From XP I can easily see my Apple. From the Apple I only see XP's single "mac" folder. I dropped a file in this "mac" folder on the XP and can see it from my Apple. I want to access "My Documents" and other folders on my XP. How do I do this?

You will have to share what folders you want on your PC in the same way you did this "mac" folder. Or, just share our your whol C: drive.

Of course! I was so set on your recommendation of creating "mac" folder on the XP, I didn't think of turning the other shared folders on. I'll try it.

What about sharing printers. With my Compaq it would simply show up as a choice for the printer. When I pull Printer List on Apple, no network is there. Ideas?

Routing issues?

Hey, i found this forum just by luck, so i signed up
but anyways, i have a PC running windows 2000 and an eMac running Panther 10.3.8, all connected to my wireless linksys router (by cables, wireless for random laptops). This router is then in turn connected to my modem, obvsiously then to the internet. The first problem i seem to be having, is that the two computers can "see" each other, but my windows computer tells me that "\\OSX was not found, the network path was not found" and then when i attempt to open the PC from the Go > Network box, Finder stops and i'm stuck behind what my dad calls the "coloured pinwheel of doom", and i have to restart finder because it just becomes non-responsive. This is really bugging me, because i need to do several backups to DVD and the eMac is the only one with a SuperDrive! . Hope someone can help me out!

Another small prob i seem to be having, is playing games over the network/on the internet. The eMac connects with the game (Battlefield 1942) fine, and we play online all the time. Recently i acquired battlefield for PC, and it refuses to connect over the Internet, nor will it access the Local network (this was back when the network was accessible, why it stopped working i have no idea). I've tried to forward the ports on the Router (Linksys WRT54G), even on the Modem (Netcomm NB1300 +4), but it does nothing. Trend Micro firewall is off, as is any trace of windows port blocking, but it does nothing! this is become quite annoying, so i'm hoping that someone can give me a pointer in the correct direction!

On your Windows machine, go into the Printers folder, then share the printer(s) like you normally would (the method varies, depending on which version of Windows you have).

One way that's generally common to all Windows versions:
Right-click the printer, choose Properties, click the Sharing tab, set the sharing settings. Repeat for other printers you want shared.

I have not had any success using a wireless router as a hub to connect computers. As you have discovered, the router might not let non-Web traffic through (to be technical, non-TCP/IP traffic), including SMB (Windows-to-Windows sharing, Windows-to-Mac/Mac-to-Windows sharing) and whatever protocol Battlefield 1942 uses. I connect all the computers to a hub, which is connected to a router, which is connected to the modem and the Internet. Computers connecting wirelessly connect to a wireless access point connected to the previously mentioned hub. I have had no problems with internal network traffic using this approach; I have not tested internet gaming (such as Battlefield 1942).

I just thought I'd share my setup - I'm not sure if I can help with your specific problems.

Did you try making a direct connection between the two computers (i.e. with an ethernet cable directly between the two?). It might be, as the poster above notes, that your router won't act as a hub. For an immediate solution and to be able to burn those DVDs try a direct connection. Long term, a hub might be your answer.

I've shared the printer on my XP machine, I don't know how to find it on my Apple.

Got it to work, thanks. For newbs, use the help feature on your Apple, it walks you through it. Believe me, if I can do it a 5 year old can do it.

Works Great, But Question...

...are the aliases to computers that show up in the Finder's Network folder refreshable? I can connect to my various PCs at home and at work without trouble using the Connect To Server method, but I'd always had problems browsing the network using the Finder under Jaguar and Panther. When I installed Tiger last week I was presently pleased to that network browsing was much better and that I could navigate to my desire PC, view a list of the available shares, and logon to the selected share. Great. The problem is now is that the aliases now seem to be out-of-date and I get the message that "The alias <alias name> could not be opened because the original item could not be found" followed be a really "useful" opportunity to search for the original item on my local disk. I can only assume that the Network aliases are now out-of-date (I guess the Mac should be resolving computer names via DNS so that the IP address should be irrelevant) and that they need to be refreshed somehow so that they point to the correct IP addresses.

