Networking IP

Ok, for the life of me I can't get networking between my Powerbook and Win2K IBM box. I've tried all the online guides I could find (about 10 thorough ones or so). They are connected by a Netgear router and both have no problem getting on the Internet.

I'm running 10.2.7 and 10.3.2 on the Mac both will not connect. I've made a new user account on the IBM just to see if that'd help, no luck.

In Panther's Finder (Network) the workgroup of the IBM shows up as NET (what I named it from Control Panel) but no shares can be seen. In Jag when I Connect to Server I get -36 error.

Please can someone tell me what else to do, check or try.

One question is the computer has a network of 10.2.7 and the mac is on 10.3.2?

They should both have the same network 10.2.7.

Can you ping the ibm with the mac and can it also be done the other way around?

Could you update the instructions for OS x 10.5?

I just got my first Mac and have networked it with my Windows computers. I am able to see my Windows shared folders from the Mac but I cannot see mac folders from Windows. I cannot find the "Directory Access" utility in my utilities folder.....Thanks.

He means the Mac has Jaguar 10.2.7 and Panther 10.3.2 on it (my question is why in the world aren't you running 10.2.8 and 10.3.9???).

If the Mac can see the PC under "Network" but there are no shares, well are you sure you enabled some shares on the PC?

Updates to info on mac-pc networking?

I've been searching the net and found edesignuk's brillant and informative post from 10-Jan 2004... Just wondering how up to date it is?

I've tried reading forward from then and back from the present and haven't found any changes yet...

Here is my problem...

I have 4 PC laptops (all XP Pro's) and a mac mini (G4-OS X 10.4.11) running off of a Netgear WGT624 wireless router.

The mac mini is wired directly into the router via an Ethernet connection.

I just put a LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB external hard drive on the mac mini via the firewire 400 jack.

I want to setup a cross-platform network and use file sharing to automatically back up my pc's across network to the LaCie.

My brother steered me to Samba [3.0.28] which I downloaded and started reading and reading and reading....

When I figured this wasn't going to be easy, I started looking for something simpler and found Samba X [2.2.2] which says its the packaged answer for someone wanting to do the simple things I want to do... The only problem is that it appears to be fairly dated and not compatible with OS X 10.4!

So, after more reading and searching the net, it appears that I might be able to set up the network with settings already available in XP and OS X 10.4...

Following the instructions from the forum at mac-connect, I hit a roadblock when I cannot get a dialog box on the "accounts" window that states "allow user to log in from Windows".

I was able to set the Sharing preferences to allow "Windows File Sharing", "Personal File Sharing", "Personal Web Sharing" and "Printer Sharing".

edesignuk's instructions appear very thorough and I'm ready to forge ahead... Just wanted to make sure I don't take off half-cocked if there has been some major changes and/or corrections since Jan-04!

By the way... I am not using any log-in's or passwords on any of our machines... I do not broadcast my SSID, I use access control [via mac address]

Thanks,

germannator

Error code - 36

Ive gone through this setup to setup a network between my Mac and Windows XP machine. I can see my Mac in "My Network Places" on the XP machine, but when I attempt to connect to folders on the PC using Connect to server with the PC IP address and folder I want to access, I get an error saying the Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://IP ADDRESS/FOLDER" could not be read or written.

Any help with figuring out this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I am wirelessly connected to the router via my Mac, the PC is hard wired, any potential for that to be a problem?

I just got ahold of my first Apple, an iMac Snow 2 days ago, after being a user of PC's since the first IBM PC 5150, and I can now see what all the hype is about. I don't care if it is slow by todays standards, this G3 600 with 512mb running Tiger 10.4.11 kicks the Celeron 2GHz with a gig of memory butt in 80% of what I am doing so far....fantastic! Plus OS X is just nice to look at, and work in.

I would like to Thank edesignuk for posting this info, I don't care how old the post is! After 5 hours of looking, searching, and trying other tutorials, this was the easiest by far to follow, and by the time I read it and did what it said I had this 'ol Snow reading and writing to a wired home network with 3 Windows XP Pro systems.

