Nice thread thanks for the info.

Just to add to another interesting problem, I have two PCs connecting to a B/W G3 running OS X 10.3.5 the PCs are running XP Sp2

When the PCs have a file open on the server from word or other applications it will crash the app on the PC when you try to save and say it cant find the server.

There are two problems, 1 is that power save is turned on in the advanced features for the networking card, the pc turns its card off! thats cool on a desctop:) select properties for the connection then advanced for the device and uncheck the power save feature.

second is an network autodisconnect that is default at 15 minutes! the bitch is its in the registry, so you have to find it and hack it, I donloaded instructions on an NT hack for this and it worked fine, I will try and find them and post them here, or just do a google for it.

If you have a problem like this the information manager will give you an error number, looking it up on MS just tels you they know about it! no fix

(no wi fi card). just wondering, what's the best router out there that can share files/internet for a home user? my friends recommend belkin, linksys, netgear and a whole load of other things i never heard of. please help, i've been searching for this for weeks, for a cheap mac compatible wireless router. thanks everyone :)

Congratulations!!! And welcome to the club.
Regarding router - may I suggest AirPort Extreme? I use it and so far everything is OK. I connected PC with the Ethernet cable to the AirPort Extreme (AE), and my PowerBook is connected wirelessly. AE has also NAT, so you are immediately behind the firewall. Now after long long long awaited firmware update AE works like a charm with DSL modem. Highly recommended. You will have freedom to move with your iBook, and solid connection at the same time.

First, thanks so much for making this thread (my life is sooo much easier now). I did every step given and my PC can access my ibook so well. However, when I tried accessing my PC from my ibook, i got error code -36: The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://192...../..." could not be read or written.

Now, I have checked my PC to make sure that the firewall is not on. What else should I do?

thanks

Thanks. I am not much of a computerexpert, but I was able to set up a small network between my ibook and my win 2000 pc thanks to your clear example

Now I know where to find proper help, have been searching the net for a couple of days for a good explanation, without succes till I found this forum

congrats and thanks

Edesign thank you for such a great guide. I have followed it closely and managed to access my Mac from my PC. But the other way round I do everything you state but when it is connecting to smb://192.168.1.3/**** it comes up with an error "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct".

Can you help me out with why this is happening? BTW, this is on a wireless network.

Thanks in advance, and Happy Christmas to all! :)

Intermittent Error -36

I have followed your guide (and many help files & docs) about accessing a share on my PC running Win2Kpro from my eMac running OS 10.2. Your guide is the best, but I have one remaining problem. My eMac connects (via Finder/Go/ConnectServer) to my PC share once in the morning, but if that connection is broken in any way (orderly or accidental), I get Error -36 on all subsequent tries until the next morning. Restarting one or both systems makes no change. The PC audit/logs the successful login, file access, & logoff, but logs nothing about the later connection failures, so I suspect the problem cause is other than PC security/permissions. How do you suggest I proceed to find my problem cause and cure?

Can I just run my brand new PowerMac G5 and my old PC Windows Milleniam

I just hooked up a Linskys BEFSR41 Version 2 Etherfast Cable/DSL Router with built in 4 port 10/100 switch for sharing high speed internet.

It is wired, not wireless.

Can I just plug in my PowerMac with a catagory 6 Ethernet cable to the router and run the two computers as lone enities without the ability to exchange data or use the same perifials.

I hope I can..and can I hope I can add more computers, Apple and PC as lone enities too.

Thanks
Tom

Later on I will link some of these together, I am a brand new switcher.

and proud as punch...but I know almost nothing.

Okay, I was able to connect to my iBook from my PC, but when I try to connec to my PC through "Connect to Server", it keeps giving me a message that it "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct." I have tried connecting to a shared folder, hard drive and user folder with no success. Please help me out. Thanks.

Daniel

Nevermind, I got it working. It turned out that the PC somehow changed its own IP address fro some reason. I was able to network with it and print from it. Thanks for your very helpful tutorial, edesignuk.

You trying to steal my thunder? :D :p lol.

Not at all! :) Just thought I'd offer some additional help; kind of a "team effort," ya know?! ;)

edesignuk, you have given me hope. I changed jobs this week, and I have struggled all day today trying to get my Mac to get on the Windows network. I'll try your steps first thing in the morning. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

No dice. After I try to connect from the "Connect to Server" window on my Mac, I get this message: "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct." I can ping the server successfully. I have set up a user name and password on the Windows network (and rebooted). The "Connect to Server" window on my Mac never asks for a name or password or username. Any ideas?

What OS is your Windows server running? Do your windows boxes authenticate to a domain or are they all just in a workgroup?

The server runs Windows 2000. (The PC work stations run XP.) I believe they authenticate to a domain rather than a workgroup.

So you have an account in the Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain right?

When you "connect to server" from OS X you enter "smb://serverip/share", and when you click connect it doesn't prompt for authentication?

Correct, I have an account. I just set up, with a password, and rebooted the server and the Mac. It doesn't prompt for authentication.

And I just checked a workstation -- I can access my Mac on the Windows XP computer by entering the Mac IP in the Run dialog box.

Hey there.
I am also having an issue where I am not getting prompted for a username or password when I try to connect to a Windows 2003 domain controller via smb.
i.e. smb://server/sharename
All I get is the "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" message.
I do get prompted for a username and password and can successfully connect if I connect via afp.
i.e afp://server/sharename
Would really like to get smb working between the Windows 2003 server and the macs.
Did you have any luck connecting, strother?

I downloaded a trial version of DAVE, and now the Mac can *SEE* two workgroups (or domains) on the network, and it can see several computers on one of those workgroups. Unfortunately, it's the wrong workgroup. The computers in workgroup to which I want to connect are invisible to me for now. Very weird.