As noted earlier in the post, I can connect so this isn't really a problem (hell, the Connect to Server method is faster) but it has been bugging me. Any ideas?

External Drive Problem

I followed the instructions, and I can access my Mac from my PC just fine. Unfortunately, I have an external disk drive attached to my Mac for storage, and my PC doesn't see the external drive. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help edesign, but i couldn't get your method to work. I found this different method for transferring files from your PC to Mac, and it worked the first time!

http://images.apple.com/business/mac_pc/pdf/cable_guide_10.3_UK.pdf

Follow these simple steps for both setting up sharing files on your PC and for connecting your mac to your PC. It worked the first time for me! I used a Crossover cable from radio shack for ten bucks.I transferred over 1000 songs in something like nine minutes. several hundered photos too. Thanks everyone for all of the help!

Thanks edesignuk!

Great thread/guide! edesignuk. Thanks to your guide and in particularly the Windows Server 2003 comments I was now able to get my Mac's to connect to are recently installed Windows 2003 server. I kept on getting the "the user name or password was incorrect" message until I read this tread and tried your setting for Windows 2003 server. Now it works great!

Thank you!

Allow me to share my own stupidity in the hope it might help others when all else fails :)

I followed all instructions here -- and it was all set up right. Computers could ping. XP box happily looked at the Mini and could access the data. But no matter what I did... I couldn't get a login prompt. I just kept getting an error -36, could not read or write.

Finally, I figured it out: File and Print sharing was disabled on my network connection on the XP box. (Right-click on the network connection in the task bar, view the status. Select properties to see what services are installed.)

It's always the little things.... Everything else was set up properly, and I'd even done the home network setup wizard on it. I just got too hung up on the differences between OS X and XP, and my being a complete OS X newbie.

I figured it out. I now have full access to everything on my mac, including the external drive. :D So, I guess just disregard my question. Not that anyone was in a hurry to respond...

Ok, I can understand most of what you have put in, but my query slightly changes direction.
I have a Linux Suse Pro 9 box, as a filesharing server and we have an Aramiska Arc as our Internet Router, with an IP address as 192.168.1.1
I have managed to get the MAC to see the router and get on the internet, but I cannot seem to MAP it simply to a drive on the Linux box.
I have WIN XP SP2 mapped to as an R drive (on the Linux box) to \\192.168.1.50\PUBLIC we then enter a username and password.

How do I map my MAC OS X box to this.

Win password

As I said in the guide (;)), your windows account MUST have a password, or how is it supposed to authenticate - it can't.

This is going to seem a very dumb question (sorry), but I too have the same problem - and I've forgotten how to have/enable a password for my windows account!

Thanks for a great guide and patiently wading through everyone's comments and questions.

Ok, Sorry, it was easy... on the PC go to control panels>accounts>change an account and then change or enable a password.

Ethernet and wireless?

Hi, in the excellent guide it states:
"Information you will need to know

• The IP Address of your PC (Start > Run > CMD {return} > “ipconfig” {return})
• The IP Address of your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Terminal {Run app} > for ethernet connection “ipconfig getifaddr en0” {return} or for wireless "ipconfig getifaddr en1" {return})".
Does this mean that I can't network my Mac with my 2PCs (one is linked to the Mac by ethernet, one yet to be linked by wireless), at the same time?

Thanks

Richard

Not at all, it'll work just fine. The command to get your IP is just slightly different. That's all.

I can see my XP shared network printer from my G5 running Tiger.
But when I try to print, in print queue box its saying "Connection failed with error. NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" Then after a few minutes, "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will try in 60 seconds...ERROR: Connection failed with error"
Can sombody please Help Me...

After a couple tries and resets, now it's giving me this messege: "Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_NO_MEMORY"