Thanks Again edesignuk if your still around, and what a great forum!

well done! :)

your short user name is the name of your home folder and your password is the password you use to login to your Mac.

Eureka!!!!!

Never mind...I got over my brain fart...it works like a dream...Thanks to all...Thanks for this guide...and thanks richthomas for your prompt reply...and thank god I got m network running...YAHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!...I am so happy I could Dance...

I tried last year but nada. That was before I found this tutorial. But, I still can't get it to work. When I type in my windows user name and pw after trying to connect to server, it says that either my name or pass is wrong when they're right because I logged out of XP and logged back in to check.

I'm going to try again tomorrow. Thanks for the tutorial.

Correct IP Address for your Windows Machine

Kat,

I had my cross-platform network on-line then- one day I got the same errors you received... It wasn't the password, what had happened was my Net Gear router reassigned a new IP address to my Windows machine. In turn the Samba server couldn't find the pc at the shared address and generated the incorrect login/password error.

Check the IP address in your mac for the shared folder on your pc. Make sure they are both the same. If that's it and you happen to be using a wireless router with "dynamic" routes, change your Windows machine's IP address to a Static (Fixed) IP address.

Hopefully this is your problem, and if not, maybe someone else will respond!

Good Luck,

Germannator

Its called DHCP and yes a static IP would fix this, but set it at the client not on the router. Unless your setting up DHCP based on MAC addresses.

10.5.2 SMB not fixed

Have patiently waited for 10.5.2 so that I could access Windoze machines on my workgroup - SMB was supposed to be fixed - but it isn't.

When I do Finder - Go - Connect to server and enter the URL, smb://xxx.xxx.x.x/name, I get an error: 'The text entered does not appear to be a recognized URL format. URLs should begin with .... and of course smb:// is in the list.

Anyone have an idea? Thanks for any suggestion

Windows XP to Leopard 10.5.2

Im not an expert in networking. I have never had a problem with a Mac seeing a PC but like others have always had some issue in the reverse direction.

Leopard, as you know, changed certain preference dialogs.

Here is what I did to make it work for me.

On the MAC: System Preferences > Sharing > Check " File Sharing"
Then click on the Options button. Check "Share Files using SMB"
Click Done.
If you never knew the address of the MAC you can see it now where you see the message - Other users can access your computer.......

On the PC: Either in Start > Run or in an Explorer window type \\ folllowed by the address of the MAC

example: \\123.123.1.123

Thats it.

I never touched the Network Preference or entered anything in the WINS field.
Now I have no idea why, and don't really care until it stops working but I was able to access the Mac through the windows Network > Workgroup (not Office) where it was given an arbitrary name:
\\Mac0015f106d843

We need to mount my Mac (Leopard) files from my PC (Windows XP). We had no problems with this for years. Then we upgraded to Leopard and none of us can access our Mac files from our PCs. We waited for 10.5.1 and then 10.5.2 and that didn't fix it. I've done everything you said and no luck. Everything is shared on the Mac side. On the Windows side we try to connect to a Mac and we get a login and password. However, we can never connect. No matter what we type for the login and password field it doesn't take it and just puts the dialog back up. I wish this could be fixed because emailing files back and forth is a real pain.

I had the "
The text entered does not appear to be a recognized URL format - but I have entered correctly SMB://IP address/volume." error as well. After countless hours of investigations, i figured out that the problem was a broken symlink in /System/Library/Filesystems. In fact the symlink tried to point to a ext2.fs module i once installed in order to access my linux formatted harddisk. It seems that the URLMount framework is not robust enough to handle broken filesystem modules and then denies to work at all. I simply needed to delete the broken symlink there and everything was fine again. I hope this helps.

total newb

i recently switched over to mac and im trying to use chicken of the vnc or cord to use my pc (running xp pro) remotely. however my knowledge of computer networking is shamefully incomplete. i have the computers hooked up via ethernet cable, no network hub. both computers realize there is something there but i can't get them to connect. i have gone through several tutorials but vnc's won't connect for me and when i try to connect to them through the "Go" tab in finder i cannot get the right username/password, even though i know what they are and use them on a daily basis on my pc and mac. help?
