Sorry, newbie here, maybe I wasn't clear, I'm copying a file from within my Windows PC and pasting across network share to Mac so in essence my Windows PC will be writing the file to my HPF formatted Mac hard drive.

Works the same way except in reverse there should be no problems at all. Never heard of this.

I did everything but I can get it to work I keep getting an error. I have a Windows Vista machine that has a lot of my files on. I can connect to my xp machine fine but the Vista I keep getting an error. I keep getting: The Alias "computers user name" could not be opened because the original item cannot be found. I enabled everything on my vista machine and mac machine but nothing. Oddly enough I had no problem getting my Vista machine to connect to my OS X machine. So any ideas?

Anyone? I been searching and googling for a long time and all I find it how to connect vista to mac. I want to connect my mac to my vista machine but no go. Please?

When you try to connect to the PC from the Mac try this:

For the username don't just enter your Windows Vista username and password. Enter for your username the Windows Vista machines IP address\Username.

Something like:

Username: 192.168.1.2\MyVistaAccount
Password: MyVistaPassword

Do the same when you're connecting the other way round, but using the Macs IP address and credentials.

Let us know how you get on.

Keeps asking me for a password and every time I put the password in it says its wrong. odd.

Any ideas? When I try to connect from GO, connect to a server from Finder it says wrong password. From the network icon and what not I get The Alias "computers user name" could not be opened because the original item cannot be found. Please.

Can't fix alias...can't connect Mac os 10.4.9 to local network.

help!.
I read Ed's post about settings on the PC. I checked the event viewer system log, and did not see any errors with Srv as source. Couldn't find the error you were talking about. So is this the problem solution I need?

I can PING the other computers and printers and external hard drive from the Mac. I can go out to the internet, and get mail.
I can connect from the other computers (windows XP) to my mac and transfer files without any problem.

BUt every time I try to connect from the Mac G4 I get the "can't open alias because original item can't be found" error. When I go to "fix the alias" I can't access the network...it's grayed out.

What do I do now? I spent the better part of today with a tech from apple and he couldn't figure out what was wrong. All settings at my end were correct.

I just upgraded to 10.4.9 TIger.
It all worked just fine when I had 10.3.9.
I'm sorry I upgraded.

Did you read this port (linked to from my original post). It may be applicable for Vista as well as XP.

fix alias problem in Os X 10.4.9

We did the tip given by EWTheckman "another solution" for the IPRstacksize.
Had to create the entry.

Raised it to 15, then 18. Still didn't work.

We even plugged the external hard drive into the ethernet bridge that my Mac is connected to. Still can't access the external, or any other windows computer.

Our computers have names with have hyphens in them.. I read somewhere that might be a problem.

Also, I created an account on the PC with the same name as my Mac's computer and password....still no success.

I am ready to trash TIGER, if I can't get this figured out.

Any more suggestions?

The Alias "computer name" could not be opened

I am having trouble with "The alias "<shared folder>" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." when I try to connect to my PC from my imac. I have 2 PC's and 1 mac networked through a linksys router (hardwired). One of my PC's connects to the mac seamlessly and the mac connects to it as well. The other PC can connect to the mac but the mac cannot connect to the PC. The one that works has XP Home and the one that doesn't has XP Professional but it is not running as a server.

The XP Pro PC shows up on the network in Finder but when I try to connect it gives me the above message. I have tried to connect using Apple K using the ip address/server name and every conceivable combination but nothing works. I have tried changing the network name, the share names etc. nothing!

I have tried every single thing I could find through searches and still no go.

Anyone???

Connecting to Vista from OSX

Hey guys,

My first post here. I've been reading up on how to connect to my shared files on my vista machine after I migrated from XP, which was really simple. It's pretty simple to Vista as well. There are two ways to make this work; In Vista you need to either create a new user account with password or turn off password protected sharing. Creating an account consists of going to the control panel -> User Accounts -> Manage Another account -> Create a new account -> set password. By default, Vista has password protected sharing enabled. In OSX go Network -> "User name" -> Connect -> Enter the account name and password you just created in Vista.

