Disconnect Shares after waking from sleep

I hope someone has a good solution for this. Whenever my MBP goes to sleep, it loses the network share connections when it wakes up. When it wakes up, I get a message box saying the share connection has been lost and to unmount them.

Is there a way to automatically remount them or stop them from getting disconnected??

hello. i'm running mac osx 10.3.9 and windows xp. i followed the tutorial, got my mac to connect to my pc, but i can't seem to get my mac to show on up on my pc. i've tried searching for it, using start>run, using network connections. nothing seems to work. any suggestions? thanks.

Maybe reading the thread from start to finish would solve any issue, since most problems had already been covered?

i have read the thread from start to finish, and I am unable to connect from my Mac OS X Tiger mac mini to my Windows Vista ultimate machine. However, I am able to do it the other way around from the vista machine to mac; I can browse my entire drive on the mac from the vista machine and even copy files.

The problem that I have is that when I do the Connect to Server and enter (smb://192.168.1.100) which is my vista machines ip address, it doesn't even pop up with the windows asking for authentication of credentials, it just sits there trying to connect and times out. The other way, goign to Network, my ID, Vista, I receive the 'Unable to open alias' or whatever error message that everyone else is running into.

I have even set the usernames and passwords as the same, all short one word phrases too.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

networking os x (intel) with xp home edition

Hello,
I've followed the guide on how to network pc and macs on this site. After finishing I am able to access files on my mac from my PC using the "run" feature on windows. However, I cannot access my pc from my mac.

I've lowered my firewall on my pc. I'm able to get to the log in screen... but I cannot get past that.

Also, I've noticed that in finder window, there is a "network" button right above my Macintosh HD icon. Can I utilize this way to connect to my PC?

Remember I have XP Home which is a pain.

When I type in my xp log in password in my mac when trying to connect to my shared folder, I get the error:
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured
(Error Code -41)"

Thanks,

How important is restarting after you set up sharing on folders?

I have 2 maxtor external HDs and they are password protected. That means that every time I restart my PC system to which they are connected, I have to re-enter their passwords and then I need to reshare them. Is there another way to keep them shared without having to manually do it each time?

I don't mind manually resharing them every time but I was wondering if this was one of the reasons why I get error code -41.

I get error code -41 with any shared folder so I know that this cannot be the only problem.

Thanks,

Given below are common reasons for Status 41 error codes:
1. Network issues
2. Fragmented Drives
3. Corrupt file
4. Third-party software conflict (AntiVirus)
5. Client file system utilizing too many resources
6. If the client is utilizing 3.4.x, VERITAS recommends upgrading to 4.5 Feature Pack 6 (FP6) or later

Steps to try:

* Disable Veritas Snapshot Provider (VSP) on backup
* Disable AntiVirus
* Disable Tracker.exe

The above steps will decrease the amount of file system utilization on the client.

Note: Symantec recommends that customers experiencing the issues mentioned in this document, upgrade to the latest versions of each of the products used to ensure the highest levels of compatibility between them. Please contact your Sales Representative or Reseller to obtain upgrade information for your products. Additionally, you may also contact Symantec Sales directly at http://www.symantec.com/purchase/ and http://www.veritas.com/buy/BuyHome.jhtml

-------------------------------
So I either have
1) a network problem... - yeah, this one makes the most sense
2) an antivirus problem - even though I'm disabling my firewall and my norton antivirus
3) a disk space problem? - only have 10 gigs free on my pc.... or a fragment problem - I can't defrag with less than 15 gigs.

9. If an error 41, network connection timed out, occurs for a restore from an image that contains a large number of files, it may be necessary to increase CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT.

will try this. i wonder if this is the same as the link posted for the error in the first post.

edit: yes, this is the same as the link in the first post. will have to try it.

I would change the command for connecting to a PC from a mac to just the smb and the IP address. when you start adding folders, it can easily give you error -43. However, if you just type in the IP address, you can choose from the shared folders available and it opens them up in finder. Really slick!!!!!

Manually enter the username & password?

I am having the same problem as sventunus - I can connect to a win2003 share via terminal, but not through the Finder. I am not in a domain. When using the Finder I get the Username/Password error - without a chance to manually enter the username and password.

Is there any way to manually enter the username and password? I checked my keychains but didn't see anything there. I can connect to XP boxes no problem, and can connect to this 2003 share from the XP boxes (including the Virtual one on Fusion) without any trouble.

Hi guys,
I have followed each and every recommendation, but still no luck in getting my MacBook Pro to see the shares on my W2K3 R2 SP2 server.
IRPStackSize has been increased, Directory Access has been set correctly and the macbook has been succesfully registered in the AD on the server (I am connecting to a domain).
When i connect using smbclient through the console everything works fine:
macosx-sven-dens:~ desv$ smbclient //10.1.5.11/boulevart -W BGW -U desv
Password:
Domain=[BGW] OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2]
smb: \> quit
But when I try to do the same via Finder -> go to server -> smb://ip/share , am prompted for my login information, enter EXACTLY the same as in the command line, it doesn't work.
I then get a message telling me that "my username or password is incorrect". Crazy...

I have an interesting question that I'm sure some of the brilliant minds here have an answer to.

