I (and many friends/family/coworkers) use either or both OSes, and never give it a second thought.. Always amuses me when I see this blue/green anxiety posted online by Android OEMs and alike.

Yes, this! Same with people who buy subcompact electric vehicles and then ask their friend with an SUV to help them move. You knew what you were signing up for and now are mad that this obvious consequence to your actions exists?
Ugh, moving?

Besides, I don't ask my friends with pickups to help since I know most of them would **** my furniture up.

What economic incentive does Apple have to implement RCS? Samsung and Google have a big economic incentive for Apple to help them out with RCS.
Not everything is about economic benefit. That is how businesses function, yes, but as consumers, why should we also buy into that logic? I guess it’s different if you’re a big investor, though.

The way I see it, since Apple cares about privacy, they should put their money where their mouth is and stop defaulting green messages to SMS/MMS. If they don’t think RCS is the answer, come up with something better and still keep the iMessage extras exclusive. SMS/MMS really aren’t secure and it’s not realistic to expect that everyone on this planet should own an iPhone, as much as I love them and think they’re better for me personally.

it's more confusing. Verizon can decide to implement video chat but Tmobile implements a different RCS which doesn't include video chat. and who hosts a group video call (which doesn't even exist in RCS spec last I checked)?

right now you can FaceTime with apple and Android. or they can move to Telegram/WhatsApp. adopting RCS means user must learn if XYZ user supports ABC feature which is dependent on the carrier. Google can provide a fallback option but that gets even more complicated.
I suppose it's similar to USB-C where not one cable works the same as another and to a consumer; it's very confusing.

As for FaceTime with Android, I feel like that was poorly implemented. A FaceTime app for Android would have made more sense than a webpage. Additionally, same with Windows. They have Apple Music for all those devices. They could just make a FaceTime app.

I suppose my dream for the iOS Messages app is to work similar to the Files app. Download third party apps and let them integrate with the default app (OneDrive or Google Drive both being integrated with Files).

I have an amazingly stupid question, why does Samsung even care? I mean aside from the bubble color, and the occasional group chat in Messages, it's not like Android users can't text Apple users. I mean, half of my friends are on various flavor of Android, and we text just fine.
I suppose the definition of "just fine" varies from person to person. Sending a video from iPhone to an Android is far from "just fine". Reactions and replies that are very handy in large groups are far from "just fine". Groups in general are far from "just fine".

If Google/Samsung were serious, perhaps they’d tone down the consumer ads and start co-developing a mutually accepted alternative. Matter is a great example of how an alliance can be built between global competitors (Google, Apple, Amazon, etc).

Apple has zero incentive to switch to a protocol developed by Google. The solution is simple: build a new one.

That said, I think Tim Cook is right when he says it’s a low priority and iPhone users aren’t asking for it.

I know this isn’t really the point here but I just want to say that this is the most embarrassing version of one of these ads I’ve ever seen. Was it made for the younger side of gen z who grew up on TextingStory?? Even they would find this cringe…

If I send a message and the recipient is green you can bet your $5 shoe that person is off my contact list. I don't associate with non-apple users via text. You're not smart enough to use Signal or even that garbage called WhatsApp then bye. It's really that simple.

I really don’t understand these ads. Apple isn’t going to care about them at all, and if anything Samsung/Google is just pointing out an annoyance of using their product 🤷‍♂️
Shhhhhhhhh, don't point out the obvious. Google doesn't understand that this feminine passive aggressive strategy is really just pointing out a huge drawback to their product. And also that they're passive aggressive and desperate.

I'm all for iMessage/FaceTime natively on android. this makes the most sense to me. a gateway for android users to experience apple stuff just like what apple did with iTunes on windows when it was good.

Because the bubble-color dichotomy is an important reason for some people to buy Apple instead of Samsung.
Is it tho? I mean, Samsung outsells Apple (by around 13% in 2022), I doubt huge percentages of iPhone buyers are buying them for the color of the bubbles.

But, hey, I've been wrong before.

It's political reasons if you did not already notice that.

Samsung today joined Google in attempting to convince Apple to adopt the Rich Communication Services or RCS messaging standard that Google has been pushing.

In a short ad that's a riff on Romeo and Juliet, Samsung features two smartphone interfaces texting each other. "Juliet" is the iPhone in the metaphor and her parents (aka Apple) won't allow for the adoption of RCS. "What did green ever do to them? We're bubbles too," laments the "Romeo" Android smartphone. "And literally everyone wants us to be together. Ugh," writes Juliet.

It's ultimately a bit of a confusing ad, but Samsung makes it clear with the title of the video: "Green bubbles and blue bubbles want to be together." Samsung also includes the "Help Apple #GetTheMessage" tagline and hashtag that Google has been using for its RCS campaign.

Google has been hounding Apple about adopting RCS for several years now using ads, billboards, websites, social media campaigns, and more, but Apple has refused.

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a communication protocol designed by and adopted by Google. Google has been pushing Apple to implement support for RCS, but Apple devices continue to support the older SMS protocol. Google claims that Apple is responsible for all the issues that Android and iPhone users have texting one another, including lack of encryption, broken group chats, pixelated pictures and videos, and the green bubbles.

Apple CEO Tim Cook in September 2022 said that RCS is not a priority for Apple and that it is not a feature that iPhone users are asking for.

Point of clarification here, Google did not design RCS. It was supposed to be a standard but Google is the main one pushing for it after the network cartel figured out they couldn’t make money on it.

I just enjoy how mad it makes people who buy an Android.

It’s like people who buy a massive SUV and then complain about gas prices. You knew what you were signing up for and now are mad that this obvious consequence to your actions exists?
No one i know with an android is bothered by this. They don’t even know what they’re missing… but it annoys hell out of me when i can’t send them a text from my house cus the cell signal is bad and i can’t use Wi-Fi to message them… or send them stickers or decent quality photos/video…

here is what i understand from this saga.
Apple customers use other chat applications when texting people who doesn't own iPhone/Mac.
Google is not getting that data.
So Google is forcing Apple to use RCS so that people will use RCS to text iPhone/Mac/Android users.
then very few people will use third party texting apps and Google can get all the data (or Meta data if it is end to end encrypted).

So what is Apple gaining from this ?
Apple could set up their own RCS servers or work with others to come up with a solution where data doesn’t get sent to Google. That said, Google’s implementation (which isn’t the only one out there) provides E2E encryption by default.

If you have an issue with RCS, shouldn’t you have way more of an issue with plain text messages and videos being visible to our carriers?

Edit: got it, you like your carrier seeing your plain text messages. Not saying RCS is THE answer, I’m fine with the messages staying green, too, even though it’s petty, but shouldn’t we be pushing for encryption and better standards everywhere?

IF you think its not better than regular SMS then you have no idea what you're talking about.
This is what I thought but it is a valid point that SMS/MMS is universal while RCS has various implementations by various companies including Google, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

I’ve actually had success introducing my friend group and family to signal, esp as some of them switched to android where we were previously all iPhone. They adopted quickly and are happy to leave the green bubble struggle in the past. I highly recommend it! The app is very well made!

Realistically, especially outside the US, this is a non issue as everyone defaults to WhatsApp
I have all my Android friends (and family) on Telegram and everything is fine.
