I support GreenPeace All the way!

So we can all assume you also support their haphazard attempts to save the environment, and the fact that they are indeed an incongruent entity with logic, reason, and good taste. They target apple, knowing full well other manufacturers have a generous share of toxic substances in their products (spare us the propeganda greenpeace, we know what LCD's and CRT screens contain).

Greenpeace is the sort that would assume a factory is producing an alarming amount of toxic waste if they happen to spot a dead bird on the roof of the building.

I think someone was right when they pointed out that Apple was attacked because Green Peace believed that we as Mac lovers are all tree hugging hippies. I think this thread alone put an end to that train of thought.
This has NOTHING to do with environmentalism, president Bush, or freedom of speech. It has to do with a the organizers of a privately held event kicking out an attendee for violating the terms it had set. As the organizer and funder of the event it had every right to kick out anyone it saw fit for any reason. If green peace was making it slightly uncomfortable for Apples other attendees then they are very justified in their reaction.

What, exactly, is there to be proud of? Taking an uninformed or misguided stand is not something to trumpet.

As an environmentalist I am extremely pissed at Greenpeace and all the other fear mongerers out there that spread lies and hyperbole in order to "force" people to believe in their righteous campaigns.

As someone working in the marketing industry it pains me to see such useless posturing which, in the end, may win over a few fanatics but, most importantly, alienates the general public.

Actually making an impact on the environment would not be terribly difficult if groups like Greenpeace weren't putting off the average person from having a proper discussion on the issues that could actually make a difference. I'm talking about energy conservation over, say, inconsequential amounts of BFRs.

I had to have a good laugh following the greenpeace links from the macrumors article.

* the "making waves" site had a pic and an article stating "our volunteers outside weere handing out real organic green apples". Only thing is the apples in the picture are red!

*what are greenpeace more upset about...? the fact that there are tonnes of electronic waste in a garbage dump? or the fact that there are hundreds of poor and underpriviledged kids running around the dump collecting the waste in order to survive? I am sure that by fixing Apple's problems they will remove these kids from the dump! What is supposed to be in a garbage dump....the waste or the scavaging kids?

relace the battery

They do build in obsolescence into the ipod as you can't replace the battery (easily). It does become a disposable item, although a pricey one at that. I do love the ipod (even though I don't own one) but this puts me off to the point where I just can't go through with actually buying one. My experience with rechargeable batteries in mobile phones and lap top isn't good.

Actually replacing the battery is a piece of cake with the tool. My kids all have a 3g version and I replaced all the batteries(4) Cost $26 each.

They handed out leaflets and were ejected because no one's ever allowed to talk about the downsides of our throwaway consumer-trinket technojunk culture without being told to shut up.

Sad to see so many people now happy to have people's free speech stamped all over. No wonder Bush can dismantle the Bill of Rights and his lapdog Blair can swiftly remove centruries-old liberties with barely a whisper. I agree with Greenpeace's concerns. Vast toxic waste dumps with no proper processing are springing up across China.

If some fat overfed Westerner's kids had to live and play near a site like that they'd be up in arms! But, no, let's pretend the problems are somehow 'made up' by 'subversives' and need stamping out with the jackboots.

I didn't read every post, but the above nicely sums up my take on it. The reference to half-naked women at car shows is a stroke of genius. I mean, kids go to such shows. Greenpeace handing out leaflets, though, is an affront to mature businessmen.

But Greenpeace aren't going to make a change at Apple. Only the consumers are going to do that. Not by forming a negative opinion about Apple's business practices/production methods but by not buying their products. Anyone here willing? Thought not. Me neither. Only the powers of the marketplace are going to force a powerful, important company to invest in change, and those powers need to be manifested as more than opinions.

And sorry if this has been mentioned already, but in the picture on the GP site they're holding red apples, not green. Isn't that, like, stupid?

Actually, it's not what they stand for that's the problem. the problem is their methods. They grandstand and make big a big stink, which completely destroys their credibility. im all for better components, but id never associate myself with those fruits.

Yes, when you are a vendor at a show there are strict rules. It's in the contract. If you purchase a booth you have to stay in that booth, period. Booths are available on first come first serve basis usually with returning vendors getting the right of first refusal for booths they have held previously. The ends and large booths near foot traffic are more expensive and they command a higher price. Some shows, fewer today than before, allow for "cigarette girls" or "strollers" but the vendor pays for this as they would for any other perks—and they are not cheap. They are generally given a specific time period in which they may walk the floor (if in costume they need a chaperone). They are not allowed to transact business but hand out "freebies". According to the story Greenpeace only signed up for a booth. All contracts I have seen say you'll get thrown out if you don't obey the rules.

The only free place left in our Fascist dictatorship country where we can't roam the streets after curfew and cellular phones and other internet resources have been shut down. Hail Macrumors for fighting the oppression and risking life and limb so other freedom fighters like "Jobsrules" can dissent against President Bush in the only venue still open after all other forms of protest ceased after the 2000 election...

By the way, I am not sure if you've noticed or not, but their actually still are protests in the United States. It's a basic Right that hasn't been taken away under the Bush administration. We have freedom of the press, who largely dislike the President: e.i. Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews, George Stephanopolous, Wolf Blitzer...

We have freedom of speech, albeit, apparently only here in the Macforums, we have freedom to 'peaceably' assemble, as stated in the Bill of Rights, freedom of religion, right to keep and bare arms... We don't have soldiers quartering in homes... we don't yet have to testify against ourselves in a court of law.

I guess I'm at a loss for what rights we have actually lost under the Bush Presidency... Not to mention what on earth it has to do with Greenpeace have trouble agreeing and adhering to rules and standards of conduct.

That's so patronising. Are you saying that Britain has never had a gun culture or just you narrow experience of the world leads you to believe this to be the case? Either way, you seem to have missed the not so gradual slide of Great Britain into a cowering corner of the United States of Europe.

There are two ways of law. Do what you like until a so called democracy decides what is against the law - or - Everything is against the law until a so called democracy decides what isn't illegal.

The UK used to have the former (something to do with the magna carte🙄) and now we are headed in the other direction where small groups of noisy fascists (of all political persuasion) seem to think it's ok to bypass our once great legal and government system and force changes with who shouts loudest television media.

To me it's that same dynamic that allows Greenpeace to fake and replace information with their own doctored information and spin.

I'm sick of the way people think it's ok to 'skip around' the few basic but important rules that once held us altogether. It's not enough to be doing it in the name of a so called 'good cause'.