How can I connect to my Windows XP server from a OSX...but across the Internet? In other words, I want to make video and other media on my server available to my editors who are not on my same network. There HAS to be a way but I just can't seem to find it anywhere!!

Thanks!

The question is how secure does this need to be? Are you ok with the data being posted on a FTP site? Or do you want direct access via finder? Because this changes how you will do this.

One way is to create a VPN. They are pretty easy (and cheap) with VPN Tunnels available in the SOHO equipment. I believe Linksys puts a 'V' in their product name if it is VPN equipped. When you create the VPN tunnel, the networks can be attached as if they were all 'local'.

I would try Hamachi. Its free, secure, and cross platform.

Another more complicated but more powerful option which is also free, is to use m0n0wall. Its pretty easy to set up.

When sharing files between one computer and another in the same room following the steps originally posted, I don't expose myself on either of the computers to others posing a risk do I? Already I don't have a firewall so I'd like to be as secure as possible.

Enabling file sharing does leave you open for attack from hackers, but the risk isn't terribly large if you're on a wired network.

Even if the file sharing was between two computers three feet apart? Well if so, how do I decrease or diminish the risk that it creates? On both my Mac and PC I have viruses, adware, and spyware under control; and I believe the only other thing needing protection is firewall, in order to prevent hackers. I basically just wanna know what to do in order to keep others away from my computer and info, such as IP, etc. Thanks for the other reply btw MJ

It might be better to take this into a separate thread... Basically it all depends on your setup. The distance between machines is kind of irrelevant if we're talking about a wireless network since the router generally broadcasts further than this. I think your question's slightly more complicated than you think, but in short it's probably bets just to enable a firewall at your router, put some decent security settings on your wireless router and then hope for the best. The vulnerability of a computer with file sharing enabled is only relevant if a hacker can get into the network in the first place. I hope this makes a little bit of sense. :)

Yes it makes some sense. :D. So about the firewall, I was tinkering around and came across "enable stealth mode", and "block UDP communications", would you reccomend these? Also, do you know of a way to turn on firewalls without disrupting anything... by that I mean, before, I turned on my router's firewall, but it prevented AOL on my PC from working... so I had to turn it back off. I don't know the difference between that and personal firewalls, the software firewalls I mean... but I haven't turned any of them on yet. So the way to prevent people from gaining access to my computers in any way, shape or form, is just firewalls and router security, correct?

Congrats edesignuk!! One final question...

First we have to salute edesignuk! His easy to follow instructions were a blessing! He has 500 posts and probably drew in another 50 subscibers! (Like me...) in almost 4 years!

I've just puchased a new Imac ( 24 inch screen-- beutiful machine!) but have very limited knowledgr of OS X. (except that it "teaches" you how things work)

Now the question: I can easily connect my iMac to the Windows XP shared folder.

However, when i do the run-->//IP.Address/Me command it doesn't even look like it's trying a connection. All I get back is "Unable to find file or program..." or some such. I've read most of the 500 posts and have tried some of the solutions (firewalls, et al) and nothing seems to be working.

I wonder any advice is worth it today: Leopard's coming out party!

--------------------------------------------------------------

Why did I spend a couple of hours yesterday making this work?? The situation isn't much different with Leopard--but I can't seem to make it work! We learn by fiddling with things; I'll keep at it and hopefully will have a good post how to do this.

Connecting to my Mac from my PC...

Well... I've gone through this whole thread, and there have been a number of people that have the same problem that I currently have - and from what I can tell, none of those people have had their problems solved. (Unless they fixed the problem and did not report back to this thread.)

From my XP sp2 system I select Run and type: \\192.168.1.11\robporetti

This is my Mac mini ip address and my shortname. I get a windows authentication dialog box... I type in:
User name: robporetti
Password: "my password"

The dialog box nearly instantly closes and reopens, displaying:
User name: RP\robporetti
Password: *********

RP is the name of my local PC machine that I'm working from...

My Mac is set to NOT auto-login, so everyday I use those same credentials to work on the Mac - obviously this is not a case of incorrect credentials. I can connect to the PC from the Mac - although the directories are shown as empty. I've temporarilly turned of my PC firewall. (does this happen instantlu or do I have to restart?)

Very frustrating because I have a pretty good IT background and I'm a windows programmer (VB/SQL). I also bought my first Mac when the Mac Plus came out...

I know this thread is probably "old and tired" now, but if anyone has some ideas, I'd be appreciative...

Cheers!

More Information:
When I go to "View Workgroup Computers" I see my Mac... when I double click, I get the authentication dialog box:

Connect to robs-mac.local
Connecting to Robs-mac
User name: robporetti - my shortname
Password: ********** - my password

WIndows gives me an error:
\\Robs-mac is not accesibke. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the adminstrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Multiple connections to a server or a shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again...

well... I'm going to restart both machines and try again, but this always feels like I'm grasping at straws...

Rob

After upgrading to leopard I am unable to network with windows machines anymore. It worked in Tiger and Panther before that and I didnt change any settings since - all worked. Now, in Leopard I cant see windows computer in the browser and I cant see Macs in "show workgroup computers" in windows either...

I have Sharing files and folders using SMB enabled.

Sharing printer doesnt work too with windows anymore.

Can anybody help?
