphite and the tray doesn’t have any marks like that.

S**t happens. If I hadn't looked at it with a magnifying glass, I may never have noticed.

If it was me I would want a replacement lol, I am a bit funny like that when it’s new and with the price of these phones, but it’s understandable that you decided to live with it as it is a minor imperfection after all

So I contacted Apple about this, and the advisor told me that the only thing they could do is exchange the whole phone. They set up an appointment at my local Apple Store.

After looking over the phone again, I decided to cancel the appointment. The scratches on the tray are tiny and need magnification to see and it's just not worth playing the lottery on another phone. The screen is really good on this phone, not yellow at all like some people are complaining about.

I have my 1 year rings streak on my Apple Watch coming up on the 13th, and I want to reach at least a year. I don't want to chance something to go wrong with that with changing to another phone.

I guess I'm not OCD, just OCD-adjacent, lol.
eBay will have them for sure. I wonder if the space gray from the 11 fits.

Personally, it would bug me more to have a cheap third party tray than a marked original tray. I’d probably also replace the whole thing

The one I ordered was claimed to be OEM and the seller had good feedback, so I"ll see.

Marks that you need a magnifying glass to properly see.. I wonder if Apple fans are this OCD about everything else they purchase? Seems exhausting!

It's enough to bug me on a $1300 phone, but at the same time I recognize that for me it's not enough to exchange. Plus, it's bad for the environment to be exchanging for such a minor defect.

My solution was to buy a replacement SIM tray-- if that works, fine. If not, I'll live with it.

Do you also buy a new car and go over with it with a magnifying glass?

I’ve seen posts on here of people buying new phones and then inspecting it with a torch, nothing is perfect no matter how much you pay.

Look at how much people pay for brand new houses and those aren’t perfect either.

Thank you, you're just making me feel better about keeping it and not worrying about it.

What did you do at the end? Same thing happened to me, but I’m just gonna live with it.

I have a SIM tray on order from an ebay seller in China. It's arrived in the US finally, so I'm waiting on it. Depending on the quality of what I receive (the thing only cost about $6), I'll use that, as long as it looks identical (without the scratches) to the original.

The only problem I can see is that the original has the IMEI of the phone etched into it, so I'm going to hang on to it in case I need to take the phone in for service.

I read that the colour might be different. Mine is a small scratch, barely noticeable and I don’t know what it bothers me so much.

These are very expensive phones, so it's understandable that it might bother you. There's also the element of, "why me?" So many people (the majority) got their phones without this problem.

If it really bothers you and you're still in the return period, I would exchange it. Like I mentioned before, I was coming up on the 1 year anniversary of closing all my rings on my Apple Watch and I didn't want to break my streak by being without a phone (I had already sent my old phone in as a trade-in).

As an update to this, I decided to try a local AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider). They were able to order a replacement tray for me and they were puzzled that the Apple rep over Chat said the entire device would have to be replaced. They (the AASP) told me that was the one thing they could not do.

They said the tray would come in a few days and it is a genuine Apple part. They're not charging me anything, either.
