I am confused as to why something as small and low power as the Apple Watch, needs a POWERHOUSE of another iOS device to keep the watch running?

The paired iOS device needs to run the "watch settings" app to communicate with the watch, load apps (and possibly music and photos) onto the watch, etc.

I think focusfocus is speculating that only the latest iOS will have these watch control functions, and the iPod touch with the A5 chip is not powerful enough (that is, the chip isn't advanced enough) to run the latest iOS.

Come to think of it, the iOS device also needs the latest Bluetooth protocol to communicate with the watch. Can't remember if the iPod touch has that or not.

The Apple watch also relies on the iphone for internet service, ipod touch won't be supplying that.

Just thought of this one... how about using the NFC feature to let you unlock your car door as you put your hand near the handle?

Like an 1st gen Apple product, the 2nd will fix a lot of the limitations of the 1st.

Before everyone quotes me the "every generation is better than the last" I am aware of this, but compare the improvements Apple makes from 1st gen to 2nd its pretty drastic in feature set. I think this is strategic by Apple, I bet they are already working on the 2nd and have been for awhile.

The second gen iPhone (3G) would like to have a word with you. The 3G had the same internals as the original iPhone but added a 3G radio and a plastic shell. Having the 3G radio got it an additional iOS upgrade too.

Historically, Apple's 2nd Gen products have always been marginal improvements. Even dating as far as the 80s with the original Macs. In fact, off the top of my head only two second gen Apple products ever made a big jump spec wise from their predecessor: iPad 2 and Apple ][. But I digress.

Anyway getting back to modern day tech, iPhone and iPod touch were the same way: 2nd gen used the last gen internals inside a new case and 1 extra 'bell' (iPod got a speaker and iPhone got a 3G radio). iPod had no internal differences except Gen 2 had bigger hard drives and a touch scroll wheel (Click Wheel hadn't been invented yet). iPad 2 was a huge departure from the original. It's hard to tell which way Apple will go with Watch. Considering though every time they have come out with something fresh and new (iPod, iPhone) gen 2 was just a slight bump and external redesign, I'd say the same thing will happen with the Watch.

The NFC chip is off limits to 3ed party developer.

Idk why but everything I read something is off to third party devs (like Touch ID in iOS 7) a cartoon pops into my head with a security guard standing at a secure door and a dev coming and trying to open the door just to get their hand slapped without the guard ever looking at them. I'm weird lol.

I am not expecting many big surprises that we do not know but in the spirit of the thread haha, I want to see and try on an AW asap - I mean maybe after the media event or Tuesday. :D.

Tim Cook: You can start pre-ordering the AW in a little bit. *Looking at all his immediate directs and many Apple employees in the building* Okay, guys, please notify them or tell them to turn it on - the pre-ordering system now for shipping on April 03. *Then many Apple executives and employees will be looking or fiddling on their AWs then some will be whipping out their iPhones, while the non Apple people standing and cheering wildly. Lol*

Starting tomorrow, you can also go to the Apple Stores so you could see and try them on in-person.

Yeah, I want to see and try it asap and stop checking what is going on here. This forum will become like the iPhone forum after the media event. :D

Meanwhile, after the AW etc reveal, there will be a big musical production like an iTunes Festival to be hosted by Zane Lowe with live performances by Muse debuting the lead single of their upcoming new album and other bands close to Zane, Jimmy and Dr. Dre.

----------

An additional or many iterations / clones of Milanese loop / collection / bands reveal will be enough for me, lol.

I think the biggest shock will be the price of the stainless steel model. Most won't be buying the Edition but will be watching to see the price difference between Sport and SS. I know I will be watching for that and afterwards will determine if I will be making any compromises or just getting the SS,classic leather band, link bracelet, black sport band, and maybe even Milanese at a later date.

I'm in the camp of: The surprise will be that there is no surprise.
Sure, there will be more details of price, battery life, etc. But nothing *new* re: accessories or surprise features.

Surprise, delusion, whatever you want to call it.....One more thing, new version of the Apple TV, with an App Store. So not only were developers invited for watch development but Apple TV development.

The watch is the remote, new model only Apple TV, hardly uses any of the watch battery.

Could happen:D we know HBO will launch it's cable free version in April, so why not?

It's a solid 1% chance, OK it's a just a dream:(, but man that would be a surprise.

The biggest shock: a gold link bracelet for the watch edition. That would easily cost $15k.

A big surprise for some will be the price of the steel watch. People think it will start at $4-500, but i think it will be closer to 1k.
Think about it, nobody will buy the sport watch with aluminium case and cheap rubber band when they can get a steel one with sapphire crystal for $150 more. :)