The other method, of course is to turn off Password protected sharing altogether. To do this go, start orb -> Network -> Network and sharing center -> Password Protected Sharing -> Off Now you will be able to log on with any username and no password.

That's it, I don't know if this is common knowledge but it's how I was able to access my shared files on Vista from OSX.

Oh yea, you will have to change the network security option to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" for you to gain access to shared files.

mac newb here.

Whats the advantage to connecting to a network share using this guide as opposed to doing this

Finder -> Go -> Network -> "Network Group" -> Connect ?

When I do the above, I am able to choose what folder on my Windows machine to access.

The issue I have though is when my MBP comes out of sleep, I get a message saying I lost connections, do I want to dismount. If I choose yes, Finder hangs for 5 min or so. I read on another site that this is an common problem. Anyone know a fix for this?

I apologize if this has already been answered, but I have looked everywhere and still cannot get my MacBook connected to my PC running XP SP2.

I have the Windows Firewall all the way off and still no luck.

I keep getting the error 36: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in [IP] cannot be read or written."

Please help!

Is your WinXP machine part of a Workgroup? If so, it should show up in OSX. Goto Finder, Network. The Workgroup should be displayed, then you click on Workgroup Name -> Connect. Once its connected, it will ask you what shared folder you want to mount.

The above works for me. I'm still VERY confused what the first post of this thread is all about. It seems like alot to do for the same thing I explained above.

Is there advantages to doing it the way in the first post? Please OP, respond :)

Ah, I had the same problem.

In windows go into the network device (I think) you are using and into its preferences and somewhere in there there will be an install button. Out of frustration I installed everything on the list after clicking that and it worked straight away. I spent pretty much a whole day trying to get this to work so I can't remember if that is exactly the right way to go about it but some protocol or other apparently was missing before.

Hope this helps.

When I go to Networks in Finder, the Workgroup appears, but appears as a folder. An EMPTY folder...

Thats a good start. Next you have to check if your PC has a firewall that may be blocking your Mac from seeing it. This was the case for me, so I set a rule in my firewall for my Macs IP address.

Sorry, but this just confused me even more. Lol.

Mac to PC

Ok I have read through hundreds of different Guide books, THis was the most helpfull. Here is what I'm Trying to do and what works or not.

Pc to Mac
I'm currently running windows Vista, the only way i can browse my mac is to go and Map network dirve, then select log in as different User and that will work, and thats ok.

Mac to PC

Now here lies my problem, I just formatted my Mac. I want to be able to click on Go->Network->MyPC->Connect
Now when i try to connect it says "The Alias "MyPC" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found. and this was working before formatting.
But if i do like in the guide. go->Connect to Server->smb://192.168.x.xxx/sharedfolder

it brings me to the same system authentication as before and i click OK and it Works. It maps my Sharing folder as a Drive on my MAC

NOW. how come it is doing that. I know some will say well it works the other way so use that way. I'm just currious on what could be doing this

Oh and to add more to the dilemma, I have another PC, (PC1 and PC2) PC1 can see PC2 in network but cannot connect to it, same thing VIce versa. But i can Map Network Drive and That WOrks. !!!!!!!!!! Very Very Very Strange.

THanks Alot.

Mac to PC

Ok I THink i have the Solution, for my post above. The thing i have to do is on my Vista PC go to Admin Tools and I have to Give the User(Mac) Admin RIghts FOr it to be able to connect to my PC. Weird Thing though all my shares are for Everyone. and as soon as i remove Admin RIghts, My mac Gives me. The Alias "MYPC" Could not be opened. Because the original item cannot be found. I can COnnect to it with smb:\\..... but not trough Network->My PC.....

THough as soon as I give the user Admin Rights (the user also has to have a Password otherwise it doesnt work) It works Fine. Now Here is the other problem, I have Multiple user Accounts created On My PC and its annoying on restart and other multiple things. THe only way to have one user (Mine) is to put admin rights to the account EVERYONE

This never happened before, something changed, I never needed Admin Rights Before. Does anyone know why this would be happening???

Thanks.
